1 out of 5 eggsDont buy this card

Pros: i don't know, i didn't get to play any video games or do any kinds of tests. it looks kinda cool i suppose.

Cons: The first card i purchased didn't work, it was rev. 1.0. So i had to RMA it. The replacement card i got was also rev. 1.0 and i suspect that is was used, also not working. nice

Other Thoughts: the newegg customer service was really nice and helpful in replacing the card and ultimately refunding my money. It's really not there fault that the card doesn't work. I'm happy with my RMA experience but not the product. I will be shopping at newegg again in the future.

4 out of 5 eggsGood.

Pros: It's a 290.
It's AMD.
It's Radeon.
it is literally the same speed as any other 290.
it has a nice warranty.
it's gigabyte, RELIABLE.

Cons: It's idle temps, it even warmer than my current stock cooler 290X.
this card idles @ 64C, BUT!
it has never went about 77C, even at a stress test after 1 hour of almost 100% use. so it sacrifices Idle temps, but is stable. which is a good thing, but not if you are not using it to it's full potential.
the fans, and fan mount @ 100% actually make the card vibrate. the plastic Support braces are flimsy, and the actual fan/fins, are very brittle.
i have seen gigabyte do this with AMD for 2 years now, and would like to see Gigabyte put effort into some of their AMD engineering.
Gigabyte has never went with anything truly stunning. this card is exactly what you would expect from a triple fan designed Inferno chip.
I hope someone from GB see's this because i truly love your company. but this fan and thermal design has been the same for years with AMD, how about that windforce fans you have on Nvidia has on there new gpu's?

Other Thoughts: gigabyte has a great RMA service despite some thinking otherwise, my experience has always been swift with them.

4 out of 5 eggsVery good-get the Tri-X if possible

Pros: -Runs fast (Hawaii+4GB)
-Excellent Performance/Price
-Cooler significantly better than stock R9 290
-Overclocks decently

Cons: -Power Consumption (Especially when OC'ed)
-Cooler is good; NOT 450 WATTS
-Elpida Memory
-Sapphire Tri-X OC is arguably the better GPU, especially when at same price point.

Other Thoughts: I purchased this card in June 2014 (Just after the Bitcoin Rush of mid '14) for $379.99. Now that prices had dropped significantly to ~$280, this card easily destroys any other cards at the price point (GTX 770). However, when put against other R9 290s, this card is not at the top.

Although this card is currently under-water, I did spend some time with the stock cooler. The card runs at 1040mhz core and 1250mhz memory clocks, with elpida memory. Apparently, there are some significant differences between Hynix and Elpida VRAM, it is mainly a luck of the draw. Anyhow, without any external cooling, the card is honestly an under performing overclocker. It can be quite difficult to get over 1100mhz core clock without experiencing temperatures above 88C. Even worse, the VRMs run rather hot. Although the VRMs are supposedly rated to 120C, I did feel nervous seeing them spike to over 100C.

After adding 2 delta fans directly under the GPU [Glued to PSU], there was a significant decrease in temperatures.(~75C or -35C difference). I was further able to increase the core clock to1130mhz and memory clock to 1400mhz, and still had VRMs under 85C and core under 80C. When benchmarking, I set the GPU to:
1180mhz core, 1400mhz mem,+100mV offset and +50% power limit.

Although the windforce cooler may be sufficient, I would strongly recommend getting the Sapphire Tri-X OC R9 290 if within $300, or even better full block water cooling (universal waterblock will leave the VRMs running VERY hot, even with copper heatsinks).

Moving on, the R9 290 as expected uses a lot of power. One can expect ~270watt power usage at stock, and when overclocked to 1180/1400, I recorded ~380watts. All of this however is not really relevant, as even in 2X crossfire, a 1050 watt PSU (Seasonic X-1050) offers a lot of headroom.

The R9 290 offers performance slightly higher than expected from a typical R9 290. At stock, Ungine Heaven (1920x1080 8XAA Extreme Tess.) runs ~1350, and when OC'd scored ~1490~1510. Nearly every game can run smoothly, especially at 1080p, however if running at 4K resolution, a second GPU is favorable to get decent FPS without turning down settings. The 4GB VRAM also comes in handy, and offers an advantage over other NVIDIA offerings.

Overall, the Windforce R9 290 is a vast improvement from the stock R9 290, however, there are better alternatives.

5 out of 5 eggsA beast

Pros: -Plays everything on ultra with very high frame rates.
-This card is a beast and should last me for awhile.

Cons: -None

Other Thoughts: I bought this card for a new gaming build and I have not been disappointed. It plays all the games I throw at it on ultra settings without a problem. I am currently playing Shadow of Mordor with the Ultra pack. The specs for the Ultra pack say it requires 6GB VRAM. This card has 4GB and I still average over 70 FPS.

1 out of 5 eggsNot worth it...good til heat takes over then its sweat city!!!

Pros: Can heat the House with it in the winter..or cook some eggs.

Cons: I wrote a review but didn't see it so didn't know if it went through but anyway...STAY AWAY!!!! Cards are insanly hot i got 2 of these about a month apart for crossfire. i have 7 fans on my case first card ran pretty warm thought nothing of it its a gigabyte ya know thought the new cooler would help it from the horror stories and when i got the second card WOW was it even hotter the HEAT from these things i can warm my whole house with it in the winter time and thats not a joke...The vrm on these things hit about 100c or more I also tried DOWN Clocking but why would you want to do that if i bought the OC ones, and the core 95c or more...tried water cooling still hit high temps. Tried opening my case with a Mini fan right next to it and STILL high temps.Reconfigured my fans in the case STILL HOT.STAY FAR FAR FAR away like star wars...

2 out of 5 eggsHOT cards can't keep them cool at all.

Pros: don't see any pros for this card or maybe its both my cards but i have 2 of these i just bought

Cons: HOT HOT HOT...these cards are HOT even with the fans at 100 percent i still hit 95c and higher on these cards. It was fine with 1 card still had high temps but when i added the second card for crossfire. I can heat my house with how much heat is created by these cards...Even with the cooler new cooler.. I also water cooled the older card and still had high temps. i think i am gonna stop buying AMD cards...these things are insanely hot.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome Card for the price.

Pros: This is a very powerful card. Ive compared alot of benchmarks before buying it and for the price it ranked very well. The card is super fast and will run any game on high resolution and high settings without a problem. People in previous reviews complained about overheating and noise levels of the fans and ive had no problems in that area. Card runs 44 C - 65 C without problems.

Cons: This card is huge. I had to take out my hardrive cage to make room for this card. Also added some extra fans in that area to create a better air flow. This card will require alot of room and you will need good air flow.

5 out of 5 eggsSolid Choice in the $300-400 range.

Pros: 1) Runs at 75 degree celsius MAX on games like Crysis 3, Metro Last Light/2033 Redux, Witcher 2, Planetside 2, Max Payne 3, Assassins Creed IV Black Flag, Arma 3 etc.

2) Rarely ever revs up over 40% fan speed. Sometimes it'll kick up to 70% for a minute. Also very good at maintaining a constant speed instead of constantly revving up and down.

3) It will play ANYTHING at 1080p 60 fps. Only a few games like Crysis 3, Metro Redux, Assassins Creed IV Black Flag will you have to turn down your AA to achieve 60 fps. If not, say running at MSAA 4x or SSAA 2x you will still achieve in the mid-40 fps.

4) Though I think you can use it for any gpu, OC Guru from Gigabyte is about as simple as it gets when it comes to overclocking your gpu.

5) Even though it's almost 11 inches long (like 195 mm or something) it does not sag. This is accomplished with a brace running along the top/front of the card long ways.

6) Easy to clean the dust out as there isn't a solid case covering the heat sinks/pcb.

7) Dark blue PCB. I think it looks cool.

Cons: 1) Long card. This is one of the longest cards on the market. You need about 11 inches clearance if you don't want this card rubbing against your HDD cages.

Honestly, I can't think of anything other cons from my personal experience.

Other Thoughts: This is a solid card. It destroys every game I've thrown at it and I have over 200 games in my Steam library. If you're on the fence about getting AMD or Nvidia (like I was) I'd take a look at the new Nvidia 970 and 980. They are solid alternatives and I almost wish I would have waited 5 more months. As the 970 matches it in performance but is $30-40 cheaper. Plus, Nvidia generally has more "special" additional features like G-sync, Phys-x etc. If you are an AMD user and plan to stay that way you can overclock this baby and get R9 290x default performance. If you only have $350-400 to spend, this IS your card. It's solid in every aspect and in a year or two you could Crossfire these beasts and still play at 60 fps 1080p Ultra settings.

1 out of 5 eggsstay away

Pros: None.

Cons: overheating, crashing/freezing, managed to mediate that problem (kinda) with a bios update, now I can actually make 10 seconds into windows, had to underclock to keep it from constantly from constently crashing my system.

Hoping I don't end up like another guy, who tried to get a replacement and got same card back 'fixed' by the amazing people at gigabyte.

Other Thoughts: Will never buy from gigabyte again, and you shouldn't either.
