5 out of 5 eggsSo far, very good, but my knees are still shaking...

Pros: I picked up this EVGA Z68 FTW 160-SB-E689-KR at New Egg for the incredibly low price of $60. I did not read any of the reviews at the time I purchased this motherboard because the price was so good, and I have never had a problem with EVGA products in the past. Recently, I decided to unpack this motherboard and put a nice rig together.

I read every review on this EVGA motherboard here at New Egg and AmaZin Rover. I also carefully checked out the EVGA forums. And that is when my knees began to shake and tremble. Those were the absolute worst horror stories I have ever read about a motherboard and I read a lot of reviews, sometimes daily.

I did not want to even open the package after reading about all the terrible problems people were having with this specific motherboard.

After waiting nearly 4 months, I decided to open the package and try it anyway [all the bells and whistles on this motherboard kept calling my name every time I looked at it]!

Desperately hoping I would be one of the fortunate and lucky ones, I opened the package and began my adventure...

I installed an Intel i5-2500k, a ZALMAN LQ-315 Water Cooler, 16 GB of Corsair Vengeance RAM, a SeaSonic X Series X-850, crossed my fingers, hoped for the best, and hit the power button...all with my knees still shaking and my teeth chattering...

Result: Everything booted up and worked perfect!

Next step, I installed Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit, permitted Windows to do all the critical updates, and again, everything has worked perfect.

So far, I am very, very happy with this motherboard.

I have left the BIOS at the same exact level it was when I purchased this motherboard: BIOS Version 689 1.05 x64

I have heard that BIOS version A05 does quite good too, but I still cannot find the courage to try it.

I have heard many horror stories on the BIOS Version R16 as I read at EVGA Forums. Supposedly a BIOS version R19 is in the making...but I tremble when thinking about trying any BIOS versions other than the original.

So, for now, my system is working A+++ and I am very happy with it. I will update later if I discover anything exciting or improved.

NewEgg rocks! A $300+ motherboard for only $60 with more bells and whistles than I have ever seen in my entire life? How did you guys pull that off anyway?

Personally, I think it's a miracle!

Cons: Only cons I can think of at the moment are all the negative reviews that strike terror in the hearts of system builders and enthusiasts alike!

Hey, I am NOT saying all the negative posts are inaccurate...what I am saying is all the negative posts scared the heck out of me and most certainly many other people, but for some reason, my EVGA Z68 FTW 160-SB-E689-KR motherboard is working perfect!

Oh, one more I wish I had purchased a lot in several dozen of em'...

Other Thoughts: Is it possible, many more people had positive results on this EVGA Z68 FTW 160-SB-E689-KR and haven't posted their results?

Please, if you are a person who purchased a EVGA Z68 FTW 160-SB-E689-KR and had some good results, could you please even the score?

It is me,

Always looking for higher ground....

UPDATE: 03.15.2016 This EVGA Z68 FTW 160-SB-E689-KR motherboard is still performing like brand new and here we are, three years later. I have been extremely pleased with this motherboard.

Remember, this was a $300+ motherboard selling for only $60. What an incredible steal!

Not even a hiccup nor even a bump in the road. Newegg and EVGA totally rock!

3 out of 5 eggshmmm

Pros: board is great over clocker with the k cpu's bios thru the years have improved some thing in the uefi bios borke others.

Cons: evga used to be a great customer service until lately.
when I started having problems with the board. they wanted to rma. That is great service no questions ask. I di the erma and bot the other board before sending in the old one. I replaced the old board. checked and made sure everything was correct and nothing was damaged. like cpu pins and other. now they want me to pay for repair on a board that I don't even need now. isn't that what rma is for replace a defective. product. they said there where bent pins on the cpu socket, and the board needed cleaning.

now I know when I sent the board there were no bent pins. this must have happen during shipping with ups.
making me pay for it doesn't make any since. or even pay for cleaning.

Other Thoughts: if this is what evga is changing too they will or have lost a 10yr costumer.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Clint R,

I am sorry to hear of the problem as I can confirm that if you feel the pins were bent during shipping then we would recommend filing a claim with the shipper to pursue that further. Please understand that physical damage such as bent pins or heavily soiled products will require extra labor to replace that socket or clean that product. Please contact our 24 hour support at 1-888-881-3842 option 1 or by email at as we can discuss this further with you to try and find a resolution.

4 out of 5 eggsAmazing Motherboard

Pros: This thing is a monster and so far has provided amazing performance for me. I was a little worried after reading other people's reviews but I got a good board for very very cheap!

Cons: the tiny fan on the I/O shield was a total waste of space. It was very noisy (just about doubled the noise output of my system) and moves virtually no air. I wish they would have swapped that for more USB ports or even some onboard graphics since there is no way to utilize the graphics capability of the Z68 chipset.

Other Thoughts: Intel Core i7 2600k
NZXT Phantom Full Tower Case
Seagate 120gb SSD
8GB (2x4GB) G. Skill Sniper Series DDR3 RAM 1866

4 out of 5 eggsEVGA Z68 FTW

Pros: Price - got it on sale in Nov 2012 during Newegg fire sale of this board, with rebate it was less S70. Features - abundance of features, and it is rock solid board. Board does not get hot at all with high OC, just warm.

Cons: The shipped A05 BIOS was okay but does not allow any overclocking by changing the VCore. I could only hit 4.3GHz with VCore set to Auto. Any higher will blue screen. R16 BIOS hangs my system. Finally, the recent released R22 BIOS works and I hit 4.6GHz by bumping VCore a little bit.

Other Thoughts: i7-2600k, OC to 4.6GHz, Idle Temp 35C, Load Temp 75C, 1.375 VCore

3 out of 5 eggsnot much luck yet

Pros: Well, its a pretty motherboard. I thought when reading the specs it would be good for my new year computer board Lots of features

Cons: I had two cases to install the motherboard into, however, I had to cut one so I could get the power connector plugged in because it extends into the bays. I have installed all new parts, tested all but the motherboard, processor, and video card in other units. My motherboard will post an error. The booklet for the motherboard is very vague in what the post error is. I will contact EVGA tomorrow, cause I have tried what I can. Hopefully, EVGA tech support can help. I haven't been able to get any video yet

Other Thoughts: In the past, I had always ASUS motherboards, but figured with the price, reputation, and features I would try an EVGA motherboard. If I can't get this problem solved, I sure won't buy another.

Manufacturer Response:

If you have not already done so please contact us at 888-881-3842 so we can identify the error for you. If you have any issues with your replacement please do not hesitate to contact us again.

Thank you,
Brandon B

1 out of 5 eggsWHAT A JOKE! EVGA Support USELESS!

Pros: Specs, looks great, would have been a steal at 59.99 after rebate if it acually worked.

Cons: I am now on my 2nd board (first RMA'ed to EVGA) and this thing is marketed as an enthusiast/overclocking board, problem is you can't overclock it. It doesn't even run at the correct default multiplier. My 2600k defaulted to 33X on the first board and 21x on the second. Dave B. from evga support assured me the 2nd board would be extensively tested before shipping to ensure that it works properly. DIDN'T HAPPEN, obviously. I have tried Windows 7 and 8, every bios, every driver revision. etc.

The 2nd board was even worse than the first! Any changes to voltage or multipliers result in no change at all or crashing. I am sorry, if you market the board having overclocking as a FEATURE it should work AND be supported. However I was given the excuse that they can't garuntee overclocking to work. What a load that is.

It won't even run at 34X which is the correct one for my CPU. I have tried other known good components, CPU, RAM, hard drive and to NO AVAIl! CRASH CRASH CRASH.

I told Dave B. at EVGA I believed the problem to be specific to the model itself and not my specific board and he assured me I was wrong about that and the extensively tested replacement would work fine. As a courtesy the did an advance RMA to keep me going with the first board which only worked at UNDERCLOCKED speeds.

I don't expect EVGA will be making it right either. One lucky person who posted a review here with the same problems was given a Z77FTW by evga for their inconvienience (which Dave B. denied), I could only pray to be so fortunate.

Other Thoughts: I feel like I have been defrauded of $89.99 and 40 hours of my time!

Manufacturer Response:

I apologize that you are having and issue with your board. We believe we may have a solution for your problem, please contact me directly at

Thank you,
Brandon B

4 out of 5 eggsGreat Customer Service

Pros: Works great for Intel CPUs. Lots of PCI-E and SATA ports.
Bios easy to understand.
Tech Support was very helpful and polite.

Cons: First one was defective with Code "C" and had bent CPU socket pins.
Doesn't print money.

Other Thoughts: Great motherboard for $60 (after rebate). Ordered it back in November and didn't get it working until January. The defective board I RMA'd back to EVGA just as they were closed for the holidays so I didnt get it until 3 weeks later. Bad timing on my part. Tech Support was very helpful in getting my motherboard to work and resolved the problem to the Power Supply

2 out of 5 eggsDefective

Pros: The board looks great out of the box. Seems very sturdy and complete.

Cons: DOA. I bought this board with the plan to put a system together for my sister (for her xmas). Well, after trying out three different sets of RAMs (listed specifically for this board) I still could not get this pass POST - error 55. Checked on the net and various people suggested to reseat the CPU. Well, have done that and still no luck.

Other Thoughts: I've often purchased ASUS for my systems. Figure I should try out EVGA board but this just doesn't look good. Quite disappointed that it fails right out of the box. Now I gotta try to RMA the darn thing.

Another thing to note about this board, the angle for the ATX power port is horizontal to the board, so it's quite difficult to work with. I would rather see board with port set vertically (like other boards out there).

1 out of 5 eggsTERRIBLE BIOS

Pros: My first impression of this board was great. Packaging, construction, features, this thing is nice. Unfortunately the stock BIOS is useless. Changing the CPU Vcore from auto to manual results in the bios looping and not being able to get into the OS unless you reset CMOS.

Cons: After testing the R14 and R16 BIOS, i am still unable to even overclock, not to mention they are riddled with other bugs. Also, after flashing the bios to the r14 and r16, i have lost performance from the cpu. benchmarked with passmark and crysis cpu benchmark and both showed performance losses. Overclocking on the newer revisions also show negative losses. Expect Blue screens, issues with the board starting when making even the simplest of changes ect.

My previous build was a 2600k with an Asus z68-v pro and it was by far a superior board. I payed $85 dollars for this board on black friday and to be honest, it's not even worth that.

On the upside i was able to get EVGA to assist me at first, but they have seemed to given up and no longer respond to my emails. Bottom line is that this will be the last EVGA product i will buy.

Other Thoughts: I7 2700k
Corsair H100
Rosewill Thor V2
G-skill sniper 16GB 1866
2x GTX580 SLI
Rosewill Lightning 1000W psu

5 out of 5 eggsSo many negative reviews

Pros: I literally wrote this review just because of how many negative reviews this has. This board is great! I purchased 2 within 3 months and both are running great.

Cons: No easy mode overclock

Other Thoughts: Always bought EVGA products, and not one has been DOA or died, and that included my P4 Prescott processor or my Core 2 Duo still running.
