5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Great, reliable server board. Paired with an X3430 and 24GB RAM it's robust and perfect for heavy duty file servers, FreeNAS machines, or other roles. IPMI is fantastic. Obviously works in any enclosure, but installed in a Supermicro chassis it's a great setup.

Cons: On our first one I had a heck of a time figuring out what memory it wanted. Once I found a 24GB set it liked I stuck with that.

Other Thoughts: By this point it's missing some newer things, but that's not always what's needed from a server. Each one we have has been extremely reliable.

1 out of 5 eggsDOA

Pros: Not much of a pro with this order

Cons: The board came DOA and Newegg says it was damaged when returned. Duh!! It was damaged when I recieved it. Bottom line is they are not going to replace the board. I have ordered from NewEgg for years and never had an issue but this is not good.

4 out of 5 eggsGood motherboard but you need to know some quirks

Pros: Nice solid and reliable design. 6 memory slots, dual gigabit LAN, IPMI. I've been using X8 motherboard line for over a year and have 5 servers running these boards. They run quite reliably. Technical support is nice and responsive. Managing these servers via IPMI is a breeze: You can just plug a network cable in the port and power your server on and off via browser even when the server is off or crashed. You can also remotely connect to display, keyboard and mouse via java applet. Since it works via motherboard you can use it to change BIOS settings before the OS boots and troubleshoot OS boot issues.

It fits nicely into SUPERMICRO rackmount cases which are also quite nice.

Cons: There is one quirk that you should now. The default value for "Active State Power Management" is "Disabled". DON'T ENABLE IT. If you do you are very likely to have severe problems with network cards. It took me a very long while to figure it out and I nearly went crazy in the process

5 out of 5 eggsNOT compatible with Core i5

Pros: IPMI is AMAZING, how did I ever live without it? Lots of expansion flexibility, plenty of onboard SATA, plenty of DIMM slots, dual GB LAN.

Cons: Does NOT support Core i5 Dual-Core CPU's as Newegg states. Causes error message to post interrupting boot, disabling error messages will allow boot to proceed uninterrupted however VT-d will not work properly. No SATA 6.0, no USB 3.0, but this being a server-board I wasn't looking for bleeding edge consumer-board tech.

Other Thoughts: Great MB, good value for the money, rock solid Supermicro quality, IPMI!!, plenty of flexibility with CPU support and expansion slots. Great ESXi MB. Very happy with this mb.
