Suits my needs
- Pros: Silent, low profile and narrow (to fit in single PCI slot without blocking adjacent slot), inexpensive.
- Cons: Runs hot, not suitable for gaming, requires very good case airflow which kind-of negates the fact that it is low profile and narrow - you need additional fans or lots of free space around it to keep it from getting too hot.
As another reviewer has stated, the driver software (catalyst) scales the display of my HDTV to about 50% by default (small display in the middle of my large screen). The setting for display scaling is BURRIED in the catalyst settings. From that previous review:
"1) Catalyst Control Center | Desktop & Displays, Right click the triangle above the small display icon (bottom left), Configure. Scaling Options, 0% - and it now fills the screen! (obvious isn't it?) "
Well, NO - it's not obvious at all!! I'm sure many other users are spending hours trying to figure out what the h*ll is wrong! Scaling should be set to 0% by default!!!!!!
- Other Thoughts: I got this card not for gaming, but for running windows 7, photoshop, and watching HDTV. Mine is crammed into a small form-factor case with the adjacent PCi slot occupied by a TV tuner card. In my installation, there is very little free space around the card, and no additional case fans. Even with my limited demands on the GPU (watching HDTV and running Windows 7 Aero theme), the card gets very hot. I underclocked the card to 300 mhz GPU and 400 mhz RAM and attached an aluminum plate (from a busted HDD enclosure) to the heatsink to help dissapate heat. This keeps the card in the low to mid 50's at idle or watching TV and it may peak in the low 60's running Windows 7 Aero and "windowing" around a lot. Based on the overclocking temperature "gauge" in the catalyst software, this seems to be safe.
4 eggs because dispite all the headaches, it works, and there is really nothing else out there that fits my needs (silent and fits into a tiny space).
SO SO
- Pros: Beats what is on the MoBo
- Cons: Gets hot.
- Other Thoughts: Just better that what is on most MoBo video chipsets. The price was right.
Good, but Hot
- Pros: Low profile and will fit in most small form factor PCs and produces a display of good quality; completely silent
- Cons: Runs very hot
- Other Thoughts: I purchased this card for my Gateway SX2802-03, it just fit and actually worked extremely well. However it generated a lot of heat. Ordinarily, this computer is an extremely cool running PC, but the addition of this card bumped the heat level in the case way up. It also blocked what little air gets to the hard drive, causing it to become burning hot as well.
I decided not to keep the card as my goal with this PC was to keep it as cool running as possible since most of my previous issues with computers have been the result of them running too hot.
