Excellent Video Card
- Pros: I got my 5870 today and installed it in my system. Before I did that, I ran 3DMark 06, and Vantage while my 4870 X2 was installed. Here are the numbers I got when I tested the 5870, and then compared the results to my earlier 4870 X2 results. In 3DMark 06 the 4870 X2 scored 23,379 Points and the 5870 scored 23,127 Points. The separation between the two cards was 1%. In Vantage, my 4870 X2 scored 17,190 points, while my 5870 scored 17,161 points. The difference here is 0.1%. All in all, the cards pretty much ran Identical. Thats great considering the 5870 has a single GPU. I also noted temperature and fan speed differences at idle. The 4870 X2 at idle was 68 degrees Celsius with a fan speed of 27%. The 5870 was 43 degrees Celsius with a fan speed of 21%. The 5870 is significantly cooler, and quieter. All cards were tested at there default clock speeds.
- Cons: None... Great card
- Other Thoughts: My system... Asus P6T6 Revolution mainboard, Intel i7 940 overclocked to 3.65Ghz, Corsair 1600 Mhz DDR3 Dominator Ram, Corsair 750 Watt Power supply, and of course the Radeon HD 5870.
Since these cards ran so close in speed, could I be Processor Limited?? Not sure. I do know the higher I overclock the processor, the better the frame rates in these tests.
great performance
- Pros: Overclocks to the highest allowable settings in CCC of 900/1300. Ran 3DMark 2001SE, 2003, 2006, and Vantage. Scores were in order, 63024, 87039, 26385, and P18732. Very similar scores to 2 Sapphire 4890 vapor-x in crossfire on the same system. For a single card it performs above my expectations.
So far I really like it. Planning a second one as soon as there is more in stock.
- Cons: It's large. Very long card. Only stock cooling solution available at the moment. Stock cooler sounds like a hairdryer at 100%. Needs an update to CCC to allow overclocks higher than 900/1300. This could use 2GB of DDR5 for high resolutions.
- Other Thoughts: System specs

Amazing Card
- Pros: Simply fast. I have 2 of these cards running Crossfire and I get a Vantage score of 26600. Cost is fairly cheap compared to high end Nvidia cards when they first get pushed out into the market. I'm glad ATI didn't put this card up in the 500s when it first came out. Temperatures are pretty good considering the power these cards push out. Power consumption is also better than previous 4 series cards.
- Cons: It's long, very long. You would want to consider a bigger case, I can barely fit these into my Antec 900. Drivers are always an issue when new products comes out.
- Other Thoughts: I waited a while to do the review because I wanted to make sure these cards had a fair chance with newer drivers. Simply put it this way, these cards are the best out there. Don't let the 5970 fool you. Two of these crossfire are faster than the 5970. My 3D Vantage mark is 29706 with my 8800GT running as a Physx card. The VaporX version is something to look forward to.
hot stuff!
- Pros: This thing is a beast. As many have said, single fastest GPU on the market today, with fermi still far on the horizon. And to boot, the power consumption and temperature isn't astronomically high as has been a trend with some cards.
All games at max resolution and details and this thing laughs. It does! I hear it!
- Cons: A member of clan Huge McLarge. This thing is really long, dwarfed only by the 5970. Make sure you have the space for it....
expensive-ish. Low supply drives up the price too. However, 380-400$ for earth shattering performance isn't THAT bad.
- Other Thoughts: system is a phenom II 955 at 3.4ghz, 4gb of 1066mhz ram... i ran 3dmark vantage before (with a sapphire 4870 512mb) and after... and there was a near *five thousand point* increase. I was floored!
Great card if you can get your hands on one
- Pros: Powerful, quiet, efficient video card. FOR THOSE OF YOU THINKING ABOUT GETTING ANY BRAND OF 5870 I HIGHLY RECOMMEND DOWNLOADING THE LATEST 9.11 DRIVER FROM ATI. Any older drivers will cause artifacts in Crysis.
- Cons: People complain about the size, however it fit in my mid-size atx case fine. Sure it's a bit heavy, but who cares? The stock cooling system adds a lot of weight. In addition, there are two screw attach points for the back of the case so it sits very stable. For those of you out there frustrated with the availability I can give you one tip: check NewEgg often. I sit in front of a computer all day at my job and was constantly scanning the internet for one of these - newegg was my only success - and even then they were only in stock for a couple minutes.
- Other Thoughts: I won't lie and say it plays every game out there at max settings because the only game I've played on it so far is Crysis. But if this card can run Crysis at "very high" then it should be able to run just about anything. You will hear this card when you're playing games. Live with it and turn up your speakers. Due to the technology it's the most efficient card for the processing power out there (besides maybe the 5970). Don't get excited about trying to overclock this card. You won't be able to push it much further. Just enjoy the great amount of power you'll be getting for the price. I'll also add that I've always been a die-hard Nvidia fan...until now:)
