The Radeon R9 290, the AMD's new flagship GPU, offers the weapon of choice for gamers who demand the best. It's based on the new 28nm Hawaii GPU architecture and introduces the support for DirectX 11.2, capable of rendering reality-redefining imagery in the hottest titles. With massive number of atream processors and a gigantic 4GB GDDR5 memory, this GPU delivers the performance you need for smooth gameplay at extreme settings. The new CrossFire technology allows you to build a multiple graphics card configuration without the use of interconnect bridges. With Ultra Resolution Gaming you will leave HD in the dust by gaming on displays much, much larger. A rich set of AMD innovative technologies is included, such as App Acceleration, AMD PowerTune, AMD ZeroCore, and AMD HD3D technology. With these technology advancements, you'll get more than one way to elevate your gaming experience.

  • newegg NEW WINDFORCE 3X TWO-SLOT 450W cooling system Keeping the same 450W cooling capacity using only two slots, the New WINDFORCE 3X 450W cooling system is equipped with two 8mm and four 6mm cooper heat pipes, inclined fans, and GIGABYTE's "Triangle Cool" technology. This not only provides an effective heat dissipation capacity; with it, GPU Boost 2.0 technology also enables higher performance due to a lower temperature.
  • newegg Smart Fan Control With a hardware switch built in, you can easily change the fan profile to silent mode or performance mode. In Silent Mode, the fan always runs at low speeds to provide a quiet working environment, unless the GPU reaches a certain high temperature. When switched to Performance Mode, the fan speed will be dynamically adjusted based on the GPU temperature variation; this can keep the GPU temperature lower to get a better performance.
  • newegg Built for Crossfire The card features next generation CrossFire support for up to four graphics cards, with no interconnect bridge required.
  • newegg Mantle There’s optimization, and then there’s Mantle. Games enabled with Mantle speak the language of GCN architecture to unlock revolutionary performance and image quality.
  • newegg AMD TrueAudio Technology AMD TrueAudio technology brings the world’s first programmable audio pipeline marking a new frontier in realism for PC gamers. AMD TrueAudio technology empowers game developers with a programmable audio pipeline on the GPU, inviting them to put their unique artistic fingerprint on in-game audio in the same way that the programmable graphics pipeline brought unfettered artistic vision to PC graphics. Enabled games can feature more realistic environmental dynamics, a richer tapestry of sound effects, breathtaking directional audio, and more. AMD TrueAudio technology enhances audio realism by simulating the human brain’s perception of real-world sound, working in concert with the user’s existing audio hardware to recreate a lifelike experience.

3 out of 5 eggsBlack screen of death!

Pros: Pretty much what everyone else says. Good when it works and there's no black screen.

Cons: I have used the Gigabyte @BIOS Flash in hopes of flashing a GPU ROM image of this card supplied by Gigabyte website, results were that it couldn't find my BIOS version! I'm running a rather older AMI BIOS too so my options are limited. The unit runs on 40 degrees and rather cool due to my 6 fan apparatus, using a 850W psu, and drivers are all up to date with Catalyst 14.12 Omega. Windows 7 and 64 bits, just about your standard gaming rig. Black screens are sporadic and inconsistent, usually ranging between 1-2 hours with just idle to average use. I am currently in the middle of an RMA with them and hoping that I was just really unlucky with a hardware issue.

Other Thoughts: Gigabyte, if you could personally give me a support ticket, I can send you an email and try to help you get more details about my issue... I work in IT myself and would be glad to work with you to get this issue squared away so I can focus less on debugging and more on playing some actual games!

1 out of 5 eggsGreat when it works

Pros: Works pretty good when it was working. Runs a little bit hotter than competition but isn't a huge issue.

Cons: Now this card will bug out, crash the display driver/computer and needs to be reseated (waiting or simply restarting does not fix this) before working again after running demanding games. Lines and other artifacts would show up on the screen before the computer becomes unresponsive.

I have tested this GPU on both the X16 and X8 slot on my PC as well as a friend's PC (which didn't have any problem with his 970) and can reproduce the problem.

The upsetting thing is that I have never overclocked this GPU and my case air flow is rather good (3 incoming fan, 3 outgoing fan, some of which are very close to the GPU).

I'm going to have to go through the RMA process. I hope it's as painless as Corsairs when I had to replace a HX650. Will update this review at the conclusion of the RMA process.

Other Thoughts: When it's working the 290 is a fantastic card.

3 out of 5 eggsI really want to like this card

Pros: It is an R9 290 at a pretty great price. I bought the same card last year for 400$ more than I just paid.

Cons: Runs hot, and the fans on the cooler wirr up like turbines when the card is only running at about 60% gpu utilization with temps up in the low 80s Celsius. Right now there is a metal on metal vibration noise coming from my rig that stops if I grab the metal cage of this video card. The gigabyte bios upgrade utility fails gives me a "Bios Version not match!" error when I try to upgrade the bios as described by another NewEgg Commenter. I am getting screen tears during normal desktop usage.

Other Thoughts: If I can get the bios updated on this card and get the screen tearing, vibrations, and high operating temperature issues worked out, I expect I will be very happy with this. However, this is not a card to plug in and go with no issues.

5 out of 5 eggsRevision 1.0

Pros: Idles around 45C and around 70c gaming

I bought one of these a few months back and just installed a second, Haven't run into any issues.

3 free games voucher has some good recent games and is a
nice bonus. (Alien Isolation is on the list)

Cons: Bought the first one @ $400, second @ $270 but that's my fault.

Other Thoughts: Some other reviews mention issues with the 1.0 Revision of this card, I haven't run into any problems.

I have a 1300 watt PSU which is overkill for these two cards, but
They are hungry for power

5 out of 5 eggsamazing card, works fine on older PCI 2.1

Pros: amazing cooler unit, game codes all worked fine, graphics upgrade to the max, amazing performance boost over an hd 6970

Cons: none so far at all

Other Thoughts: its long, but the cooler is narrow, so crossfire is a go

also, when putting in the codes for never settle, it will say expired if you dont include the - inbetween sets. I.E. 1234-5678-90AB-CDEF

and for the other reviews stating it wont work on anything other than PCI 3.0, it works fine on my older system, running a DX58OG and 1st gen 6 core intel

1 out of 5 eggsRun

Pros: 4gig I guess
stays coolish

Cons: Everything else, This was such a waist of money, I can not run duel monitors because it glitches the mouse, it is not all that fast, seams like it is running at 2gig not 4, sometimes the card crashes, do not buy this thing...

5 out of 5 eggsNew Bios avaliable!

Pros: Good performance but some video tears etc... Didn't overclock much. You guys get this review tagged so it shows up. Flashing the Bios to GV-R929WF3-4GD FA2 changed all that. Over clock quite well Rock Solid stable. Note the FA2 in the BIOS title. Run GIGABYTE VGA @BIOS and you should see your BIOS ver, FA1 was my original BIOS Tag this review for the guys out there so this get's read. Game on.

Cons: non at the moment

4 out of 5 eggsExcellent Permformance

Pros: Excellent gaming performance. AMD's Mantle API support. 4GB GDDR5. Multi-Monitor support, HDMI out. Competitively priced, I grabbed it on sale here at Newegg for $250.
Performs quite well and is at the top of the pack for AMD cards according to Tom's Hardware "Best Graphics Cards For The Money: October 2014"

Gigabyte performance and durability!

Newegg FAST!

Cons: Runs warmer than my old Gigabyte HD 6870 2GB, more power consumption, bet these two things were expected, this thing is powerhouse BEAST compared to older wimpier cards.
This card dose not perform quite as well as the last series HD 7990 some of the GTX and TITANS according to "Tom's Hardware Best Graphics Cards For The Money: October 2014" but who wants to pay those $800 price tags anyway? This card will suffice at a real value.

Other Thoughts: This card fit nicely into a older -Air King NZXT Tempest - PC Case, paired with an -AsRock FX Extreme 3-, with an -AMD 3+ FX6300 CPU-, 8GB of RAM, and a 650W Themaltake Smart Series PSU.
Using -Display Driver UnInstaller- found at -3D Guru- website, I removed my old GPU drivers and I clean installed the latest AMD 14-9 64Bit drivers from
official the official AMD web site. I've had really good luck with past Gigabyte motherboards and video cards in builds. So far I'm very pleased with this purchase.

4 out of 5 eggshot!

Pros: Got it for $299.99, literally two days later it was $15 off, now it has a 15% off code, >_< anyways...

Worked when I got it, although did find out my first pci-express lane is bad, old card was giving me problems as well just got to confirm it was the lane not the card.

Can play tomb raider on ultra settings at about 40-50fps

Fit in my case :3

Has 3 fans... whether or not they work well/properly is another question.

Installation was easy, the power connections being at the top of the card rather than the rear near the drive bays made it possible to fit in my case with ease. Wouldn't have been able to apply power without removing the drive bay if it had been at the rear.

Idles at 40 degrees Celsius which isn't bad but isn't great either imo since it has 3 fans you'd think it would be a bit lower. >_>

Cons: Runs really really hot. I hit 95 degrees Celsius without even trying. Turned on tomb raider and walked away for 20 minutes, came back to the sound of fans at 100%, looked at msi afterburner and saw it stable at 94-95 degrees Celsius. Wasn't even playing the game it was just sitting in the start up screen/menu.

Part of this is poor ventilation in my case, I have the fractal design r4 series with the two 140mm fans it came with, running at 12v, one set to push the other set to pull. This card puts out so much heat I have to keep my side panel off to keep it at ~85 degrees with a load, case gets warm to the touch if I don't. Planning to get more fans hopefully that will help.

The card revs up to 100% usage when any load is put on it which is nice for reducing lag, but man does it make it get hot fast and sometimes for no reason.

I'm planning to eventually setup up a water cooling loop, made the mistake of not getting a reference pcb card, not realizing at the time there was a difference for water blocks and also learning how hard it is to find a block for this video card.

Other Thoughts: This is my first gigabyte video card I've used their motherboards and loved them, can't say I'm all that impressed with the graphics cards though. I'm in a house with AC, room temp usually around 68-72 degrees Fahrenheit.
In reality though other than the temperature liking to be in the high 80s to mid 90s. It isn't that bad a card just wish the fans cooled more efficiently or I could find a water block for the silly non-reference pcb.

Last card I had was the r7 260x from xfx, which at the time was great when I had a small budget.

Other parts in my build: psu-RM1000, cpu-amd 8350 with aftermarket cooler, ram-16GB cosair vengence 1600mhz 9-9-9-24, 2TB WD, 256GB muskin sdd, fractal design r4 silent edition, mobo-ASRock Fatal1ty 990fx Killer

Loses one egg for the crazy heat when in a start screen(seriously 95 degrees...) or with any load really >_>, Preforms as expected otherwise.
