The Radeon HD 4870 X2 incorporates the latest ATI Avivo HD Technology for enhanced video display, and a second generation built-in UVD 2 (Unified Video decoder 2) for the hardware accelerated decoding of Blu-ray and HD DVD content for VC-1, H.264 and MPEG-2 codecs, reducing CPU load. Via the included DVI-to-HDMI adapter, this card supports multi-channel audio formats (up to 7.1) and combines audio and video output on a single cable for direct connection to an HDMI-ready display. Support for DirectX10.1 ensures optimal compatibility with all DirectX10.1 applications, and enables stunning 3D graphics and shading effects in the latest games.

1 out of 5 eggsPoor quality

Pros: Fast.

Cons: Poor quality. I've had two of these fail on me, each after about two years of use. Also, it seems like for most games, only one of the two GPUs works no matter what setting you use (yes, Crossfire was enabled in the Catalyst control center).

3 out of 5 eggsWorked great for 2 years

Pros: Able to handle almost anything you throw at it (maybe not some of the newst 2013 titles maxed out). Also has a good looking girl on it.

Cons: Runs super hot. One of the GPU's would go up to 115C while the other one would be around 60-70C. Very bad load balancing. After about 2 years I started seeing artifacts popping up more and more until the computer would just crash whenever I loaded a game. Popped my old GTX 260 back in and everything was fine.

Other Thoughts: Last time I'll go with an ATI/AMD card. Just got a GTX 660 for my desktop and a GTX 680m for my laptop. Both are incredible without any issues and don't heat up much at all (stock cooling).

1 out of 5 eggsTerrible card

Pros: Was great for a while, then....

Cons: Card overheats. Intermitantly shuts down. Took 2 months to pin it down to this card. Saphire said it was probably my power supply until I told them it was a 1100watt. Was better to buy a new 6000 series card than to try to get fixed. My XFX 6870 supports DX10/11 and is better. Oh and double lifetime warranty.

Other Thoughts: I've only owned this Saphire card, but other people I know have them and attest to them being a decent company. I would not recommend this card to anybody who uses a computer.

5 out of 5 eggsEqual to a 6970!

Pros: With the latest drivers, the 4870x2 scales near 100%! If you look at AnandTech's benchmark database, the 4870 performs about half as well as the 6970 so the 4870x2 performs equally. That's amazing because this card can be purchased used for less than half the cost of a 6970 making it the clear choice for anyone looking to build a monster rig on a budget. I'm using a Z68 motherboard and have two 4870x2s paired up in CrossfireX, and I ran the same benchmarks AnandTech just ran on the new 7970 and this setup performs 25% better! And at a total used cost of less than half the cost of that card.

Cons: Stock fan is loud. Card runs very hot with the stock fan. Power hog - for CrossfireX, you can get by with a good 850w power supply but you really need a good 1kw power supply to be safe.

Other Thoughts: If you're planning to buy one used, get a DangerDen water block and water cool it, those are going for pretty cheap as well. I suggest 1x120mm rad per card so if you're going to do CrossfireX, then you want a 2x120mm rad and you'll get load temps of around 60C and idle temps of 40C.

2 out of 5 eggsFAILED 6 months after warranty

Pros: Was a great card and ran everything.

Other Thoughts: $500 card dies after just over 2 years. Not happy about that. Been running a high quality 850W PS so thats not the problem.

5 out of 5 eggsFailed

Pros: Awesome card, played all games I had and that I've purchased since at max settings at 1680*1050.

Cons: Big and hot. Any kind of dust gets in the heat sink and the temps just sky rocket, keep a can of compressed air handy to blow it out regularly.

Other Thoughts: I started having PC issues 4 days before the warranty on this card expired. The issues were so intermittent it was very hard to narrow it down, I wasn't getting any visual errors it'd just shut down and restart - and not want to reboot a couple times. this happened more and more over the next month, I finally got it diagnosed that the video card was failing, I don't have a spare video card so I can't swap it out, but now I'm starting to get all kinds of artifacts and the system won't run for more then a couple minutes before the screen sheers and gets all messed up - think rainbow colors all over the screen in staticy blocks. I tried to get the card RMA'd through sapphire but because I'm 4 weeks over the warranty period they won't honor the warranty.

I now am in the market for a new video card and I sure wont be buying an ATI/Sapphire when I can get a lifetime warranty on all EVGA cards, no point. if a $600 card fails it's replaced for a lifetime, not 2 years.

5 out of 5 eggsSimply awesome!

Pros: I bought this card in early 2009, when it was the best all-around gaming card. It's still running new games at high quality graphics with minimal lag. No problems whatsoever with it. Best graphics investment I have ever made.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: Newegg has this card discontinued and unavailable now. If you can find it elsewhere for cheap, go for it!

2 out of 5 eggs2.5 years and 3 cards later

Pros: Runs any game you throw at it.

Cons: I have had this card for 2.5 years and my 3rd card exploded on me. Now I am going to get my 4rth and final card. This is my last straw. This card over heats under too much stress. I have a fan built into my tower that sits right on top of this video card and it still exploded on me. This card will not last you a year. Mark my words. Do not put this card under a lot of stress. Just play your games normally and it will be fine. I was using fraps and the hog of a program was too much for this video card.

5 out of 5 eggsDoes exactly what we need it to

Pros: I work at a surveying company where we deal with harsh amount of point clouds in the hundred of billions. We also do high-res orthography up 1.5" resolution pictures. I have installed this card on three computers and none of them have had any hook-ups, and all worked better than we expected to. The only thing that you need to be aware of is that this card requires two power connectors to be connected to it, so be sure that you have a beefy power supply with lots of PCI-E power connectors.

Cons: None - Read Below

Other Thoughts: This this is HUGE....weighs over 5 kilos and is so long, that I bought a case specifically to handle it's length. This card will not fit in most mid-size cases that have the hard drives running in line with the case, as opposed to having them be perpendicular. Be sure you have a nice big case before purchasing this card.
