The MSI R7970 Lightning is the new heir to the throne of Lightning graphics cards. Equipped with AMD's 28 nm Radeon HD 7970 GPU, the MSI R7970 Lightning features an all-new Unlocked Digital Power Architecture that incorporates an Unlocked BIOS, Digital PWM Controller, and Enhanced Power Design to boost overclocking potential to new heights and make overclocking easier than ever. In an industry first, the exclusive "GPU Reactor" power supply module reduces power supply noise and also boosts overclocking stability as well. To keep this beast cool, the MSI R7970 Lightning utilizes the latest Twin Frozr IV Thermal Design equipped with Dust Removal Technology. The dual 10 cm fans with Propeller Blade Technology generate massive airflow for fast heat dissipation while remaining whisper silent. The two form-in-one heat sinks improve cooling for memory and the power supply module as well ensure structural integrity. The R7970 Lightning uses Military Class III components which have passed rigorous third-party testing to meet MIL-STD-810G standards, guaranteeing the card's stability and reliability under actual use conditions. Moreover, the "3X3 OC Kits" are designed to simplify overclocking, which makes it easier than ever for enthusiasts to fine-tune the performance of their graphics cards. For both professional users and gaming enthusiasts alike, the R7970 Lightning's ability to simultaneously run 6 displays makes it the natural choice!

  • newegg Unlocked Digital Power Provides Record-Breaking Potential The R7970 Lightning boasts an all-new Unlocked Digital Power architecture that provides record breaking potential. The key components involved include the Unlocked BIOS, digital PWM chipset, and an improved power supply design. Unlocked BIOS removes CCC overclocking limits, Power Tune limit is increased by 180%, and OCP limits are relaxed to completely unleash the graphics card's overclocking potential. The digital power supply signal provides voltage signals that are more stable and accurate than conventional analog designs, meaning the voltage can be adjusted more quickly and precisely during overclocking. The improved power supply design provides double the power of the reference board and consists of 17 power supply parameters, dual 8-pin power supply connectors, and the Lightning Power Layer (LPL) design. For true overclocking enthusiasts, the R7970 Lightning with Unlocked Digital Power is simply a dream come true!
  • newegg GPU Reactor for the Ultimate Power Core The MSI R7970 Lightning implements the innovative "GPU Reactor" power supply module which, when installed on the back of the GPU, increases current volume by 88%, reduces power supply noise by 13%, and improves overall overclocking stability. MSI GPU Reactor is easy to install and has built in safety features that make it easy even for ordinary users to install and remove.
  • newegg Extreme Cooling Design for Better Cooling and Structural Strength The striking design of the new Twin Frozr IV comes from the two large 10cm PWM fans with Propeller Blade Technology that cool the advanced cooling body of the Twin Frozr IV. Under the aluminum Twin Frozr IV body, you can find a high density fin grid array that provides heat dissipating area that is fed by heat-pipes featuring MSI's SuperPipe technology. MSI has also incorporated its exclusive Dust Removal Technology. Fans are running in reverse for 30 seconds after booting to remove dust from the heat sinks and keep the graphics card's cooling performance running at optimum levels. The R7970 Lightning also boasts two form-in-one heat sinks. One heat sink is located on the front of the graphics card to cool the memory and power supply modules, while the second heat sink on the back of the card helps to protect and reinforce the card structure. This extreme cooling design provides the R7970 Lightning with the best cooling performance and the most reliable structure.
  • newegg Premium Materials and User-friendly Overclocking Design The R7970 Lightning was equipped with Military Class III components certified to MIL-STD-810G military standards in seven different categories by a third-party laboratory. Be it tantalum core Hi-c CAP around the graphics card, the CopperMOS cooling design, the form-in-one Golden SSC, or as the card's moisture/rust-proof Dark Solid CAP, all work together to provide the MSI R7970 Lightning with the best possible stability. For overclocking enthusiasts, MSI has developed the 3X3 OC Kits: V-Check Points enable GPU, Memory and VDDCI voltage to be monitored while Triple Overvoltage and Triple Temperature Sensor enable overclockers to quickly fine-tune and track the performance of their graphics card using enthusiasts favorite Afterburner overclocking software. The 4 Mini DisplayPorts and 2 DVI ports on the R7970 Lightning enable AMD Eyefinity technology to drive 6 screen output with just one card, providing just the kind of performance industry professionals and gaming enthusiasts need.
  • newegg New GCN Architecture for Leading DirectX 11 Performance AMD Radeon HD 7900 Series (codename Tahiti) boasts the world's first 28nm GPU architecture which is optimized for gaming and compute. The Tahiti GPU Radeon HD 7970 features up to 32 Compute Units, each with 64 Vector Units for up to 2048 Stream Processors, along with dual geometry engines and 8 Render Back ends than can process 32 color ROPs and 128 Z/Stencil ROPs per clock. 5 out of 5 eggsExtremely Pleased w/ MSI Support

Pros: This is not so much review of this card (others have already given it the praise it rightly deserves), But a review of the level of service I received from MSI when my last card died.

Cons: Now it will be a bit longer before I can justify upgrading my GPU & there are some very nice ones right around the corner now that this one is discontinued.

Other Thoughts: I was using the 6970 Lightning card for a couple years when it started acting up on me: It was locking up with Vertical Lines & Freeze outs; just plain Not working. It would run Fine if I Underclocked it to Stock 6970 speeds, but that is not what I paid for. I quickly & painlessly obtained an RMA from their website & returned the card to MSI for repair, but it seems it was beyond such remedy. After less than 2 weeks, & after verifying I was not using Crossfire configuration, & even though I had mere months or weeks left on my warranty, they offered to ship me this 7970 Lightning as a replacement. I received it a few days later & have been tremendously pleased. Perhaps it is a bad sign of the times, but I was very surprised to have received such prompt & satisfactory Service from ANY company. Not to mention I have a brand new, much better replacement part flawlessly devouring my version of Crysis3 with Ultra High settings even @ 3240x1920 res & great frame rates. I would recommend MSI to anyone with NO hesitation, especially if the question pertains to Customer Service. Thank You MSI & newegg for keeping my gaming Amazing.

Pros: Powerful card.

Cons: Can't run 144hz. Highest I got from it was 75hz, but my screen resolution lowered at 75hz. 60hz is where it stayed at 1920x1080.

Other Thoughts: Overall, the card is amazing. If you do not have a problem with not having 120hz nor 144hz, but okay with 60hz then I recommend you to buy this card (if they ever put it back on stock).

2 out of 5 eggsNewEgg makes up where MSI fails

Pros: -Looks to kill
-Solid, heavy, quality construction
-Beautiful black, brushed aluminium backplate
-matches my Z77 MPower mobo :)
-1070 Mhz core clock
-wicked-fast free shipping
-again, looked incredible (i think i'm having withdraws)
-2 free AAA games

Cons: -couldn't handle anything past a 30mhz boost on the core, no matter what voltage
-started artifacting after I lowered the core to stock everything
-not enough of these cards instock for NewEgg to send me a replacement
-lack of HDMI slot(not really a huge con, seeing as how there is an included adaptor)
-poor support by MSI

Other Thoughts: I purchased this card after reading countless reviews saying that it is an overclocking monster. I had been waiting for two weeks, constantly checking NewEgg to see if any would come back in stock. After almost giving up hope on this card, I FINALLY found one in stock here on NewEgg. After I purchased the Lightning, it only took 3 days until I received the card! I was so excited to open it up and get started on overclocking. Using the latest MSI Afterburner and AMD drivers, my experience with the card proceeded as follows:

Day 1: everything worked fine, stock voltages/clocks on everything, updated 13.1 drivers, etc.

Day 2: tried a mild 30mhz boost on the core, effectively taking the core frequency to 1100Mhz. Ran tests in Unigen Heaven and Crysis and all was well.

Day 3: tried a 50mhz increase on the core with stock voltages. This resulted in my computer locking up, freezing etc. I boosted the core voltage to 1.2v. Still nothing. After boosting the core voltage to 1.25 volts, I still had no ability to get the card to function properly, and only at (an attempted) 1150Mhz! I even tried this on the LN2 BIOS, same story.

Day 4: returned the card to stock voltages/core speeds. Artifacts everywhere.

I decided to return this card because I believe that paying $500 for a card that can't do what most reference 7970's can do ( 1200Mhz core and $100 bucks cheaper) is ridiculous.

When I called MSI and asked if they could send me a replacement, they said that they dont support overclocking, so they refused a replacement. This statement almost made me laugh out loud on the phone. I expected better MSI. As a company, you dont ship a $500 card with unlocked voltage and LN2 BIOS and say that you "dont support overclocking". You guys hold gravitas in the overclocking community. It was the "overclockability" of this card that i've heard so much about in countless online reviews and forums that made me decide to go with you in the first place. "We don't support overclocking"...c'mon, seriously?

In any case, I have not given up on this card. In the event that NewEgg gets any of these cards back in stock, I will try and get my hands on one. If not however, I will look for a different card, or at least get a different card from NewEgg.
NewEgg took my card back and gave me a full refund. They are an incredible business and have helped me build my dream computer. They are #1 for computer parts in my book. I will continue to recommend them to my friends/co-workers for quality parts and service. NewEgg will continue to have my business for quite some time.

1 out of 5 eggsDissapointed

Pros: -Huge, custom heatsinks and fans
-Stayed very cool
-Sturdy construction
-6 ports

Cons: -Defective (artifacting and cracking all over the place)
-Only ran 3 monitors at once (yes I was using active adapters)
-MSI support lied to me when I called them asking about the product before purchase

Other Thoughts: Newegg customer support is awesome. I'm receiving a full refund for this product. MSI customer support was responsive and helped me identify that the product was defective very quickly.

I'm sure the product is awesome, if I had received a fully-operational one... but...

MSI lied to me. I called up MSI and HIS (both make similar 7970 cards) asking very specific questions about getting a 6-monitor setup working IF I were to buy their card. What I need to purchase, which monitors will and won't work, and the primary question: "Will this card control all 6 monitors independently from the 6 individual ports", to which they told me "yes". After talking with MSI's customer support after I found their lightning card to be defective, I discovered that MSI (and HIS for that matter) lied to me. MSI told me, after-the-fact, that in order to get above 4 monitors, I would need to set up an eyefinity array. I also later discovered that the video controllers for displayport won't support more than two active adapters at once.

I feel cheated, and am quite angry with MSI as a company. I understand defects, but I did my homework on this, and it proved to be useless. I doubt I will buy MSI ever again if I can help it. This experience has left a bad taste in my mouth, especially for a $500 card.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

We apologize for the issues that you are having with this product.
This card can work with six (6) monitors in one Eyefinity group.
You will need to make sure to use certified Active DP adapters listed in AMD's website, see below link.

3 out of 5 eggsGreat while it lasted.

Pros: Amazing card for gaming on a triple monitor setup, temps are not that high even when set on auto fan speed.

Cons: It died within 2 weeks of use, I sent to back to newegg for a replacement but the MSI 7970 Lighting was out of stock so they gave me a refund.

Other Thoughts: I wish they would've gave me the option of replacing the card with a different one or wait until they were in stock so they can send me a new one. But they refunded me my money, I might purchase another one.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

1 out of 5 eggsGood for a few days

Pros: Looked nice, massive card makes you think you can take over the world with it.Ran bf3 at max settings very smooth.

Cons: Stoped working after four days.

Other Thoughts: The card ran great for about four days and then just after a bf3 session the screen went ll white.I had to hit the reset and the computer rebuted but the moniter had no signal.I put my two 5770's back in and everything is fine again. This will be my first RMA.Guess my lucky streak is over. These things happen so i will give it one more chance with this card but if the next one is faulty i will go with some other brand card.

3 out of 5 eggsGames look great, GPU temp HIGH

Pros: My games ran SO good on it. Love it.

Cons: The GPU temps were around 90c on the Afterburner.
Read some forums and people say that is to high. Might need a new card?

Other Thoughts: Other then the temp so far I love it!

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

AMD rates the Radeon HD 7970 ASICs up to 95C, so you are technically within a safe operating temperature.

You may want to try improving the airflow inside of your system to see if you can lower the temps. If you still need assistance, please contact us directly at usreview@msi.com. Thank you.
