Great!!!!
- Pros: Upgrading from 3870 to this was like going from a honda to a BMW!
Great card and it runs everything perfect!
- Cons: Runs Hotter than the 3870.
It dosent taste as good as pancakes!
- Other Thoughts: Buy it
Decent performance for the price
- Pros: - affordable price at the time of purchase(140$)
- Cons: can't think of any
- Other Thoughts: This is a good card if you know what you are paying for, I mean it performs very well for things that doesn't require too much graphics muscles like most of the games(tomb raider underworld, fallout 3, bioshock on highest setting, running 1080p videos in multiple windows at the same time etc) but don't expect it to shatter any benchmarks. Early levels of Crysis runs fine on medium settings and acceptable on High setting but later levels start showing some serious lag(~ 10 fps). Make sure you read the benchmark score for various graphic cards on the 3DMark06 website before you make the decision for which card to purchase so you know what you are getting.
Great Card, Sub-par Cooling
- Pros: This card is a great mid-level gamer. I've built 6 machines between myself and friends around this chip and it's stunning for the price. It runs everything from Crysis to Team Fortress 2 very well. It's a nice little boost with the 1 gig memory over the 512 meg
- Cons: The cooler on this particular version is very weak. I was seeing idle temps of 57-60 c and that's in an Antec 900 2 case with all fans on full plus an additional side fan. This is also with fans set manually to 100%. The fan has barely any increase in sound when you turn it manually to 100% and upon inspection of the heatsink itself, it's made of a very light weight aluminum. There is one tiny piece of copper on the whole thing, where it actually contacts the GPU. So, with a weak heatsink and weaker fan, the memory chips get awfully warm.
- Other Thoughts: Don't get me wrong, I would definately buy another HD 4850, I'd just spend the extra money off the bat to get one with a better cooler. I owned an HD 4850 2 weeks before it hit newegg and even that reference design cooled much, MUCH better than this one. Even when I added a Zalman VF1000 to this card, the reference card cooled better at 50% with the zalman maxed out.
