An update to my previous review.
- Pros: Excellent performance in a variety of games. Efficient single-slot HSF with slick-looking decal (even the box is cool). WinFox II is a pratical utility with tons of features (including overclocking). Inexpensive compared to other GeForce 8800 GT boards.
- Cons: Some features don't work in WinFox II. Card still runs hot on occasion.
- Other Thoughts: This is an update to my previous review. I've had the chance to play some games with this card and its performance is definitely on point. Crysis, Titan Quest, and Gears of War run smooth as butter even under DX10 with settings pushed to the max. One complaint is the Tea Break feature in Winfox; it's supposed to alert you when to take a break after extended periods of computing but it doesn't. Since this is a minor quibble it's not a deal breaker just an observation.
That aside I'd recommend this card to anyone looking for a solid yet inexpensive 8800 GT card. Leadtek has been around for 22 years and has been reliable parts for many years. I'm lovin' this video card!.
Great Video Card
- Pros: To start, I have been buying Leadtek cards since 2001 starting with a Geforce 2 Pro. I have never run into a problem with any of my Leadtek cards. As for the 8800GT, it's a great card and has performed as anyone would expect it would. I actually have purchased 2 of these for SLI and they perform flawlessly.
- Cons: Others have spoken of these cards running really warm/hot. I actually agree, even with the better non-reference cooler. For those of you who have purchased this card or those of you who intend to purchase this card, I would recommend re-pasting the cooler to the GPU. Of the two cards I received, I RMA'd one because it was running a consistent avg. of 13-15 degrees hotter than the other. Before I sent it back, I wanted to see the factory pasting (as one of my computer techs made a remark that Leadtek uses cheap paste). Sure enough, the one that was running hotter had cheapo white paste that was overused (and abused if I might say) while the cooler card had proper silver paste that was applied professionally.
Also, make sure you adjust your fan speeds manually as 30% (stock speed and non-self adjusting) won't cut it for long durations of gaming.
- Other Thoughts: Other than checking the silver pasting, the cards perform great. I am happy with the performance and would recommend this to a friend.
Heat issues!
- Pros: The processer has a heavy overclock (80MHz) which is really amazing in my opinion for any overclock. It can run COD4 on max settings, all Source engine games on max settings, and Crysis on med/high settings with minimal hickups.
- Cons: This card runs VERY hot. There is actually an issue with heat detection with the firmware on the card (or so I've read). This can result in your card overheating and crashing your computer, or getting very strange texture errors. Your best solution to this problem is to download a fan adjustment program.
- Other Thoughts: If you're looking for a good mid-range card that can run most games, buy this card. You just have to keep in mind that the card is very prone to overheating. Also, don't attempt to overclock this card! You can only overclock it by about 10-20 MHz stable, so it doesn't make a difference.
