5 out of 5 eggsAbove and beyond what was expected

Pros: This card will not quit! I chose this card based on what I had heard about the quality that MSI provides and its ability to be overclocked. I bought a waterblock for this card and began overclocking. The clocks kept going up and up. I was able to get it stable @ 1300/1900. This is higher than some of the super clocked cards such as the Lightning!

Cons: If you are going to run it at full load, you will need a custom fan curve and these fans get LOUD!

Other Thoughts: I am blown away by the performance of this reference card! It sits on top of the single card performance cart on one of the forums I am involved with.

2 out of 5 eggsLock Up During Gaming

Pros: This video card is absolutely brilliant - when it's working. The display is so crisp and it astounds me the quality of the monitors and details when things are moving smoothly

Cons: But to why I only give it two stars. The main reason I give it two stars is because 1) it's fairly loud when you're trying to game, but that's not horrendous and is expected. And 2) I have the latest drivers, and I've already RMA-ed it, but I am STILL having a lock up whenever I game. It works fine for the day to day, but anything I try to play, I can't even make it to an hour before my computer freezes up. I have to perform a hard reboot in order to resolve it.

There really doesn't even seem to be a reason for it to lock up. With the latest drivers, GPU usage spikes every now and then, but it doesn't stay at 100% or anything like that. The temperature never rises above 60 degrees (celsius). And the auto fan feature isn't very intuitive. I would imagine it's supposed to adjust on it's own, but it doesn't. So I'm stuck monitoring VGA through MSI Afterburner, but it STILL crashes on me. It's incredibly frustrating.

Manufacturer Response:

5 out of 5 eggsMSI R7970

Pros: Well constructed, looks good. Great FPS in many games. I have two in CrossFire with 80-120 in most parts of Skyrim, BF3, Far Cry 3. Also using them with World Community Grid and it goes through work units at an impressive rate. Runs fairly cool, fans don't need to be turned up very high, and noise is reasonable, even quiet depending on fan settings.

Cons: No cons with MSI's card, so I will not deduct eggs from their product. However I have some issues with AMD's drivers. Some games have serious errors, and a few are just unplayable, until new drivers are released. Even with updated drivers there can still be bugs.

Other Thoughts: Despite the driver annoyances, I am impressed with this card for its GPGPU power with WCG.

3 out of 5 eggsMSI>AMD

Pros: High Memory, Solid Quality, Great Warranty, High OCs on stock Voltages, Reasonable Cooling(see Other Thoughts). I honestly hold MSI to a higher standard than EVGA, sapphire, Gigabyte. may not have the longest warranty but they will honor their product till the last hour.

Cons: MSI makes fantastic graphics cards, so i dont hold them to the weak points on this particular card. Software support(on this being AMD's flagship GPU) is utterly disappointing. Crossfire requires you to tweak profiles to maintain reasonable temps on the slave card, and even though you get 3gbs of VRAM you will hit the wall on games at 1080p with the high res texture packs. microstutter issues result in random game crashes and red screens while the heating issues will cause your top card to reach 60 c on idle and the stock fan settings will allow it to do so without reving the fan. when the temp sensor finally gets up to bring the temps back down sounds like your taking off in an f16 with the windows down.

Other Thoughts: i had gone back and fourth to 7970 and 4gb 680 and though they both hold their own, AMD just dosnt seem to have their R and D or their prioritys in order.

both offer 3d, but good luck finding a monitor for the AMD side.
both have high VRAM, but it seems you can hit the wall real quick with 3gbs and high sample rates. power and cooling goes to nvidia, and in the end, your not going to have to downclock your 680 in SLI to keep the slave card cool. the 7970 CF setup would idle at 61c with all fans installed on my 810 switch.

5 out of 5 eggsOCed to 1010 MHz and same 1375MHz mem

Pros: Just got a second MSI R7970. Devil May Cry FPS@925MHZ was a woppting 363.985 FPS with my SABERTOOTH 990FX with FX8150 CPU & 16 GB 1866 MHZ RAM. Now, with the clore clock turned up to 1010 MHz, the FPS for Devil May Cry 4 went up to 377.1 MHZ. The FPS increase is 13.115 FPS . Hows that for OC with Crossfire.

Cons: Seems bottlenecked ny the Motherboard or CPU. No fault of GPU.

Other Thoughts: My Motherboard is a Version 1 SABERTOOTH 990 FX. It's probably some what restricted by PCI 2.0. Also I have 2 differant cards. The first one that I got was AMD red & black. The second one is Gunmetel black. Does anyone know if they changed just the shroud on the card.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Love the card. Very quiet, cool & fast. Card is even in performance with 2 HD 6870s in cross fire. I was surprized at how close. Very fast for a single GPU.

Cons: Big & Heavy. Don't Jar or bump the computer too hard. Card weighs 5 pounds. Be carful when moving the machine. Can break PCI slot.

Other Thoughts: Love the card. Running all week. Installed it 12/26/2012. Runs great so far.

4 out of 5 eggsHD 7970 Wow

Pros: Fastest single GPU. Replaced 2 very loud Very hot XFX HD-6870 2 GB 900m's. This MSI R7970 is very cool, & compaired to my HD 6870's it extremely quiet. Right now my temp is 38 c, Fan speed 20%. Way quieter than my HD-6870. Averaged FPS on my SABERTOOTH 990 FX with 8150FX & 16 GB RAM was 142 FPS VS my HD 6870s in Crossfire at 151.3. I know that it may sound like the 2 HD 6870s are better, but they are not. a singl HD 6870 only got an average of 95.7, & was very loud. After runnig FPS on Resident Evil 5, the fan Speed was at 23%, and the temp hit 55c. Allot better than Fans screaming at 45 to 50%.

Cons: Coil noise not caused by GPU. Caused by Motherboard. In fact almost no noise from card at all. Crossfire 6870's win at 19.5 FPS more FPS, if you can call that a con.

Other Thoughts: If I decide to run 2 way Crossfire with these R7970's I might see FPS at 240 or above. In theory I shouls see average of 4 Resident 5 Tests of around 284 FPS. Wow 142 FPS on Resident Evil 5. My point is that 1 single HD 7970 is closely matched, & in some cases may be faste than a set of HD 6870s in crossfire. Good Job AMD, & MSI. Love the card.

2 out of 5 eggsPowerful card with some problems.

Pros: Powerful card, nice looking and somewhat quiet.

Cons: I got this card 2 weeks ago for my freshly built machine. I am running the latest amd drivers on a windows 8 64. I usually get full red screen which freezes my PC about once a day. Card started doing high pitched noises while playing games and also makes my games crash. It's annoying that I payed $400 for a video card and I get that much problems. I would of excepted a flawless card.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Card!

Pros: This thing can handle anything thrown at it on the market today at 1920x1080! It looks sexy in red and black!

Cons: I wish it had a better cooling system but it's not bad by any means! It's basically just the reference card.

Other Thoughts: People are right, it's a big card that won't fit in most mid sized cases. Mine fits in my Cooler Master Haf x 912 because you can remove the hard drive trays and use the two at the bottom. Great Card!
