5 out of 5 eggsWorks great with tweaking

Pros: Fast especally at the time performs well as long as your other parts are up to snuff thats a given.
high quality heatsink
pretty stable

Cons: One option to solve the heat issue about the card is to remove the thermal paste that came on the chip put a new smear on it obviously using some quality thermal paste.

Artic Silver type. I noticed on mine like others that tempatures were real high it caused tearing in game crashing was idleing at 70c under load could go up to 90c.
once i re did the thermal paste application no issues after that.

idle stays around 40-50c load doesnt get above 70c hovers aorund 60- low 60's under laod on average.

Other Thoughts: I know this review is late I wanted to get it done for my own sake and might be helpful later.
It's not the heasking causing the heat issues on these cards it's the thermal paste at least for alot of these that's causing the issue.

3 out of 5 eggsDisappointed

Pros: Good performance.

Cons: Very loud. The fan can't be controlled by software, so you have to buy an external fan controller. This fan is easily the loudest in my case. Very annoying. AND on top of that, the card runs very hot. What's the point of having such a loud fan if its not even going to do a good job cooling the video card?

5 out of 5 eggsGood Card

Pros: Ran just fine with stock cooling. Due to an unfortunate bounce when I had my case open and PC running, the stock fan broke. (I have a small case and had poor ventilation at the time.) Ran around 50C idle and 70C under load. These were similar temps to my 8800 GTS 320MB and are considered acceptable by anyone who knows stock coolers. I replaced the Heat sink with some $40 aftermarket and my temps never reach 50C even under heavy sustained loads. When I replaced the HS I also improved the airflow of the case so this may help with my load temperatures.

Cons: Other reviewers saying they have a high tech level when they obviously do not.

John, it's you're own fault for not keeping your bios up to date. It's like installing Windows and never updating. A stupid lack of maintenance.

Others: Don't rate a something down because you can't push it harder than advertised. Its only guaranteed to go the speeds its shipped with.

Other Thoughts: I didn't send in the rebate because I have had nasty experiences with the rebate companies and returning cards that no longer have a proof of purchase. I prefer to return things to newegg so that I can get manufacturers product when I RMA.

I'm considering getting a second one for crossfire but I'm unsure with DX11 models being released.

I would have RMA'd because of the fan break but my ethics got the better of me.

5 out of 5 eggsgot got my rebate finally.

Pros: Handles every game just fine.
HDMI port
Display port
low price great value.

Cons: no memory heat sinks.
no fan speed control
only so so temps with stock heat sink.
Even tho there are three display outputs it can only use two at a time.

Other Thoughts: I just received my rebate, it only took 5 months. I replaced the stock fan with a ARCTIC COOLING ACCELS1 Rev 2. it cools my card so much better. Idle temps were in the 50's, now with the AC accels it idles at 37. I may get another card so i can have four monitors instead of just two.

1 out of 5 eggs***Warning to all potential buyers!***

Pros: It worked when I had it. Now it doesn't work anymore. They provided me with a solution to crossfire problems.

Cons: The memory is hot on it and has no cooling, if you try to even edge the gpu pass the default 750mhz it will crash! This is unacceptable! To get crossfire working I had to talk to tech support and run a number of tests. The default bios that comes with it DOES NOT WORK WITH CROSSFIRE! You must update your bios to the newest bios available on their website. The drivers on the CD is the only driver that works with crossfire if you decide to crossfire two of these cards. When you use newer Catalyst drivers, you will not be able to get these cards to crossfire without first updating the bios. They do not tell you this, I had to find out the hard way why the cards will not crossfire at all. They did not make a working crossfire bios until I kept providing them information of why it wasn't working. It wasn't until that they admitted that crossfire doesn't work and provided me with an updated bios. My crossfire ended up being disabled so I checked my second card. Yes, it was dead....

Other Thoughts: After 4 months, this videocard died. I don't recommend this brand in the future if you decide to buy videocards. At first I had tried to crossfire it with my XFX 4890 1GB to only find out crossfire doesn't work. It wasn't my XFX 4890 all along, it was the Gigabyte 4870 1GB with the bad bios that was causing problems with crossfire. Don't be fooled by the Zalman fan, it doesn't keep this card cool enough to save its life. There is no options in Catalys Control Center to control the fan speed, so there is no sensor on the fan to control speed. There are no heatsinks for the memory either, tell me why all other 4870 Radeon series has heatsinks on their memory except Gigabyte? That's right, because build quality for this card is abysmal and lacking in the quality department. My first card is only surviving because I have a full waterblock on it. Just do a Google search for this card and you will find it's plagued with all sorts of problems.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat video, runs hot

Pros: Loved playing games with all features enabled at 1920x1080. Older games, no problems, looks fantastic.

Cons: Latest game (Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena) overheats within 2 minutes, had to add a 120mm fan to blow on it as well (didn't want to go to water cooling) and works fine after that.

Other Thoughts: Crashes randomly if unattended, very rarely during game play so I can live with it. Still working my way through all the updates.

5 out of 5 eggsGood price point

Pros: Good speeds, runs any modern game mostly maxxed. Drivers are available, and improve performance as you get new ones.

Cons: Fan is loud, but not unbearably so. Card is long, power slots are at the end (facing horizontally), which make cabling the space a little harder. Would rather have them on top.

Other Thoughts: Probably couldn't run crossfire without heating problems, just one runs hot.

5 out of 5 eggstrade up 3870

Pros: bought a 3870 from gigabyte a couple of years ago which has been flawless. decided it was time evolve into the 4870

Cons: about to click on buy until i noticed the rebate was another worldwiderebate scam.

Other Thoughts: guess im going to have to wait until the card is on sale without the rebate

5 out of 5 eggsGood Card/Long Rebate

Pros: This is an update to a previous review I wrote a few months ago. This card is great! Less expensive than other 1GB 4870 cards, Zalman cooler, can handle anything I play at max settings without problems.

Cons: 1. Size, which I knew when buying it. Card is so long and so wide that it cuts my CoolerMaster Centurion 5 almost in half.
2. Power hookups; requires two PCI-E connectors. Comes with an adapter, but make sure your PSU has enough spare plugs.
3. Rebate (see below)

Other Thoughts: The rebate processing "confirmed" receipt of my rebate application (the actual form w/barcode, not my online registration) quickly after I sent it in. It took 10 weeks for them to "process" my application. They then emailed me saying I would receive my rebate check in 8-10 weeks. TWENTY WEEKS FOR A REBATE IS OUTRAGEOUS!
