Smooth
- Pros: The 256 MB version may not be quite enough for maximum setting in some games, but it runs World of Warcraft and Mass Effect at very high settings perfectly. I've been loyal to Asus for some years now and they've never once let me down. This really is the best bang for the buck, in stores or online.
- Cons: Big profile might cut off slots, make sure you're not going to need the nearest PCI slot or whatever you have that's going to be buried under that fan. It heats up pretty well in warm areas, but I'd expect that so didn't dock it a point. Pretty much any card in this category will heat up fast at this level of power output.
- Other Thoughts: Newegg, as always, rocks my world.
Good Card
- Pros: It's a 8800gt, for the money the 8800gt is the best card on the market. Glaciator fan is large and keeps temp under control - 50c at idle, never seen it higher then 63c after gaming (currently playing Bioshock). Stable and smooth.
- Cons: With 256 mg memory this card is for 17" or 19" monitors. Mated with Hanns.G 19" widescreen with max 1440 x 900. So if you're using a larger monitor the 512 mg model would probably be a better choice.
- Other Thoughts: Be aware that the Asus GamerOsd and SmartDoc software works fine, just be sure to take it out of Windows startup routine, as it does cause issues. I used msconfig.exe (Windows XP, not sure if Vista retains this), and simply load the programs manually.
Nice, but...
- Pros: Runs cool and quiet. Very good price.
- Cons: 256MB is NOT enough for some games, like Crysis. Check the benchmarks on various review sites, you will see. I sold this card to a buddy for cheap and bought a 1GB 8800GT card and am much happier. With the 1GB card, I can run Crysis at 1920x1200 on high, or 1280x800 on very high and get very playable frame rates. With the 256MB card, it was not playable.
