4 out of 5 eggsGood Board

Pros: Very solidly built and straightforward. Excellent tech support.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: The ethernet port1 lost a pin, rendering it inoperable, but I cannot blame the overall quality of the board.

4 out of 5 eggsNice part so far, one thing..

Pros: Good support for RAM, chips, decent performance so far.

Cons: The main problem with this board is that you need a y-branch for the power supply to use the dual cpus. You need: "Athena Power 6" EPS-12V 8-pin Y-splitter Power Cable Model CABLE-YEPS828". Had I not seen this in other reviews I would have been unable to use the item. I used the heat sink "Dynatron G666 60mm Double Ball Bearing CPU Cooler" with two xeons.

2 out of 5 eggsRAM Issues

Pros: One of the few boards that support 5600 out of the box and is TURE E-ATX, most are X-ATX even though they say E-ATX...

Cons: Every time this boots i get 3 short beeps which means base 64k ram failure, I have 6 chips of ram and have tried each chip solo in each spot and i always get the same post error, This board has all kinds of ram issues and its posted elsewhere on the net, suggest if you dont have 5600 cpu's to get the asus board and update the bios to allow the new 5600 chips...

5 out of 5 eggsGreat board, Great service

Pros: Lots of room for RAM expansion, has all the server-class options expected such as IPMT, and good documentation.
Great manufacturer support!

Cons: Just be aware that the heatsink mounting points are threaded. I made the same mistake as the reviewer below and got a unit with the plastic stand-offs. Get the right kind up front and save yourself the trouble.

Other Thoughts: I am using 3TB HDDs in a RAID array. The BIOS version shipped with the board was current but didn't support large disks in RAID. I called customer support and they sent me the latest BIOS version, (still in verification testing at the time), and it worked perfectly. 5 eggs for SuperMicro.

5 out of 5 eggsVMware White Box

Pros: This motherboard supports lots of memory allowing for lots of VMs and ability to expand later for even more VMs.

Cons: Motherboard is designed for top mounted power supplies, but I prefer bottom mounted which requires the cable to run across the top of the board. Some PSUs could potentially have cables that are not long enough to do so.

Other Thoughts: I documented all my parts for a working VMware ESXi 4.1 setup at surrealinfo . com under VMware White Box.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat solution

Pros: When used with a Super Micro case, this is a great virtualization solution with a solid BIOS and management features.

Working nicely with Adaptec 5805 - so I get the disk I/O I need.

IPMI with iKVM is sweet - unlike the Tyan S7012, this has a dedicated 10/100 for management, leaving 4 gbE untouched for workloads.

Cons: Two EPS connectors - not really unusual for this type of board - but can be somewhat annoying since the case that Super Micro recommends for this board has a power supply that doesn't have 2xEPS connectors necessary. You'll need a bigger power supply or an EPS splitter if you want both CPUs and more RAM.

Be careful with the heatsink. I had no problems with Supermicro SNK-P0038P 2U Passive Heatsink in the Super Micro case with the air shroud.

Other Thoughts: I paired with Corsair 3x4GB DDR3 ECC CMS4GX3M1A1066C71100094361, Adaptec 5805 with WD RE3s and an Intel Xeon E5520. No issues at all.

Consider this board with the Super Micro CSE-743T-645B case, or another Super Micro case. If you don't, you may find things not fitting correctly.

Loaded 2008R2 with Hyper-V and I have lots of VMs humming along happily now!

5 out of 5 eggsESXi Implementation

Pros: This server motherboard was purchased for the purpose of running Virtual Machines, lots of them.

Well this mobo does ESXi Version 4.0.0 Build 171294 out of box. No hesitation running 6x4GB DDR3 sticks of Registered Kington Memory in Triple Channel configuration.

A pair Intel 5520 make this machine have 16 logical threads, 8 core physically.

Nice to have the USB ports built onto the board. This reduces the chance that someone unplugs it from the external side. (locked doors can reduce a high percentage of this too)

4 Intel GbE NICs onboard

Remember 2x8pin CPU power connectors are on the motherboard.

Fan options inside the BIOS to regulate various amounts of 747s going off.

Cons: No cons to this motherboard.

Other Thoughts: Make sure you purchase properly shaped heatsinks. I looked at the board and thought any 1366 LGA heatsink will drop in. Purchase two Scythe Shurikens for the job (low profile fan and copper heatsink for 3U rackmount case). The mounting bracket on the motherboard isn't like regular 1366 i7 implementations. They have threads going through the 4 holes unlike the empty holes found in other setups. Also called "winged" 1366 brackets.

Removing the bottom bracket isn't an option. Scythe doesn't seem to sell optional brackets for LGA 1366 "non-winged".

The other bigger issue was the mounting clips of the heatsink dug into the voltage regulators around the socket in the Scythe setup.

Ended up using default Intel 60mm tornadoes instead for heatsink/fan setup.

Suggestion: Tax exemption options from Newegg Canada should be offered. How long has Newegg been selling to Canadians?

The shipping was great even when the shipment originated from California.
