1 out of 5 eggsSupport pending

Pros: Good feature-set
Still (mostly) functioning after 1yr.
Server is accessible thru remote access.

Cons: Lost video - tried several monitors, and reboots.
No display at any time - not even during P.O.S.T.
New warranty policy is not reflective of a QUALITY product or organization.
1yr on parts, and 3yr on labor.
However, 'Labor' seems to only include phone and email support., according to their warranty statement.

Other Thoughts: Server is still accessible (via remote access)

This will be our 1st experience (this decade) with SuperMicro support. (used them years ago, they had good product and service)

***I am giving them 1-egg for now because I have yet to see how they will take care of this problem.
I will update this rating based upon the service I get from SuperMicro.

4 out of 5 eggsGood motherboard

Pros: Good motherboard. If you are going with a dedicated ESXi server, this board is excellent. No need of monitor or keyboard to see what happens on the screen. Use IPMI port and be happy reseting you server from Web console. Even installing a vSphere on it remotely is a pleasure. No need to make USB stick or buy CD-ROM device. Everything can be done using web console =)

Cons: Very expensive server memory. Limited at 32GB memory. I would like more if I'm spending money on this motherboard

Other Thoughts: Don't waste your money if you want a fully vSphere compatible motherboard. This one is excellent, but if you have some extra money go with a Supermicro X9SCM-F-O. That's a good motherboard and has Pass-Through support. Same limit of 32GB memory but you can get everything from vSphere 5 functionalities.

Some mathematics:
X8SIL-F-O + Intel X3440 CPU = 475$ vs. X9SCM-F-O + Intel E3-1230 CPU = 447$

So... don't waste you money on this motherboard without Pass-Through support and go with a X9SCM-F-O

4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: This motherboard works, it is decently priced and does its job.

Fits alot of ram, UDIMM and RDIMM supported.
(Note you can only fit 16gb UDIMM and 32gb RDIMM!)

Onboard graphics, this is useful so you can install your operating system and set your server up without worrying about purchasing a graphics card. Extremely good feature making it easier to setup.

Cons: There is resistors RIGHT AROUND the cpu socket. I bought a after market heatsink/fan and it wont sit because of the huge resistors blocking its way. Make sure you pay more attention to what you are purchasing so this doesn't happen to you.

Other Thoughts: This is a dual channel board, you put in either 1 stick, 2 sticks or 4 sticks.

Pay attention to what it supports.
It only takes these two types of ram.
ECC UDIMM 16GB MAX (4 x 4gb)
ECC RDIMM 32GB MAX (4 x 8gb)

Also note this is a dual channel motherboard, so pay attention to what you get.

If you don't know the difference between UDIMM and RDIMM search it up as this is important considering how much ram you are wanting to use.

5 out of 5 eggsSimply Amazing Motherboard and I'll tell you why...

Pros: IPMI is great, including alerts and notifications, web service and SMASH support.
BIOS worked out of the box with Xeon X3440.
Works flawlessly with VMWare ESXi5, including recognizing onboard storage, both onboard NICs and an ARECA 1222 RAID card.
The motherboard has a builtin USB port which is neat.
microATX
Dual GB NICs!

Cons: None. Zero.

Not really a con, but in a mid-tower, I felt that the two different PSUs I tried had cables that were two short. I don't know if this mobo has a weird location for a PSU connector, but this might only be my experience or just a poor choice of PSU on my part.

Other Thoughts: I was getting IPMI email alerts about CPU temperatures. This was fixed after I upgraded the IPMI firmware from 2.50 to 2.60 via web interface. I got the new firmware from SuperMicro IPMI FTP site. They have a manual describing everything you can do with this onboard IPMI (Nuvuo/BMC) controller.

Be sure to download the motherboard and IPMI manuals and keep them. I always learn about new features with this motherboard.

I bought a brand new just-released PSU for this mobo and it happened to be ATX v2.2. The mobo would not boot. It turns out the X3440 (and most modern processors) need ATX v2.3 PSU. After switching to that, the mobo booted up right away.

My Setup:
SuperMicro X8SIL-F
Kingston ECC DDR3 1333Mhz RAM (4x8GB) CL9
Intel Xeon 3440
ESXi5 booting off of a USB drive.
ARECA-1222 RAID card with BBU and 8x2TB Samsung HD204UI drives in RAID10.
Crucial C300 2x60GB SSDs for cache.

I'm using napp-it's all-in-one ESXi solution and everything has gone so smoothly.

4 out of 5 eggsNice piece of material

Pros: When I bought this hardware I was really on the rush to build a new server for a customer. My goal was to have it quickly and for chip.
With this motherboard, I was really surprise. It really provide nice server feature like IPMI.

Cons: It come only with 4 memory slot.

Other Thoughts: This is definitely a brand I will buy again in the future.

2 out of 5 eggsok board, but IPMI is buggy

Pros: Nice features, nice size. Supermicro's support tries hard to help you.

Cons: IPMI health monitoring does not work. It intermittently reports missing fans or overheating (even though the fans and temps are just fine). It makes an annoying beeping sound when this happens, so I've had to disable the buzzer. I've now gone through two boards (original and RMA) and they both do this. Perhaps it's a quirk of the OS I'm running (OpenBSD 4.8) but my understanding is that IPMI features are supposed to be independent of the underlying OS.

Other Thoughts: If it wasn't for the IPMI issues, this board would be alright. Yet that was one of the main selling points for me when I chose this board. I give Supermicro's support team credit for doing their best to help, but in the end I think they just have a buggy product.. I hope they fix it soon.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat entry level server board

Pros: This is really great board for an entry level server. I have it installed with Intel Xeon X3430 and Kingston KVR1333D3E9SK2/8G. This is great combination. System consumes very little power on idle. Also, IPMI on this board is incredible.

Cons: None

5 out of 5 eggsmore pci-e slots

Pros: Great little board. Meets all expectations. I bought this from a friend and not newegg. Now if SuperMicro would build an ATX version with more pci-e 2.0 slots (about 4) at x8 that would be perfection for my intended storage server build.

Cons: None for what it's meant for.

Other Thoughts: Now if Super micro could make a version that's atx with about 4 pci-e 2.0 x8 slots I'd have the ability to build a kick *** storage server....

4 out of 5 eggsTook a while but GREAT MOBO

Pros: Pros - IPMI (KVM over IP) is fantastic! It really is great to install and view everything at this level. My plan for this server build with a Xeon 3440 cpu and 8GB of ram (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820139040) is to install Hyper-V™ Server 2008 R2 core and run WHS, along with linux and win7. I'm hoping this board will be able to handle it.

Cons: I went through 2 of these boards where only the Slot 1 channel 1 and 2 would recognize any memory. Slot 2 channel 1 & 2 would not. I had 4 x2GB sticks in each slot but only the top 2 slots would recognize. I tried every configuration and yes I did read the manual and confirmed the RAM was the right type. Finally after receiving my second board that did the same thing I called SuperMicro and the tech asked if I had the board installed inside the chassis. He suggested I try removing it and test and sure enough the board recognized all 8GB of RAM. He said there could be some solder that was making contact with the chassis and causing a short. Well I finally got it mounted and now it boots fine.

Other Thoughts: From everything I read I really thought I had the wrong memory but I can confirm that the following memory works great and is much cheaper than some of the other suggestions. I purchased 2 x KVR1333D3E9SK2/4G, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820139040 (they work just fine so as long as the board is not making any contact with your chassis. This board rocks and I cannot say now nice it is to be able to KVM inside the box and even mount virtual storage devices (.iso files) and install software remotely. And monitoring the server, rebooting, etc. is really nice.

5 out of 5 eggsNice board

Pros: I bought this board after reading a lot of reviews, and I am glad I did. Out of the box, I had everything together and posting within 20min. Very uneventful.
Came with TONS of sata cables!

Cons: Why did you send me a floppy cable?!?!

Other Thoughts: I am using this at home. Here's my setup:
SUPERMICRO MBD-X8SIL-F-O
KVR1333D3E9S/4G qty 2
Xeon X3440

Unit runs 24/7 with most of the ram used and runs rock-solid. It's almost heart touching, but since it isn't an asus(thank the man upstairs) it doesn't tough my heart!
