Good Value
- Pros: PERFORMANCE B+
-Doller per performance makes this card a reasonable choice. -One card is capable of running multiple monitors @ 1280 X 1024 with DVD's playing on one and any of today's latest games on the other. -No problems with overheating or dramatic changes in FPS were found.
- Cons: COMPATABILITY C
-I found a compatabiliy issue with Vista 64 Ultimate that required me to reinstall and start over with an older driver. The default GUI called "Catalyst" was unable to remove the current driver and also unable to install a previous version of the same driver.
AWESOME CARD!
- Pros: Tears up every game with no problems! Running with a 2.3GHZ Phenom, ES MOBO, 4GB RAM, 600W PS, Xclio A380 case, Vista 32 bit OS, connected to a 1080P LCD HDTV (Toshiba Regza) via HDMI.
- Cons: NONE!
- Other Thoughts: This card simply blazes! Prior to doing ANYTHING, I updated the drivers (Catalyst Control Center...or CCC). There is currently nothing...at ALL...wrong with this card or its drivers (Forget about past complaints)! CCC allowed me to set up profiles...I use one for gaming and one standard. I LOVE the "Auto Tune" and "Hotkey" functions in the overdrive tab. Autotune maximizes your card's clocks FOR you with the click of one button, and the hotkey allows you to activate your profiles on the fly, without ever even opening up CCC. For instance, I press CNTRL/ALT/G for my gaming profile (Fan jumps to life instantly), and when I'm done, I hit CNTRL/ALT/S for standard system settings. At 30% fan speed (fairly quiet) it rarely gets too far above 40C on standard settings. For gaming, the clocks are overdriven, and the fan is set to 65% (noise increases)...but it doesn't get over 52C. LOVE THIS CARD!!! Played the heck out of Left4Dead all weekend, fully maxxed out in 1080P! Git some!!
Gigabyte HD 4870 1GB
- Pros: This is a great card! It is powerful enough to run even the most demanding games. 60+ FPS in Fallout 3 at Ultra High w/ AAx8/AFx15 @ 1920x1200. Can even handle Crysis Warhead (w/ a custom mod) with AAx2 and still get about 30-35 FPS. This card also has amazing Blu-Ray playback. Clear, clean picture. Every game I've ran with this card (with the exception of Crysis) can be completely maxed out on all fronts and still have amazing frame rate. At this price, I recommend buying two and have a nice, beasty CrossfireX gaming experience. This card is a must have, and really shows that ATI is still in the game.
- Cons: This card runs really hot. (70°C+) However, there is a solution for that. (see other thoughts) Other than that, none whatsoever.
- Other Thoughts: As for the GPU heating problem, the ATI Catalyst Control Center is a very capable solution for cooling this card. under the Advanced view option, in the ATI Overdrive selection, you can manually tweak the fan speeds on the card. Setting it on 35-40% brings the temps down considerably, to around 38-45°C when idle, and about 55-65°C under load. (Riva Tuner is also an option, but isn't always as stable as the Catalyst Center, especially on Vista rigs.) You can also overclock the core clock and memory clock speeds through the CCC, which improves gaming quite a bit.
