5 out of 5 eggsTips for nubes

Pros: Hi, just a word about these older cards. You CAN get a great deal on refurbished cards, if you watch what you are buying and look at the specs.

Generally, if you get a GTX 460 or above, or a GTX 560 or GTX 650ti or above, you can grab a nice video card that will play almost all of the games out today with at least a dual core, preferably three or four, cpu and four gigs of memory or more with WinXP or 8 Gigs with Win7 or 8.

Look for cards that run DX11, have at least around 90MB/sec memory bandwidth, and memory of DDR5 speeds at 1G or above.

You can pick them up here sometimes for avout 100 bucks to 150 bucks. The newest cards of course are the better preforming ones, say a GTX 660 2Gig will outperform a GTX480 but you will be unlikely to find them on refurbished list for more than a few hours, they go fast I currently have three GTX460s that run well with Far Cry 3 and other newest games. Note: you have to have Win7 for DX11 to run, ugh, means new OS to run the best games, tho SOME games like Far Cry 3 will run very well on DX10 or 9 with a four core and a single 460.

I am also running a 460 SLI rig with a I-5 and 16 G memory which will really hold in there at almost ultra levels with FC3 and BF3. Note: BF3 needs DX11 which means Win7 to even run. Bah.

Anyway, with a little luck you don't get a lemon from the peeps refurbing, here you can at least return it IF you buy it from NEWEGG and get it back to them within 30 days of purchase for replacement.

I have bought about 5 different cards here refurbed and each worked as well as a new one, in fact, I think they may have been new, just no extras like adapters.

YOUR mileage may vary

Cons: You take a risk if you don't check out the new stuff and compare the important things like memory bandwidth, DX capability, and memory size, cause you could buy a nice 650 ti boost for about the same as a lower performing refurb if you weren't carefull.

Other Thoughts: Watch and try to match up the processor capability with the video card capability, don't put a Titan into a dual core 2.0Ghz setup with 2 gigs of system memory.

Lowest of budget builds will do okay with a 8800GT with 512G of DDR3 memory (same as a 9800GT) and a dual core if you will be satisfied playing the slightly older games like Far Cry 2, Battlefield 2, and other 2 series games, heh. Keep an eye on the memory bandwidth, that is a key component of video performance. More of that is better.

Radeons are nice for some. I just don't use them, cause I like GeForce and don't have trouble with them so far, thier drivers are easy to setup.
