Ultimate Cooling

DirectCU II with SSU Architecture

20% Cooler, 3X Quieter
ASUS graphics card engineering leads the industry once again with the introduction of DirectCU II SSU thermal design. Comprising two "S" shapes and one "U" shape, the new heatpipes are precision crafted for optimal efficiency and heat transference. They are also nickel-plated to minimize oxidization, with their mid-section now placed directly over the GPU die. This design shortens heat transfer travel to lower thermal resistance and create bi-directional flow for up to twice the cooling capacity in the same space as that required by existing graphics card cooler designs. High-conductivity copper used in heatpipe formulation creates tube-like vapor chambers, moving heat to a large aluminum heatsink that features extended fins for multiple points of dissipation. The assembly is further chilled by two high performance but carefully-tuned and sound-dampened fans for faster and quieter cooling.

Ultimate Stability

DIGI+ VRM with Super Alloy Power

30% less power noise and 2.5X greater durability
Acclaimed DIGI+ VRM has been applied via a 8-phase power design that uses digital voltage regulators to minimize power noise by 30%, enhance power efficiency by 15%, widen voltage modulation tolerance, and improve overall stability and longevity by 2.5 times over reference.

2 out of 5 eggsImpressive... While it lasted.

Pros: -Impressive rendering quality and speed.

-Twin fans and a heatsink that covers *most* of the card keep temperatures relatively cool.

Cons: -Horrible customer service from ASUS; be prepared to fight if your card fails. They will try not to honor the listed 3-year warranty.

- VRAM is...unstable. Whether it is poorly positioned and is absorbing too much heat or is not covered by the heatsink, I'm not sure, but it gets very hot.

-Massive card. Pictures do not do it justice. Do no purchase this card unless you have a large case. THIS WILL NOT FIT IN CASES MID-TOWER AND SMALLER!

Card failed after about a year of use, research and testing determined that the VRAM module on the card was far outside the accepted thermal limits, most likely from a faulty or poorly designed heatsink. IR thermometer picked up temperatures in excess of 120 C. ASUS customer support is nightmarish to work with. They have fought me every step of the way to get this replaced, despite the listed 3 year warranty.

Other Thoughts: I remember from years ago ASUS was my go-to for anything video card related. I never used to have these problems with them. And while the card itself is impressive, the lack of reliability is not. Overall, I would not purchase this again, and would have to put some serious thought into getting another product manufactured by ASUS.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Jason,

Thank you for your time on posting this review, we are sorry to hear your experience with the ASUS graphics card. On behalf of ASUS we apologize for any inconvenience this issue has caused you.

Please allow me to assist you. First can I have the units serial number for me to check and verify its warranty and in case we need to process an RMA or do you have a case number that I can use to review your record? please try the steps below to troubleshoot the graphics cards problem.

1. Check whether your GPU Fans are working/at full load or not
2. Check any other devices on the mobo blocking the airways of the GPU (It might be poor cooling system) or use other PCIe slot for the GPU
3. If fan is not spinning or dusty, take the card out of the system and clean it by giving it a good air blow out or applying enough thermal paste.

For further assistance or if you want to discuss this matter with me, please email me at and put case #N151152775 in the subject line for a reference. I'm here to help you and all others with these issues, as our customer loyalty department dedicated to bringing a resolution to all issues related to our products.

Pros: Purchased over a year ago, and the card still works well for all the latest games. Doesn't run particularly hot either.

2 out of 5 eggsRevised review

Pros: Good for gaming

Cons: Awful for desktop use, the screen flicker issue i mentioned in my previous review has just gotten worse over time to the point that the thing is beyond unusable for just straight desktop mode.

I've read that ASUS is the only manufacturer that hasn't released an update for the VGA bios that fixes this issue while all other manufacturers like Sapphire and XFX have.

I would RMA it but I'm past the 30 day mark so I essentially have a pretty brick.

3 out of 5 eggsGreat, except for the manufacturer

Pros: AMD did a fantastic job with the Radeon R9 family of cards! This card is handling our video rendering for our church's live video streaming flawlessly.

Cons: Asus has become a terrible company. After having multiple bad experiences with their RMA and tech departments and swearing never to purchase their products again, I made an exception with this card only to have issues with their rebate center. They sent me the clear copy of my NewEgg receipt back to me and stated the rebate was declined because of an unclear receipt. WHAT?!?!?!

Other Thoughts: AMD and Radeon = 5 Eggs
Asus = Moldy Butter

There are other manufacturers, buy from them.

5 out of 5 eggsasus r9270x 4gb

Pros: quiet and powerful, broke it in with advanced warfare for a couple hours at high settings, never heard the fans go high and was putting out 95fps. This card rocks!!! nice work Asus!...

Cons: None....big but expected that

Other Thoughts: if you have a window case it looks awesome with the heat pipes, looks like the card has headers!!

4 out of 5 eggsreally fast, minor issue

Pros: Golly gee willickers... this thing is quick. Handles every game 60fps
With a 4690 cpu it runs gtav on all high settings at 60 fps.

Cons: I have this minor screen flicker every now again, its just slightly annoying. I tried reseating it in the pci slot a couple of times didnt seem to fix it. so I'm not sure what is causing it.

5 out of 5 eggsAsus R9270X-DC2T-4GD Radeon R9 270X

Pros: Blown away the first time I put settings at max levels on my favorite game. Purchased for multiple screens connections. I multibox WOW on 5 screen and it takes it no problem. Never was able to stress it until it blew off on me after 3 days of use.

Cons: Died on me after 3 days. I figure I hit a bad one. It happens. It's huge, like so many says, do your homework before you buy to see if it fits in your box.

Other Thoughts: Was truly amazed on Newegg service on the RMA and replacement already on its way after only 5 days.

5 out of 5 eggsStrong 1080p performance for the money

Pros: - Strong 1080p performance.
- 4GB Memory is more than enough for most games and more.
- A propor 256 bit bus. Come on, Nvidia...
- Easily overclockable to <5% on memory and core clock. I've seem temps above 60c and it's stable.
- Runs cool with no alterations, including thermal paste, at a 26c idle (OC).
- Doesn't seem noisy.
- 2 big fans + large heatsink.

Cons: - Whine: AMD CCC (catalyst control center) is a little underwhelming. Also, I've experienced low fan speeds (~20%) that were letting the temps get a little high. I manually control the fan speed now (~50%). This might have been from using CCC to overclock; it seemed to have poor control over the fans on auto. Catalyst 14.12 doesn't seem to report power info.

- only 1 HDMI port.

- It's a big card, you know the drill. Check that case.

Other Thoughts: Price to performance ratio is hard to beat. Dual Slot, large, and fairly heavy. I would recommend to any budget minded enthusiast. Crossfire is probably great.
