Prepare to experience a riveting high-definition gaming experience with ATI Radeon HD 5850 graphics processors. Expand your visual real estate across up to three displays and get lost in the action with revolutionary ATI Eyefinity Technology. Using ATI Stream technology, accelerate even the most demanding applications and do more than ever with your PC. The first to deliver full support for Microsoft DirectX 11, these GPUs enable rich, realistic visuals and explosive HD gaming performance so you can dominate the competition.
Pros: * Delivers excellent performance in a single card * 40nm - low power consumption, less heat for performance delivered (lowest in its class) * Noise doesn't exceed other case fans unless you manually force it to a high setting - then it's pretty loud * Overclocks very well - pushing the max in GPU and memory clock in ATI Overdrive is no problem - you'll need "unofficial" apps to push it further; HD 5870 clocks are easily reachable - Has circuitry to bump up voltage for extreme OC (third-party apps again) * Length is suitable for most cases (*See other thoughts) * DX11 compliant - the new DirectX standard starting with Windows 7, and DX11 features looks great! * Plenty of output connections including native HDMI with audio support - VGA with included adapter, both DVI connections can convert to HDMI with sound as well * Eyefinity multi-monitor setup (*See other thoughts) ** Closed cooler design streamlines airflow and diverts heat out of the back of the case
Cons: * Availability - This seems to be easing just in time for the holidays - I spent days of constant refreshing before finally being able to get one * Price - well above the release price due to shortage * Documentation - General installation guidelines with nothing specific to the 5000-series. Included driver CD is outdated and on-disc manual only includes information for 4000-series and lower. You are better off downloading the driver from the AMD site. Also, with Catalyst 9.11, you do not have to download the hotfix from the Sapphire site, but there's no indication of that anywhere - you have to ask Sapphire directly to learn this. * Length of card may block some SATA ports, but enough clearance to use L-plug cables. * "Bundled" game Dirt2 must be downloaded from (free) Steam account - direct download would have been more desirable ** Closed cooler design makes it impossible to blow out dust without disassembly - would doing this void my warranty?
Other Thoughts: Even with shortage-bloated prices, the HD5850 is still cheaper than the nVidia GTX285 while delivering better performance @ lower power; between this and a GTX285, it's a no-brainer. And if you were waiting for the Fermi cards, maybe they'll outperform this series (a big "maybe"), but at what cost?
The length is roughly the same as a standard ATX/mATX motherboard, so if your case can accept full-height cards and doesn't have anything hanging low over the motherboard, you should be able to fit this card.
Eyefinity with three monitors requires using the DisplayPort connection in one form or another. Apparently, only an expensive active (powered) adapter, to convert it to HDMI or DVI, is necessary for acceptable results, since DP-capable monitors are few and far between. I suppose if you're going to buy more monitors just for an Eyefinity setup, the additional cost isn't that big a deal. Maybe DP monitors will become more popular...

Pros: I won't pretend to be a guru here, but this card IS AWESOME!! I just upgraded from an EVGA GTX 260 SC (which on it's own is a great card) and the first thing I did was jump into Crysis Warhead, pump all settings up to Enthusiast and gave it a shot. My GTX 260 ran this OK on Enthusiast... it was a tiny bit choppy at times but ran OK maxed out.
the 5850 - BUTTERY SMOOTH. It took 2 seconds to initially load all the extra detail but the card just ate it all up like a beast! To whoever it was that said it sucked on Crysis due to the lack of PhysX, I'm not sure what was wrong with your system but i saw a VAST improvement if anything.
DX 11 support. Future-proofing!
For all the pros, just look up any benchmark review done online. It beats the GTX 285 is almost everything, is cheaper, uses less power, doesn't get as hot.. need I go on?
It's possible to overclock this card to faster speeds than the stock 5870.. don't know that I will bother yet though.
Cons: It was nearly impossible to get my hands on this! Luckily I have Mondays off work, so I was just bumming around on here when i was auto-notified that there were more in stock. Good thing i got in there too as they were sold out again by the end of the day :P
Other Thoughts: System specs that I have here, compare to yours to see if you'll be bottlenecked at all: this FABULOUS card amd phenom II x4 940 3.0ghz ocz reaper ddr2 1066 4gb wd caviar black 640gb corsair tx750 watt psu gigabyte ma790x-ud4p mobo
and my comparison card upgraded from: EVGA gtx 260 superclocked edition, which I bought here in July.
I had actually ordered 2 of the GTX 260s to run in SLI, but found out that I'd have to rebuild my system with a different motherboard that supported SLI, whereas mine is AMD-based and only supports CrossFire, so that's the first reason I switched to the 5850. Also- Futureproofing. DX 11 and windows 7.

Pros: I'll start by saying this is fast. I upgraded from an overclocked 8800 GTS 512 to this, and it's about double the performance in everything. Far Cry 2 with maxed out everything is still very smooth, the 8800 couldn't even play it with maxed out settings.
It clocks down when not in 3d applications, as I type this it is only running at 400 mhz to save power and put out less heat. As soon as I load any 3d game, it bumps back up to full speed and flies! This is nice as the fan barely has to run to keep it cool, making it near silent when not in 3d games.
Huge overclocking potential with proper cooling.
only 4 out of 5 eggs due to driver glitches. I used the latest available from ATI's website.
Cons: I stopped using ATI a few years back due to glitchy drivers and support, after a few friends bought this from newegg and gave it rave reviews I decided to give them a try again. Sure enough within 10 minutes of plugging it in I found 2 glitches already
1. I'm using a dual monitor setup, both TV and monitor running at 1080p. As soon as I plugged the television in, the screen was distorted and not full size, even though Windows reports that it was running in 1080p it was clearly not. I had to plug the TV into the top DVI port on the video card for the screen to look right, a rather strange glitch as both DVI ports should be the same.
2. I started playing with the overclocking features, and turned on the built in ATI overdrive feature, as soon as I did this one of the two monitors would started flashing every 5 seconds or so, I even tried 724 Mhz, and it still causes this issue. Basically anything but the spot on 725 Mhz causes flashing on one of the two monitors.
Other Thoughts: After a week of running this on the stock heatsink, which does a decent job btw, my waterblock came in. I was able to bump the voltage up to 1.2, and the GPU speed to 1 Ghz and memory to 1200 Mhz, all by using MSI afterburner.
Note: MSI Afterburner is the new replacement for riva_tuner, use it for all your monitoring and overclocking needs.
a lot of people think you need to flash firmware or other crazy things with these cards to overclock past the 775 Mhz BIOS limit, but in the Msiafterburner.cfg file there is a setting called "EnableUnofficialOverclocking" setting it to 1, allows you to overclock much higher. Just be careful not to up the voltage too high.
Make sure to create and save two profiles in Afterburner, one for 3d games with high speed settings, and another with stock speeds, so it can cool down and run silent when in 2d mode and automatically rev up when in 3d games. Then you get the best of both worlds.

Pros: Perfect for overclocking. Best card on the market for the price/performance. Runs Lord of the Rings Online @ ultra-high while maintaining 180+ fps. Drops that used to be around 2 fps now barely get lower that 60 fps.
Cons: Price would be a con if the card didn't perform so well.
Other Thoughts: I will buy another for crossfire.

Pros: Card is fan-friggin-tastic!! Runs Lord of the Rings Online® with all ultra- high settings and still gets consistently over 180 fps.
VERY Overclock-able too. Big, but not too big.
Windows Experience Rating for this card was 7.7.
Got this on a combo with a $20 discount.
Cons: Price would be a con if the card didn't make everything look so beautiful!
But if you can wait alittle while, I'm sure the prices will drop once they are kept in stock...
Also, the driver update was 97MB...
Other Thoughts: I can't even imagine this card in crossfire, wow, right now for me its overkill, but since it has that capability, I will, do it in the future.
VERY HAPPY with this purchase!
