2 out of 5 eggsX9SRA

Pros: You can build a Xeon based workstation that can support up to 256 Gb RAM.

Cons: Came with old firmware which doesn't support Intel Xeon E5-2640 v2 CPU or video cards installed in computer. You need to get a X9SRA with bios version 3. Newegg inventory / stock of Supermicro X9SRA is old. I have built literally hundreds of computers for the University over the last 20 years so I am an experienced builder. I have never seen a motherboard that promises so much, but comes with an outdated bios that does support what is advertised.

Other Thoughts: I am very disappointed with this motherboard that I received from Newegg. It did not come with the latest bios to support the latest ivy bridge CPUs. The specs say it supports the Intel Xeon E5-2640 v2 Ivy Bridge-EP 2.0GHz, but unless you get bios version 3 you can't even see the POST video or even upgrade the bios unless you have an old Xeon CPU lying around. Newegg, you should make sure that the motherboards you sell has the latest bios.

2 out of 5 eggsweird motherboard

Pros: usb 3, cheepish

Cons: heatsink form is not normal, no vga or dvi output. this is a strange design probably more for desktops/workstations than servers

Other Thoughts: I would get one of the other boards if you want an easier time finding good fitting components (especially for a 1u setup the IO shield doesn't fix even a supermicro chasis)

2 out of 5 eggsDon't forget the Basics, Supermicro!

Pros: Works perfectly as far as I know once configured

Cons: Supermicro board came with firmware version 1.1 on it. Had to put a generation 1 Xeon on it for it to give video then flash to version 3 so it could work with my i7 4930K. This was after hours of troubleshooting video issues, changing memory and other hardware out...

Is it 2013?? Do I really have to flash my BIOS to get video, Supermicro? If I bought from a local store I'd return this board in a hot second on principle.

No motherboard manual... possible diagnostic hints or beep codes to look up...

No DVD with drivers...

What a total joke

Other Thoughts: Doesn't include a driver disc. I had to get on another PC and transfer drivers via flash drive. Again, what is it, 2013?? I have no idea what those clowns are doing.

5 out of 5 eggsbest of both worlds

Pros: Great mb with Total of 10 sata connectors to build a decent nas solution whether it's all in one zfs with esx or the new Microsoft windows 2012 automated storage tiering. Took me less than 2 hour to put everything together and all rdimm slots works. If you go with ms, you can play games as the mb has 2 pcie x16. It allows perfect consolidation for home lab. Idle power is very impressive as well. I get lower than 58 watts for 10 sata drives (while spinning) with a nvidia geforce 650 ti boost. Haswell may be Better but you are limited to 32gb. This mb can scale lot higher in memory up to 256gb. We all know cpu isn't the bottleneck these days. It's memory and storage esp if testing lots of vms. You also get the nice ecc for copying data do storage.

Cons: Would be nice if supermicro has a better bios similar to asus. My favorite bios is the asus efi.

Other Thoughts: I like to see 10 sata 6 across the board and perhaps a micro atx mb with same features of this mb.

3 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Great feature set.

One of the few server LGA2011 boards out there.

Cons: After about two months, half the RAM slots failed. Does not error, but does not use RAM installed in them.

Onboard "RAID" is software based.

No onboard graphics.

Other Thoughts: Looks like RAM slot failure is common for LGA2011 server boards.

1 out of 5 eggsBad DIMM

Pros: Decent when working, works well with good DIMM slots. Works well with the i7 Extreme Processor.

Cons: Several DIMM slots did not work. After I RMA'd, I received a new motherboard with the same issues. The bad DIMM slots are even in the same place, which makes me think it wasn't even tested, just rubberbanded.

I'm kind of surprised, usually Supermicro is a good place to get server grade motherboards. Not sure if I will RMA again, I'll just refund this for a Sabertooth workstation.

1 out of 5 eggsUnexpected from SM

Pros: Well i haven't found one yet, except the SM brand.

Cons: Received board after 3 hours i opened to fire it up, connected every thing no post.

Played trial and error and elimination game, remove this and remove that all combinations, no post.

Confirmed as DOA and returned, newegg successfully processed it .

real Cons
1. You need Super micro heatsink.
2. Different mounts, you can live with but why ?

3 out of 5 eggsGet what you pay for

Pros: Fast boot, multiple sata inputs on board. onboard audio which i need,

Cons: 2 dimms caused non post, only accepting remaining 6 slots, no onboard video. Non-traditional heatsink mount (should be made more clear by Newegg IMO).

Other Thoughts: I bought this from Newegg as open box unit, and wondering if the Dimm slot problem I encountered was the issue why it was returned. I was careful with the board mount as I saw that as an issue with nontraditional ATX mounting holes. Still I have 8gb kingston unbuffered memory (6 sticks=48gb) which is plenty for my needs, and I'll keep the board. This is my first experience with an Intel build, and I was confused about and had to return a lga 2011 CPUs because I was unfamiliar with their nomenclature. Very confusing, but the xeon chip I bought, although expensive, is blisteringly fast, and probably more than I'll ever need in terms of processing power. This machine will run 24/7 and back up several home machines as well as distribute audio and video.

4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Works out of the box. The BIOS is a bit sparse.

Had an issue with it only detecting 16/48 gb of ram, but I read the other reviews and found a MB support poking the first bank of RAM. I took that out and it detected it all.

Cons: None so far
