The new member of MSI Lightning Series family, the N580GTX Lightning is tailor-made for extreme overclocking. MSI introduces the unique Power4 Architecture to provide the most powerful and stable power for the N580GTX Lightning, thus leading to significantly increased overclocking potential. The N580GTX Lightning is also rich in exclusive features, including the new Twin Frozr III dual-fan cooling with innovative Propeller Blade technology, Triple Overvoltage through MSI’s Afterburner software and top-quality Military Class II components. MSI N580GTX Lightning is designed to offer the ultimate in overclocking capabilities and is the superior choice for overclocking enthusiasts seeking to set new world records!

  • newegg MSI Power4 Architecture for Overclocking Reliability The N580GTX Lightning inherits the impressive Power4 architecture from previous Lightning series cards along with improved components and design in four areas. Besides the 16 phase PWM design, the PWM module is twice as large as before and provides double the amount of current to the GPU. Memory has its own independent power supply using an 8-pin connector for minimum interference to greatly increase overclocking potential. The next-generation Proadlizer capacitor (*4) increases signal stability by leaps and bounds while CopperMOS, with 2x high current capacity, provides the GPU with a large and stable power supply. Combined, these features provide extreme overclocking enthusiasts with a more stable operating environment and the best performance out there.
  • newegg Twin Frozr III and Propeller Blade Technology for Supreme Cooling The all new Twin Frozr III cooling design utilizes the innovative Propeller Blade technology to create 20% more airflow compared to conventional fan blades. The airflow also covers a large surface to remove heat quickly and effectively, and coupled with nickel-plated copper base, twin 9cm PWM fans, SuperPipe technology, and the form-in-one heatsink, the result is 21°C cooler and 5.5dB quieter than the reference design under full loads.
  • newegg GPU/Memory/PLL(VDDCI) Triple Overvoltage The MSI N580GTX Lightning comes with MSI's exclusive Afterburner overclocking utility, which not only adjusts GPU and memory clock but also manage the GPU/Memory/PLL(VDDCI) voltages to maximize overclocking potential. Thanks to Triple Overvoltage, the overclocking capability of the N580GTX Lightning can be boosted 24% up when compared with the reference board.
  • newegg Extreme Overclocking Functions For hardware enthusiasts, the MSI N580GTX Lightning graphic card comes with exclusive extreme overclocking features. Apart from V-Check Points and V-Switch for monitoring and adjusting the GPU/Memory/PLL(VDDCI) voltages in real time, Dual Bios and XtremeCool switches help to effectively prevent potential problems stemming from liquid nitrogen cooling. PWM Clock Tuner also helps to increase overclocking potential. All these functions come together to make the N580GTX Lightning the ultimate graphic card for extreme overclocking.
  • newegg Top Quality Military Class II Components The MSI N580GTX Lightning graphic card uses top-quality Military Class II components including All Solid Cap for overclocking and full-speed operation, SFC for 10% higher efficiency, and 30% increase in maximum current, as well as Hi-c Cap with Tantalum core which boasts 8 times the lifetime of conventional solid capacitors. These high-quality components not only increase the graphic cards' overall service life but also enhance GPU stability.
  • newegg LPL (Lightning Power Layer) Independent circuit design for GPU, memory and power layer decreases noise between different signals to ensure extreme power stability.

4 out of 5 eggsIts very large

Pros: Rock solid stable right out of the box. Powers my twin Samsung T240HD's like a champ. Full screen gaming on one screen at over 60+fps and surfing the net on the other.

Cons: its huge, yes, thats what she said because its HUGE. Barely squeezed it into my Lian Li PC7FNWX. Also, I think I could bake inside the case now. This card brought the ambient case temp up by 5 degrees.

Other Thoughts: But hey, what's 5 degrees among friends with ultra high power PCs? It's still ridiculously fast, and renders everything Ive thrown at it without missing a beat. Video lag? Please, that doesn't exist here.

Pros: This monster never ceases to blow my mind. I've overclocked it to 1.0ghz ... That is phenomenal. that is 300 mhz past normal core clock! and even in a very crowded case, it never goes above 58° C, even after hours of game play. the card idles around 38°C. Most graphics cards go into the 80's and even 90's so its a big step up from any other card. it gets 60 fps steady on skyrim battlefield 3 crisis 2 and Batman Arkham city. This thing is worth every penny. I absolutely love it.very quiet too.

Cons: Its huge. 12" long. But it fit so no complaints.

Other Thoughts: Just buy it. Its honestly the best

5 out of 5 eggsAmazing Graphics Card

Pros: Very easily Overclockable with MSI Afterburner

Comes factory overclocked past default speeds

Twin Frozr fans keep card cool and silent

Cons: HUGE! Won't fit in most mid-ATX cases

Other Thoughts: Uniengine standard bench score (1680 res): 1386
3D Mark 11 Performance/Extreme score: 7432/3186

I currently have this card overclocked to 930 core with 1.100 V, and it runs extremely stable. I have put it through multiple 5 hour stress tests using Uniengine, and it has not crashed yet.

I'm positive this card can clock much higher with higher voltages, but my main goal is to build a quiet gaming rig, and this card more than meets that purpose. At 930 clock with 1.1V, I can keep the card under 70 degrees with only 66% fanspeed for hours of intensive usage (while stress testing temperature never rose above 70). Past 70% fanspeed there is a slightly audible whine, so that's the limit I have set.

Card benches well over stock GTX580s by far, and Afterburner makes it extremely easy to overclock and set custom fan controls.

However, card will not fit in most mid-ATX without modifications. For Antec P183/Fractal Arc Midi, upper HDD cage must be removed.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: This card plays all my games beautifully, and maxed out at well over 60 frames. I've tried Cryis, Crysis 2, BF3, Dirt 3, Witcher manhandles em' all. The fit and finish of the card is amazing - these things are pretty hefty. With a single card, you can easily overclock to ~890 core without an overvoltage and temperatures still are well within safe ranges.

I liked this card so much I just had to buy another. Clocks set back to stock (834 core) I never top 65 C with either card on any game. Simply amazing. You won't regret getting a 580 gtx, let alone this model.

Cons: The fans can be loud, but I never even hear them even with mild overclocks.

These cards are huge, but who ISN'T expecting that these days?

2 out of 5 eggsWhatch Out NOW

Pros: Dont own this card

Cons: Dont count on the advertised rebate

Other Thoughts: Msi does not care about its customers, Look to different MFG if u care about getting what u paid for. and peace of mind if they cant get u ur rebate then warranty must be out of the question.

5 out of 5 eggsCorrection

Pros: NewEgg superfast service and customer support. Best in the business. Shipped my replacement in under 1 day!
The RMA replacement of the original was fine. Found out there is a "secret" compartment under the main foam packaging that houses the manual, driver discs, and sli connectors. Seems like neither MSI tech support or NewEgg CS knows about this. Feel like a dope I didn't see it before, but after both units did not have drivers or manuals or SLI bridges, got suspicious.
Plan to WC mine with a Swiftech GPU block, as I did with a Lightning 480. This GPU draws less power than the 480, so all should be good OC'd to 900 or above.

Cons: The documentation should be a lot better. There should be more info on what all those switches do, not only the BIOS LN2/std switch. MSI put a lot of technology into the Lightning series and it seems like they want to keep its full functionality a secret.

Other Thoughts: For those concerned about not getting the 3G version, unless you miss the colored fan blades and led lighting, the 1.5 G should be sufficient for almost any current config. There is a comparative review of the Lightning 580 vs 580 XE and they found that the GPU is the limiting factor in using the additional 1.5G, as frame rates need to be well below 30 FPS before you see a frame rate difference between the 3G and 1.5G. So wait for the next GPU series (600+) before you worry about 3G and save yourself the extra cash.
Closest product to these MSI Lightning are the EVGA Classified series. Also use upgraded components and custom board layout with a BIOS switch. But EVGA is using cheaper phenolic PC board material vs the MSI epoxy-glass, a choice I cannot see makes sense on a $500+ video card.

1 out of 5 eggsRecycled?

Pros: NewEgg service

Cons: I got this unit today after the weekend special. I own a Lghtning GTX 480, so was expecting a high quality version of the 580 (which was not out last year when I bought the 480).
Big let down with this unit. Came like it was an RMA or used by someone else. NewEgg swears they don't open the package so I am not sure if this was shipped by MSI this way or not. NO sealing stickers on the outer box, no driver disks, no manuals, no rebate form, and cover film on outside of fan shroud was partially pulled off, then replaced. I paid for a new unit and if they are re-shipping RMA'd units, that does not fit my description of new.

Other Thoughts: NewEgg is RMAing for a replacement. Will provide another review when I get that one. If I get another like this, it's going back as well. My 480 will be the last MSI card I buy. Going back to EVGA

5 out of 5 eggsIts BIG and BAD !!!!

Pros: Great cooling, great performance.

Cons: Its big, a bit more $.

Other Thoughts: I5 2500k @ 4ghz @ 1.16v, Asus P8P67 PRO, 8gb 1600 Ripjaw, Antec 850TPQ. This set up plays BF3 maxed out, AA and settings @ ultra with no overclocking on GPU @ 1920x1200. Avg FPS with fraps is in the mid 50s. GPU idles in the mid 30s and under load never gets above 61*, all with auto fan. Had to cut a little on a Antec three hundred to make it fit.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Addition to the Rig!

Pros: Stays cool.
Easily overclockable (850/1750, and this was easy with MSI Afterburner)
I make my friends jealous.

Cons: Can't run surround monitors without two of these bad boys.
Price to performance makes a GTX570 a slightly better value (but I knew this already)

Other Thoughts: This is a great card. I upgraded my entire computer where I had a pitiful ATI 5570. This card spanks the performance of my previous setup. Even though this is obvious, I get absolutely jaw-dropping graphics. I max all my games at 1920x1080 (Witcher 2, Starcraft II, Battlefield 2, etc.)

Previous reviews spoke of the card's length (12 inches) but I have plenty of clearance in my Corsair 600T. Get this card!!

5 out of 5 eggsJust what i needed

Pros: Absolutely love this card. Couldnt ask for a better GTX 580. It stays cool and overclocks easy. Not to mention it comes already at an 832 mhz overclock from a stock 752 like most others.

I have mine stable at 930mhz overclock using MSI Afterburner with fans at 65% and i never see temps above 68C.

I have another setting to 970mhz overclock with fans at 80% and temps get to a high of 69C.

I certainly plan to get another card for SLI.

If you play BF3 at 1920x1080 and settings all ultra with max AA i get average of 55 - 70 fps. Im certain that when it comes out with DX11 it will drop to 25 - 35 fps. DICE did say you need 2 GTX580 to run the game at Ultra!

Cons: Wish i saw the 3GB version before i purchased this one. Only an extra 100 more :/
