Based on the fast and power-efficient NVIDIA Kepler architecture, the GIGABYTE GV-N640D5-1GL delivers game-changing performance for strikingly beautiful graphics and realistic environmental interaction. Performance is only a part of the story. GIGABYTE's OC GURU ll utility puts you in the driver's seat to take full control of critical parameters. Ultra Durable 2 design adopts first-class components, including Ferrite Core Chokes, Low RDS (on) MOSFET, and Lower ESR Solid Capacitors, for unmatched stability and durability during demanding conditions. In the meantime, the GIGABYTE GV-N640D5-1GL gets ultra-smooth gaming with NVIDIA gaming innovations like FXAA and Adaptive Vertical Sync. It dynamically adjusts vertical sync based on the current frame rates for maximum playability.

  • newegg Ultra Durable 2 Using high-quality components on graphics cards is the key factor for having a long lasting, stable, and reliable product. GIGABYTE is again setting a new standard by using Ferrite Core Chokes, Low RDS (on) MOSFET, and Lower ESR Solid Capacitors, providing the stability and reliability from their high-end graphics solution. In addition, the GIGABYTE Ultra Durable 2 Edition graphics cards now feature a sophisticated layout topology. This state-of-the-art power design from GIGABYTE delivers the ideal integration of thermal, electric characteristics, digital signals, power circuitry, and optimum placement of components for enhanced graphics performance.
  • newegg Gold-Plated HDMI Durable, gold-plated, large contact area connectors have been used for optimum signal transfer between connections.
  • newegg OC GURU ll OC GURU ll offers a brand-new instinctive user interface, making it easier to monitor and adjust all important settings. Users can set up MONITORING, GPU CLOCK, MEMORY CLOCK, FAN, GPU VOLTAGE, Memory VOLTAGE, OSD, ONLINE SUPPORT and update driver, BIOS directly.
  • newegg Kepler GPU Architecture NVIDIA's Kepler GPU architecture has been designed from the ground up not just for maximum performance, but also for optimal performance per watt. The new SMX streaming multiprocessor is twice as efficient as the prior generation, and the new geometry engine draws triangles twice as fast. The result is world-class performance and the highest image quality in an elegant, power-efficient graphics card.
  • newegg NVIDIA Adaptive Vertical Sync Nothing is more distracting than framerate stuttering and screen tearing. The first tends to occur when framerates are low, the second when framerates are high. Adaptive V-Sync is a smarter way to render frames. At high framerates, V-sync is enabled to eliminate tearing; at low framerates, it's disabled to minimize stuttering. It gets rid of distractions so you can get on with gaming.
  • newegg New Anti-Aliasing Mode: FXAA Anti-aliasing smoothes out jagged edges but can be demanding on framerates. FXAA is a new anti-aliasing technology that produces beautiful smooth lines with minimal performance impact. And with Kepler based GPUs, you can enable FXAA in hundreds of game titles through the NVIDIA Control Panel.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Card

Pros: Nice card to fit into a small budget like mine.
It handles Hawken and a few of the other games I wanted to try out just fine. I like it. My hearing is still fine ;-)

Cons: None.

2 out of 5 eggsGood chip, fan is too loud for HTPC use

Pros: I needed to upgrade my existing discrete HTPC card for a bit more ability with the latest codecs. This chip looks to be a great use for that.

Great that we finally have some decent low profile cards to choose from.

Nice that it's a true single slot cooler, but that also leads to the Cons below.

Cons: The cooler fan is much too loud for HTPC use. Even when under moderate load it's very audible. Even the wife notices which is bad.

I've tried a number of the software tools to quiet the fan and they do work to an extent at the high end, but then make the low RPM speed even higher than default. So you end up with less noise on the high end and more noise on the low end.

In the end this card is not going to stay in this machine. I may try and pull a dual fan setup from an older nVidia low profile card and replace this one. At least the noise from that fan is tolerable.

1 out of 5 eggsFan makes loud noise

Pros: It worked well while it lasted.

Cons: The fan began making an awful loud noise after only two months of use. And now I doubt newegg will want to replace it so I will have to deal with Gigabyte.

Other Thoughts: I always buy Gigabyte products for the quality but this time they let me down. I hope it doesn't become a trend or I will have to go back to Asus.

2 out of 5 eggsBad HDMI port position

Pros: Good hardware specs. Includes brackets.

Cons: The HDMI port is too close to the top edge of the card and I wasn't able to properly connect any of my HDMI cables.

Other Thoughts: Bought this for my HTPC/NAS.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat!

Pros: Faster GDDR5 memory instead of DDR3 on most GT640 cards (40 GB/sec vs 28.5 GB/sec). Quiet operation. Low power; requires only a 300W power supply. Easy, straight-forward installation.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I purchased this card to replace the Intel integrated video card that came in my Dell 660 desktop. I have a 24" Ultrasharp LED 1920 x 1200 resolution monitor. This card really enhanced the performance of my monitor. The video quality it delivers is awesome! (Note: I do not game; this PC is used primarily for running business applications.)

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Little Cruncher

Pros: Low profile brackets ARE INCLUDED in the box, though the description doesn't mention it.
Runs cool and quiet.
Faster than other GT 640s
49W TDP
Does not require power to be plugged in.
Great card for filling in empty PCIe slots.
A true single-slot GPU - the heatsink/fan assembly all occupy only 1 slot and do not encroach into neighboring slots, preventing their use.

Cons: They don't come in 4-packs...

SETI.USA, BOINC's largest American-based team (though we recruit internationally), and one of America's largest consumer GPU purchasers receives no membership discount :(

Other Thoughts: It should be noted this is a GT 640 Rev. 2, which is a faster, more power efficient GPU compared to the other GT 640s. The easiest way to tell if you're looking at a Rev2 or not is the base clock will be at least 1046MHz.

I used this GPU for number crunching, not graphics. Sorry :p But if you're into F@H or BOINC, you may like to know at stock speed this card will get you about 104k credits/day on DistrRTgen or Primegrid's PPS Sieve and run around 58C. These GT 640 Rev2 GPUs crunch ~9% faster than the regular 640s and use less electricity to do it: 49W TDP vs. 65W on the older 640s.

This GPU is fully powered by your motherboard, meaning it requires no additional plugs from your power supply. Low profile brackets are included to fit into slim cases.
