Ultimate Cooling

DirectCU II with SSU architecture
DirectCU II with SSU Architecture
20% Cooler, 3X Quieter

ASUS graphics card engineering leads the industry once again with the introduction of DirectCU II SSU thermal design. Comprising two "S" and one "U" shapes, the new heatpipes are precision shaped for optimal efficiency and heat transference. They are also nickel-plated to minimize oxidization, with their mid-section now placed directly over the GPU die. This design shortens heat transfer travel to lower thermal resistance and creates bi-directional flow for up to twice the cooling capacity in the same space as that required by existing graphics card cooler designs. High-conductivity copper used in heatpipe formulation creates tube-like vapor chambers, moving heat to a large aluminum heatsink that features extended fins for multiple points of dissipation. The assembly is further chilled by two high performance but carefully-tuned and sound-dampened fans for faster and quieter cooling.

Ultimate Stability

1 out of 5 eggsAnother victim of this card

Pros: Handles recent games perfectly at maximum graphics settings... for about 10 minutes.

Cons: Utterly unstable and unreliable. Crashes on any game after roughly 5-10 minutes, even games from 1999. Unable to find a fix or to get decent customer support.

Other Thoughts: Like many others giving 1-egg ratings for this card, I'm having the same black screen/ lost display signal crashes forcing hard resets. All of my computer hardware is brand new and worked perfectly fine with my old card, which was defective as well.

The 770 I bought gives no insight as to what causes the crashes, and it looks like it's working when it is, in fact, broken. This is the second time IN A ROW that I buy a defective GPU and my anger and disappointment is near boiling point. I asked countless friends, strangers, forums, tried every fix I could find, updated every driver, tried every PCI slot... Nothing works. The card still gives black screen crashes.

I tried fixes for too long and saw my 30-days return from Newegg disappear. Also, the ASUS customer support for RMA is pathetic at best and I can't seem to get a straight answer from them as to how to return the card. All in all, I threw 700$ for two defective GPUs and I am considering reverting to console gaming.

1 out of 5 eggsBlack Screen Lock-Ups

Pros: Was a really nice fast card when it worked, was a huge step up from my old rig hobbling around on EVGA GTS450.

Cons: It would regularly flash to a black screen and freeze my entire PC, requiring a hard reset to get around. I tested everything (memory, CPU, PSU) and even re-formatted and re-installed Windows 7 with just bare-bones drivers to eliminate all potential software conflicts. Every freeze left no indicators in the event viewer as to what caused or lead up to the system freeze. Would crash consistently in any game environment and even froze opening up Chrome and Picture Viewer once each. Even low stress games like Killingfloor (a game built out of a 10 year old Unreal 2004 mod), even though an hour long FurMark stress test never caused the card to fail or blip over 81C.

But as soon as I removed the card and plugged in my old EVGA GTS450, the black freezes stopped and I haven't had another once since. Even got another GTX770, an EVGA SuperClocked, and have had zero black screen freezes. So yeah, the problem was the ASUS card, which made my system simply unusable for the gaming it was built for.

Had Newegg RMA the card for me.

Other Thoughts: Huge props to Newegg for their awesome customer service.

While I have an ASUS motherboard because they make really reliable motherboards, don't get this card. It seems like this is a prevalent problem with ASUS high end CUII Kepler cards, including their GTX780 and GTX780Ti.

But hell, the GTX970's just launched and they come stock with 4GB vRAM and with a greater amount of CUDA cores and more efficient architecture, and they are way cheaper than this card. Save your money, get a GTX970 if you can get your hands on one. Hopefully ASUS's GTX970 fares better than this card did for me.

4 out of 5 eggsSecond Time's a Charm

Pros: Exceptionally powerful GPU
More memory than most will need
Great cooling system
Quiet!!
ShadowPlay is still very nice

Cons: First card shipped to me caught fire in my rig. Had to fight customer support for an RMA. (second one works great)

Factory OC seems to be done poorly, I had to adjust the OC settings to prevent artifacting in games.

Other Thoughts: If you're just getting a card for gaming, you're probably best off with the 2GB version or spending a little more for the next model.

1 out of 5 eggsIncredibly disappointed

Pros: The card themselves look pretty awesome. They currently make fantastic looking paperweights.

Cons: I absolutely could not get these cards to run stably. I couldn't be in windows for more than 10 minutes without it crashing, not BSOD, simply locking the entire system up forcing a restart. The screen would usually go black, though on occasion it fill the entire monitor with one color and the other monitor with another color; never the same color interestingly enough. The only error I ever received was Kernel Power 41 (63), which likely occurred when I pressed the reset button.

I've tried everything to resolve the crashing issues that have plagued me on these cards.
New drivers
old drivers
installing drivers in safe mode
new windows install (win 7, 8, and 8.1)
underclocking/overclocking (very minor tweaks to see if it made a difference)
disabling BIOS features for automatic overclocking
checking to make sure I met the power requirements (850w, 12v rails run at 70a, plenty for the cards)

It didn't really seem to matter what I was doing, it would crash the system. Everything from WoW to Star Citizen, watching netflix to running 3d mark (I was running this to see if it was crashing from something like overheating or voltage spikes in MSI afterburner/GPU Tweak/HWMonitor), even just sitting idly in Windows would cause a crash. I put my old 460 back in there to see if it was the motherboard (I bought it at the same time as the graphics cards) that was causing issues and the motherboard appears to be rock solid.

I have gone so far as to purchase a new PSU on the off chance there is something wrong with my PSU, though I'm convinced that at this point it's the cards and not my parts. If the new PSU doesn't resolve my issue, I will be RMAing this card immediately. Unfortunately, newegg will send me replacement cards that likely will not work as this appears to be a common issue with these cards, at least according to the tomshardware.com forums.

If, and this is a big if, I get the issue resolved and the cards are working great, I'll update my review accordingly as well as post detailed instructions of what I did to fix it.

Other Thoughts: I have never been more disappointed in an ASUS product. I own numerous products from them and this is the first time I've been severely disappointed with the quality of their products.

It would appear that ASUS and/or newegg have merged this product with the 2GB version. I purchased GTX770-DC2OC-4GD5.

1 out of 5 eggsBad card

Pros: Runs great when it works.

Cons: Sounds like a demented cricket when idling, and the card crashes after 10-20 minutes in any game; requiring a complete shutdown and restart to get out of. Customer support from Asus has tried to be helpful but is VERY non-English, and as a result I have been seriously considering hiring a Chinese translator just so I can read my email. The card is very pretty and I want to like it, but it's RMA time I think.

1 out of 5 eggsVery Dissapointed

Pros: so lets start by saying the gtx 770 is a good chip(notice how i said "chip"and not card) it will run pretty much anything you throw at it.
however this is not a good card.

Cons: crashes regularly, resulting in a hard system reset, no support on the asus website except the driver and gpu tweak that comes in the box with the card. DONT BUY THIS CARD it is my belief after the second card that im about to RMA that there is an issue with firmware that has not been resolved.

Other Thoughts: so lets talk about what happens with this card, it will entirely crash the display after anywhere from 15 min to 3 hrs depending on the game/workload. 1: for anyone that says this is a driver/mainboard bios/power supply issue. no, it is definitely not. i have tried old drivers, new drivers, disabling audio drivers, NO DRIVER FIXES THIS, as for mother board bios i have tried new, and old in combo with old, new drivers. and the power supply should be more than enough to handle this card. now onto why i think this a firmware issue, this is a 4gb model gtx770 there is also a 2gb version, now doing alot of research online it seems that both cards have many people reporting the same problem as mine. the difference is that with the 2gb version the issue has seemed to be corrected with a vbios update. there is no such cure however for the 4gb model so i believe that these cards share a very similar problem it is just that the 4gb has not been solved yet.

in conclusion if you have to buy this card get the 2gb model, it has more support and has some of the bugs worked out already.

1 out of 5 eggsBe Careful

Pros: The video card is able to run games current games with very high frame per second rate even in full high definition.

Cons: Asus has incomplete support for this version of the card and has not solved a few issues that have been solved for its 2GB counterpart. The card as it is will crash on many games and it is not a driver issue but a firmware issue.

Other Thoughts: In general seems like a good option, but if you can choose I would go for another card. Be careful that if you buy this item you might be stuck with it without possibilities of getting a refund.

2 out of 5 eggsDOA

Pros: -seemed to run quiet
-easy driver update/monitor utility
-preformed well for the 10min that it lasted while under gaming load
-preformed fine for web browsing or streaming video
-

Cons: -crashed 10min into my first gaming session after initial install and would not last long than 2min while in game after.
-Eventually got to the pt where windows crashed during start up

Other Thoughts: Did my fair share of research and contact with tech support saw others on boards and such with similar crashing with no sure fix. After trying it on three different systems, bios/driver updating and tweaking, underclocking, and all the basic connection/power checks it still not running. Will be looking to RMA

Manufacturer Response:

4 out of 5 eggsBad Card - ASUS Service Support

Pros: This is just a follow of my review and the service support dealing with RMA Service.
ASUS has been very helpful in dealing with the RMA. I had even told them I removed the stock cooler so as to install a waterblock. They still honored the warranty as long as I had the original cooler and reinstalled it. They could have told me right then and there that it was no longer covered due to that fact.
Also was contacted again by the Rep from ASUS Service Support to know if I got my email for the RMA. Once I explain that the card was sent and received in Markham, Ontario. The person emailed me back stating that it was being swapped out for another card.
All in all the experience has been very good.

Cons: -1 egg due to I had to foot the bill for shipping to ASUS. Thats my only issue with the warranty and the RMA Service.

Manufacturer Response:

Greetings Jim,

Thank you very much for updating your review. Although your display card ended up being defective, we are glad everything went as planned with the RMA process. Should you have any questions, please let me know through email. Thank you, and happy gaming! 3577186.
