1 out of 5 eggsBe very wary

Pros: When i could make it work it was great.

Cons: Problem with the bios causing it to black screen when it hit a certain heat point (never broke 50 degrees c on a chip rated for 95). Increasing fan speed helped by increasing run time by half and instead of black screening it windowed the game into a useless window. "GPU Tweak" wouldn't update so couldn't mess with the vbios.

Other Thoughts: I will grant that part of my issue was with a faulty component in the card, causing it to cause red screen when un-powered for awhile. Everything else is what people complain about. But my experience with this was completely ridiculous.

Manufacturer Response:

1 out of 5 eggsHorrible experience with this.

Pros: 1) Fast when it works.
2) Looks nice.

Cons: 1) Black screens constantly & some games will force PC to completely turn off like a switch was tripped.
2) Can get a bit on the hot side.
3) Lousy customer service from Asus.
4) $579.00 paperweight.

Other Thoughts: Pre-ordered the card in March, shipped in April.
During the middle of summer, card started black-screening and switching off to the point where it was unusable. Never overclocked, ran stock the entire time. Tried different drivers & bios.
Sent my first card in for RMA and got the same one back with nothing done to it and nothing explained as to why.
Contacted Asus again and they sent me an "advanced replacement" and put a hold on my credit card. The second card happened to be a used card with a defective HDMI port right from the get-go.
Sent the second card back and Asus emailed me asking why, I informed them it had a defective HDMI port and my old card at least turned on. This time around it was a different agent corresponding with me and said they could not help with the original RMA unless re-opening the RMA again and sending me another used card back to me. What a joke.

These cards WILL NOT function correctly without using software such as MSI afterburner to drop the factory overclock down to normal 290X frequencies. If this is not done the card will black screen randomly, usually not even while gaming. This is the only way I have gotten the card somewhat stable. It will sometimes shut the entire PC down at times when playing certain games like COD.

I do not recommend this card to anyone, spend a bit more and get an NVIDIA based Geforce card and save yourself the headache.

I spent $579 on a card that is now not even selling well at $299.99 with rebate. I feel I was ripped off and Asus customer service was no help. I asked over and over to trade the card in for something else and was told that "they cannot do that".

They are only willing to send the same card or a used card back to you if you are experiencing problems.

I have been buying Asus products since 1999 and this fiasco is the reason why I may be switching.

Thanks Asus!

5 out of 5 eggs7 month update

Pros: Fast & Powerful

Cons: The outside edge fan tends to get a bit noisy at long term high rpms as if its slightly out of balance but not so bad its a problem - this is the standard fan of the 2. If both fans were the new hi tech design I think that would be better. However they still push plenty of air.

Other Thoughts: This is an update to my earlier review. My 2 cards run with no problems in cossfire & have not needed to over clock over factory settings. Gets high frame rates in every game so far. One thing I did was swap out the Asus Sabertooth R2 MB I had bought earlier for the Asus ROG Crosshair Formula Z MB & this seems to have corrected my Frame rate expectations. In BF4 under ultra settings I will tap 200FPS often & average around 140FPS depending on the game server. If I keep the room cool 75deg F they hang around 65deg C under heavy load. Running currently on AMD 8350 @ 4.5ghz & 32gb of 1866 ram. I may even pick up a 3rd card now that the prices have dropped.

3 out of 5 eggsDisappointed but hopeful.

Pros: Very fast, quiet, and cool compared to what you see other 290Xs run at. Pricey at release, but I was originally happy with my purchase.

Cons: The last several months I've been struggling with many crashing issues as many others have mentioned, BSOD (blue/black) no errors in event viewer, inexplicably happen at infrequent intervals. Stress tested the card for 16+ hours, but wasn't able to get the computer to crash so assumed it wasn't the card. Purchased a second ASUS 290X along with all new computer hardware in hopes of solving the issue. Continued to have the crashing problems with both cards in CFX. Removed the older card and since running the new card solo I haven't had any issues, so I'm RMAing the original card in hopes to get it replaced. Would give more Eggs if I didn't have to RMA.

Other Thoughts: This is the first ASUS product I've ever had to RMA. My Roommate has also purchased two of these cards, at same time I did respectively. He has not had any issues with his cards so I'm hopeful.

3 out of 5 eggsGreat card but lacking in integrity.

Pros: Will still out perform the GTX 980 in favored titles. At least on the games and comparisons I've done. Stability when the card isn't acting buggy.

Cons: Horizontal lines flash upon my screen at idle and during gaming on occasions. I've gotten some blue screening at higher temps but never oc'd above stock.

Other Thoughts: I paid $550 dollar plus for this card. I honestly expected better stability from a non-reference card. Now I feel like I've been shammed a bit. Might try to rma soon through newegg if they can help me with my 1 year warranty.

4 out of 5 eggsThe BMW of 290X cards

Pros: A work of art and a thing of beauty. Custom design and it shows. Backplate

Cons: As with all 290X cards, overclocking can cause issues. I bumped up the memory and core and experienced the "black screen" issue. Went back to stock clocks and the issue hasn't repeated and it's been a few months.

Other Thoughts: Look we've been spoiled by massive overclocks... thing is, the 290X just can't do that out of the box. Run the card at reference specs and enjoy without headache. I mean, these cards were $600+ not six months ago....

1 out of 5 eggsUpdated review

Pros: - card is fast if you are lucky to get one that works

Cons: - Appears to be very unstalbe

Other Thoughts: I bought two of these cards for my crossfire set-up.

The first pair had some serious issues with artifacts in games so I had to RMA them for a new pair. The second time I received them, one card was dead on arrival, so I had to RMA that one to get a new one.

They worked fine until recently, I would get random screen freeze with no event / BSOD logged in windows event viewer. I thought it was a bad card, so I swapped the cards to make my second card the primary adapter. Now the screen freeze problem seems to have gone away, but I run into daily "display driver has stopped responding and has recovered" error that sometimes is accompanied by screen artifacts and/or BSOD.

2 out of 5 eggsDo not buy

Pros: It is an attractive card, I like the direct cu ll cooler and the back plate.

Cons: I can not get it to run the slowest games on the lowest settings without crashing.

Other Thoughts: It has been many years since I have owned an ati card and I thought I would give them another try. I replaced my 660ti sli setup. I bought two of these to run in crossfire. I was lucky and bought one of these cards from a local retailer and was able to return it. If your going to roll the dice on one of the amd cards I would highly recommend you buy it from a store that has a real return policy.

1 out of 5 eggsDisappointed.

Pros: Great for Gaming.

Cons: Computer locks up when trying to exit any game. And random locks up during games but less frequent. Sometimes alt-tab causing the computer to black screen and lock up also. Read a lot of complaints about this. I thought they had it fixed by now.

Other Thoughts: Would not recommend until they get the freezing/black screen issues fixed.

Manufacturer Response:

1 out of 5 eggsunreliable

Pros: Very powerful card (when its working)

Cons: It is unreliable. I had to send it to warranty for repairs.(bsod)

After it came back, the HDMI port did not work.

Asus did not want to acknowledge warranty stating (the card had been benched for several ammount of hours with no problems) completely ignoring the fact that I was not complaining about the card overheating or underperforming , i was complaining about the HDMI PORT NOT WORKKING.

After much frustration, i ended up buying an active display port and ignoring my hdmi port (since i use triple monitors on dvi)

After a couple of months, the card now randomly does not want to display video on some ports. (dvi)

Overall I would not recommend asus video cards to anyone, they are poorly built and very low quality.

The worst part about asus is not the build quality. its the customer support.

I had initially reviewed this card positive, since I was amazed at the graphical power of it, but after almost a year of ownership I had to comeback and write my thoughts

Other Thoughts: dont buy.

Manufacturer Response:
