5 out of 5 eggsGood Grief people, give me a break. 1 egg reviews because of case issues? Really?

Pros: See other

Cons: See other

Other Thoughts: I can't believe the people are posting reviews about fitment issues of a SERVER motherboard into a DESKTOP case, and then giving low egg ratings. I mean, really, come on now. If you don't know what you are doing, then just don't do it, and don't knock a product for it not working in a way it wasn't designed for because YOU didn't do YOUR research. You want to use a server board with ZERO issues? GO BUY A SERVER CASE!

That won't work for you? Then Don't Buy It. If you like the features of this board, and really, really, REALLY want it, then go to their site, as they are very informative in helping you pick a case that will work with it, and even give you the part numbers so you can order it at the same time. How simple is that?

Next time, do your research, own up to your own screw-ups and make better choices if you are thinking of using something in a way that is isn't designed to do. Sheesh. And the latest 1 egg review, once he finally got the thing installed and the drivers downloaded, had the system up and running and was quite happy with it. So, it is doing what you want, you are happy with that fact, and you give a 1 egg review. Come on.

That's why I take the time to actually read the review on items I'm interested in, even if they have lower egg ratings, because of reviews like these, made by people with either low experience levels, or who apparently just shouldn't be building computers.

Even though I haven't bought it yet, I am going to give it a 5 egg rating just to somewhat offset these knuckleheads.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks great

Pros: This board is great. I have it running Windows 2012 R2 with dual E5-2620 CPUs, 128 GB of RAM, an LSI MegaRAID 9261-8i, two dual port server NICs, and several hard drives and have had no issues.

Cons: As some reviewers noted earlier, make sure you get the narrow LGA 2011 cooler (SNK-P0050AP4, available on Newegg) as I am not sure standard LGA 2011 coolers would work. Also, the board is very large and won't fit in most cases. I have mine mounted in a Xigmatek Elysium and it worked pretty well, with only a couple of holes not lining up. For those, you can get the plastic or nylon standoffs which fit into the motherboard screw holes and lay flat against the bottom of the case.

1 out of 5 eggsDisappointing on Many Levels

Pros: Does what it says it will do.

Cons: for $500 it doesn't stretch the bounds of reason to include a driver DVD. IT should also be noted that if you want to fully support the motherboard in an ATX, E-ATX, or SSi-EEB case, then you will have to drill and tap holes where they go. The form factor on this item is inaccurate at Newegg. I bought two different cases, one Coolermaster HAF-X and an SSi-EEB compatible Phanteks. The supermicro website calls this an E-ATX, it also says it is an E-ATX motherboard on the back of the box, however it is an "Enhanced Extended ATX" form factor and regular cases will not work without modification. A few parts at your local hardware store and some time and you can get any E-ATX case to work, but it is a shame there is virtually no documentation and no included drivers with this board.

Win-7 does not recognize the Gigabit network adapter, so you will have to download the driver ISO off of the supermicro website and then burn it to a DVD to get the drivers onto your machine.

I will say, I plugged everything into the board, powered up, and Windows 7 installed without a single hiccup. However, for double the price of an ASUS motherboard, it ought to come with drivers and documentation included, in my opinion.

1 out of 5 eggsForm Factor is CUSTOM - Do NOT BUY!!!

Pros: I'm sure it would work nice, but I am going to have to buy a tap and die set and custom drill holes to accept the motherboard.

Cons: GIANT pain and frankly unacceptable. Neither SSI-EEB nor EATX cases (I tried one from Coolermaster and one from Phanteks and neither work.

Other Thoughts: This is Horse Manure. I called Supermicro and their technical support department told me their motherboards are all exactly the correct form factor. Complete baloney. Several holes on TWO $300 cases are off by inches.

2 out of 5 eggsNo boot on setup

Pros: All parts in box.

Cons: Would not boot with 2 E5-2600 CPUs, Noctua heatsinks, and 64GBs REG ECC RAM. Talked to Supermicro and went through troubleshooting. Bent CPU pins found. Send back to newegg and they gave refund with 25%fee.

Other Thoughts: No really good choice for server motherboards out there. It's either Asus or Supermicro. I guess pick the lesser of two evils in your opinion.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome server motherboard

Pros: Really glad I sprung for the more expensive one. This motherboard is phenomenal. IMPI on a dedicated LAN interface is such a luxury I'm not used to.

FYI - this motherboard successfully recognized and uses Intel Xeon E5-4607 processors - the 4600 line is supposed to be pretty much identical to the 2600 line but I was sweating worried that it wouldn't work. It works perfectly.

This motherboard has everything + the kitchen sink available on it.

Cons: The onboard RAID and 2x onboard SAS ports are not recognized properly by VMWare ESXi 5.5.

Figuring out where to put the HDD LED, PWR LED, POWER SWITCH etc. jumpers from my case was quite a challenge. The included "motherboard diagram" that comes in the box doesn't identify it. You have to download the manual from Supermicro's website.

Other Thoughts: Be aware the motherboard has Narrow-ILM backplate for the CPU.

You MUST GET A COMPATIBLE SUPERMICRO CPU HEAT SINK. Most of the ones on Newegg use the Square-ILM form factor which will not fit.

The SUPERMICRO SNK-P0050AP4 Heatsink is compatible with this motherboard and works admirably. It's suitable for a 4U case.

4 out of 5 eggsGood, but need to read the manual!

Pros: One of the cheapest mobos that has so much ram, dual cpus, and pic-e 16 slots.

Cons: You really need to read the manual before buying parts. Not just the website description manual. In particular, you need to know that the mounting brackets for the CPU coolers are narrow ILM form. Most brackets are square ILM. Make sure to purchase the correct coolers. Also, the manual states that power supply requires 24-pin and two 8-pin power connectors. very few power supplies for towers are equipped with that kind of connectors, so be sure to purchase one accordingly. Also, not that if you use two CPUs, you will need a minimum of 4 sticks of RAM, at least two per cpu. Also, the EATX is not standard for this board. Your tower may not properly accomodate this. Look in the manual for measurements of mounting holes.

Other Thoughts: It is a good mobo, but you just need to buy the appropriate equipment to support it.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks Great

Pros: Everything. The Kingston memory I used worked fine. You will need to update the bios to install the OS using onboard raid. And yes, narrow type heatsink.

Cons: The only problem I had was the power LED connection is not right. I had to modify the connector on the supermicro case in order to get it to work.

Other Thoughts: I am using this rig in a colo data center with Hyper V 2012. It runs several cloud based server environments for my subscribers.

5 out of 5 eggsGood

Pros: Two CPU, everything seems to work. Worked well with Kingston KVR16R11D8K4/16I.

Cons: GigE ports not supported out of box on Win 7 install. BIOS seems archaic.

Other Thoughts: Needs narrow style LGA 2011 cooler, not square. No on-board sound. No IDE. No PS/2 connection.

2 out of 5 eggsa few things to consider before you buy

Pros: pretty okay when you get it to work. (I can't say much because I just got it to work, and I can probably tell more about it after a few more months.) These comments are from assembling difficulties and problems while trying to get it to work, but supermicro offered good customer service and tech support. They helped me all the way from start to finish. Many times, I felt the urge to take it outside and take care of it Office Space style, but the price tag of $469.99 stopped me from doing so.

Cons: - expensive.
- pretty difficult to get to work
- LGA 2011 narrow type only. Be aware that the choices you have when choosing heatsink will be extremely low (there's about 6-7 types to choose from in newegg). I'm using SUPERMICRO SNK-P0050AP4 for heatsinks. I think my original choice of cooler master can get a more quiet computer, but this will do. they are still not bad.
- USB only keyboard.
- no onboard audio.
- updating driver for motherboard needs to be done, make sure you download and install the right ones. (the files' names from supermicro was a little bit confusing to me (a few drivers are called the same "" which led me to believe that they are the same thing (but they aren't!!))
- you should choose whatever memories they certified! (I tried kingston at first, which fits perfectly, but didn't work. They told me to use ones they certified in their website, I chose samsung, and they work nicely.)

To NEWEGG: I really wish you add LGA 2011 narrow as part of the specification on this board, because I bought a square one and wasting about a week or two extra (and restocking fees) while waiting for parts.

Other Thoughts: if you want a more quiet workstation or server, you may want to get other board that offer more options to choose from when choosing heatsink. BEWARE OF LGA 2011 NARROW!!
