Best buy for 3d graphics
- Pros: My first foray into the world of PCIE. Previous card was a NVidia 6600GT (AGP) which was passable on many games, but it was never going to keep up with Crysis or Oblivion except on very poor settings. 3dmark06 score went from 1999 to around 8800 with this card, and an upgrade to an Asrock P45 motherboard with a Pentium E6300. I believe there is more room for improvement (crossfire?!?!) The card on shell shocker was only $40 (assuming the rebate comes in). Can't beat that price!
- Cons: Not silent, but it is not noticeable compared to 4x80mm case fans.
- Other Thoughts: I bought this card for use with an aging 370W power supply (13/14amp rails). Works fine!
Looks Good
- Pros: Review title refers to image quality, not necessarily to the card itself. This is a HUGE step up from the card it replaced (a Radeon X1600 Pro). The difference between the image quality on the old card and on the new card, on the same two monitors, is like night & day. The picture is sharp and the color is clear. Windows 7's Experience Index, for whatever that's worth, rates this card a 6.8 out of 7.9 on both Desktop and 3D components. The card's fan is quiet (at least, it's not louder than the X1600 it replaced), and an added bonus is that it doesn't require additional power, which is excellent for those whose computers cannot physically accommodate a power supply with PCIe power connectors (read: those who have company-issued PCs that are quite cramped inside).
- Cons: None really ... the card does what I need it to do.
- Other Thoughts: AMD's Catalyst Suite installer crashes out if it can't find the Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable. Still. You'd think that, after this long, they'd actually include that in the installation package and install it for you if it's not found. I mean, the Catalyst Suite download is currently 62.9MB in size ... a couple of megabytes on top of that really wouldn't make too big a difference.
RE-REVIEW: After 8 months
- Pros: Great value, fantastic ATI support, still holding its own
- Cons: None at the moment
- Other Thoughts: After eight months of playing WoW daily for 3-4 hours at a time, this device hasn't choked, hiccuped or crashed on me. Never, not once. ATI support has been nothing less than stellar. I've tried every driver update since January, and every update has gone without a hitch. Currently I'm using the 9.8 driver, and WoW pushes about 60 fps in Dalaran using "high" settings. Hits a low around 25 fps when there's a lot of action, but meh, to be expected. Tears through Bioshock and Half-Life 2: The Lost Coast like they're tissue paper. I'm curious to see what it can do with Crysis and Far Cry, but I've no real interest in those games. I opened the case last night and noticed that the heatsink/fan had attracted a lot of dust. I blew it out with compressed air and did a quick cleanup with a rubbing-alcohol wipe. All set. My last card was Nvidia, this card is Radeon, and I know what my next card will be. If you are on a budget, this is the card for you.
