2 out of 5 eggsBSOD issues. Would not recommend

Pros: If it ever works, it works well.

Cons: Bought two of these cards to place in a high-end ($4000) custom watercooling system, powered by a 1000W EVGA G2 PSU.

Everything installed without a hitch. Drivers installed were 14.12. However, almost immediately, there were issues.

Blue screening in games like Civ V, CS:GO. When placed through a benchmarking tool, the card BSOD'ed in the middle.

Then the real issues started. BSOD's on the desktop just seconds into boot. Random BSOD's on desktop and just light browsing. Attempted to reinstall 14.12 drivers by first uninstalling drivers, then running DDU cleaner. Upon reinstall of these drivers, BSOD's in the middle of driver installation, followed upon BSOD's upon entering Windows dekstop. Could only get my computer to boot in Safe Mode, when all Catalyst drivers were disabled.

Had to reinstall Windows, and only use one card. Seems like it's running more stable, but I'm how over $500 (2nd 290X + Watercooler).

Would not recommend to anyone. My plan now is to use the single card for another year, then upgrade to 2x 980X's when they fall in price more.

Never again Asus/AMD.

4 out of 5 eggsHad some problems in the beginning, sorted now.

Pros: Works as expected, gets favorable scores in benchmarks, runs games very well.

Cons: When I first got it and put it in my system, attempting to install drivers caused a black screen, even updating working drivers to newer ones caused this issue. The solution apparently was to use a 280 to install the newest drivers, then re-install the 290x, that seemed to fix it, even updates without issue now. Haven't had any problems other than when attempting to overclock, VRM 1 goes well out of my comfort zone with any nudge to the voltage or power limit. Probably an easy fix though, just needs it's thermal pad adjusted, unless it's just not on there. Not taking this thing apart until I'm comfortable with losing the warranty though.

Other Thoughts: Other than the initial issues and the VRM overheating issue, this is a solid card, I got it for $310 a few months ago and can't compain, though now I wish I'd spent a few extra dollars on the 970, simply because it gets better performance in the games I play.

1 out of 5 eggsThe worst Choice I made!!!

Pros: This card runs great when working, it doesn't make too much noise and I have been able to play the games that I like.

Cons: This Card keeps crashing on me, I will get black screens all the time the only fix for me is to reboot my computers witch sucks badly! and more less I will get a black screen within 1 minute or so.
The funny thing is that it only crashes on me while surfing the Internet or reading my emails, never while playing a game. I have sent it to ASUS for repair already. The same day I got it back after 30 seconds of my computer been on it crashed on me!!! I feel like I was ripped off my money. I don't know what to do anymore. I'm very mad cause I got it back in November and I have only used it for a couple of moths since I was waiting to get all my parts for this computer. "DO NOT BUY IT!" unless you want to trow your money away.

Other Thoughts: "DO NOT BUY!'"

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

We do value your time and effort in posting a review about our product. I want to apologize for any inconvenience this has caused you. I would like to personally assist you with this matter. Please try to uninstall your old display drivers and then install the latest display drivers. You can also try using the video card to other CPU, and see if it does the same issue. Please be advised that some of the symptoms may only appear when the computer is under a lot of stress like when you're playing a game. Usually the problem is software or hardware related but occasionally it's just a mechanical problem. Sometimes removing and then reseating the video card in its expansion slot or disconnecting and reconnecting auxiliary power cables can get it to start working properly. Please let me know how it goes. You can email me at customerloyalty@asus.com and place case # N150530741 in the subject line for a reference.

Best regards,
Manuel

4 out of 5 eggsUpdate

Pros: Powerful cards

Cons: Shipped with old bios
bios update tool is oriented for single card (non-select-able like other card mfg)

Other Thoughts: I wanted to make a correction on the status of PCIE3 @ x16. This IS doable. on the Sabertooth Gen3 mb, 1st & 3rd slots will have you running at full bore. This is NOT documented in the mb manual nor did a seasoned rep divulge this information. Combined with a samsung EVO 850 SSD, my system 3dmarks better then an i7-4770 w/gtx titan. Since both cards are now at x16, increased my rating 1 egg. I will not give full eggs due to the short sighted bios update utility.

2 out of 5 eggsHuge mess for me, not everyone..

Pros: Card has a high factory clock speed. The cooling unit should keep the card very cool even during intense use. Factory PCB, this can be a good thing but ins't always. 4GB of usable ram all at the same speed (no 970ish 4GB)

Cons: Not a fan of the ram. If a card has a HardOCP gold award it should have hynix ram at least. I found that this cards ram is iffy in terms of being stable.

Cooling unit has some issues. With the card I have, I had to RMA it 5 times and it is barely keeping it together but is stable if I only use the frivers that came with the GPU. Or the same version Catalyst driver from AMD.

Other Thoughts: The whole process of sending the card back so many times got annoying quick. The first week waas fine. I got everything to work. Then when the fron't fan died I RMA's it. After that I had to send it back 3 or 4 different times in a months time with no backup card except my trusty old 8800gtx. Now it works only in the stock drivers in win 7 and sometimes I have to manually crank the frank up to keep it from freezing up.

2 out of 5 eggsWorked for about 30 minutes...

Pros: Looks cool and is not very big compared to the others.

Cons: stopped working, and my 6-pin power connector on the gfx broke right off.

Other Thoughts: Cheaply made in my opinion.

2 out of 5 eggsUpdate

Pros: This is a good card when it worked. T_T

Cons: This card started to crash my system or games that i played. I tried under clocking the card and switch to quiet mode bios on the card, but nothing worked. Talked to Asus tech and RMA the card. 2 weeks later, the card came back the same.

Other Thoughts: Paid at least $20 for shipping. Asus support takes at least 24hrs to respond via email. No more Asus brand graphics card for me, and i should have stayed with Sapphire.

Manufacturer Response:

1 out of 5 eggsIf you want BSOD, get this

Pros: It has these neat stickers...

Cons: I built a machine last year
CPU - Intel Core i7-4770K
Motherboard - Asus Z87-Pro ATX LGA1150
RAM - Kingston HyperX 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600
HD C: - Kingston HyperX 3K 120GB 2.5" Solid State Drive
HD E: - Western Digital WD Blue WD10EZEX 1TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA

This year, in anticipation for if/when GTA ever gets released, I decided to throw in this:
Video Card - Asus Radeon R9 290X 4GB DirectCU II

BSOD three times now in the past month, random freezes.

I don't overclock, I don't water cool, I'm an average guy.

Other Thoughts: Why'd I buy this?

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Deuce,

In behalf of ASUS I want to thank you for your effort posting this review. I understand that the graphics card is freezing. I want to apologize as well for the inconvenience this issue have caused you. I know that your disappointed with the unit. It's unfortunate if you think the "Product" is a huge disappointment. 3 out of 5 eggsOld BIOS

Pros: Massive graphics power

Cons: BIOS is old
bios tools does not allow you to select the card ( crossfire)- see other thoughts
Beware AMD CPU owners! No PCIE3 @ x16/x16 - see other thoughts

Other Thoughts: I was so excited when I received these cards! Much to my disappointment, I can only get PCIE3 on one slot. AMD cpu do not do dual PCIE3. As for the vbios on the cards, the utility does not allow you to select the card. Since I have seen other GPU mfg have this function, knocking off 2 eggs since the process to pull these massive HEAVY cards in and out of my system flexed my Sabertooth Gen3 mb ( under warranty). As for the PCIE3, if your on an AMD CPU, you will only get PCIE3 x16/PCIE2 x16 from these cards at best in crossfire.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear RJM,

Thank you for your effort in posting this review. I understand that you have issue with the unit. I want to apologize for the inconvenience this issue have caused you. I know it's frustrating to be excited then at the end it's disappointment since you can't use it. It happened to me as well when I purchased a laptop.
