2 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Runs very cool with the twin fozer 4 setup.

Cons: Worst set of cards that I have owned to date (wished i kept my gtx670). Got 2 cards for crossfire setup. Had 1 bad card from the start, card would run at 95 degrees celsius. These cards (atleast the ones that I have) dont overclock with a darn. I cant seem to get over 1ghz on core and 1400mhz on ram. My gtx670 had no problems hitting over 1.2Ghz and 6500mhz on ram.

Other Thoughts: Tried to have msi tech support help me out but getting no where on it.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

We apologize for the issues that you are having with this product.
The GPUs in PE version were the "knocked out" version of Lightning products because they could not perform to the high standards Lightning-series carries.
However, PE were still a better performer than standard reference products, additionally, this also proves that our PE/Lightning products are superior since they were cherry-picked/verified individually by us.

If you have any questions, feel free to get in touch with our tech support team directly at 626.271.1004 for assistance during regular business hours from M to F, 9am to 6pm Pacific Time.
Or you can email us at usreview@msi.com, thank you.

Best Regards,

5 out of 5 eggsLightning in disguise

Pros: Ignore previous review stating this card will not be stable at lightning settings. That is false. Its physically the same card and I have confirmed this with MSI, down to the dual bios. Overclocks just as well as the avg. review on a lightning and runs very cool. MSI has stepped up their game since my previous 6950s.

Cons: Blue leds, wish they were red. The usual excessive, poor application of thermal paste and a warranty tamper seal :/

5 out of 5 eggsHD 7970 O/C

Pros: I am using the MSI HD 7970 'power" edition, I tried to O/C the card when I first purchased it with limited results, after burning the GPU in for several hours this changed, [the same can be said for the CPU I am using]. Before burn in the GPU would flake out past 975 or so, after burn in with OCCT and the MSI program I stopped my O/C at 1200 GHz [OCCT stable] with a slight voltage increase, temps increased from 50-60c at 100% to 75c+ that was another reason I stopped. I tend to push new GPU’s a lot the first 30 days I own them as Newegg's RMA process is a lot less painful then any manufactures I know of. I purchased the MSI as no Asus cards were available and I am glad I did, the performance increase from the HD 6970 was noticeable at 1200 its a lot more to say the least.

Cons: None yet

Other Thoughts: Overclocking this card was much simpler than the HD 6970, it needed less time to burn in and a LOT less voltage to get it where I wanted it – I purchased this card because the components are exceptional - MSI and Asus seem to have better luck with their bin procedure than the other large manufactures, I have never had a complete dud from either of these manufactures – the same can not be said for every other manufacturer.

4 out of 5 eggsUpdate to previous review

Pros: As stated this is an update to a previous review. After swapping the cards into each-others PCI-E slots and using the other connector on the card for crossfire and the other crossfire connector itself, these cards are stable at 1100/1500 with core voltage at 1.225 and memory voltage at 1.675. Aux voltage and power limit sliders are maxed and the "Force constant voltage" setting is set to on. I have absolutely no clue why changing the cards in which slots they are in/changing the connected crossfire links and the links themselves has to do with stability, but alas it works. Surprised that had anything to do with it but it works! Also, for those wanting to run eyefinity these things are amazing. 4 mini display ports=no screen tearing (google eyefinity screen tearing if you have no idea what I'm talking about). Also, these cards run pretty cool. They are also relatively quiet even at 100% fan speed. I don't actually run them at 100% fan speed but I wanted to see how loud they were. Master card runs at ~55 C when gaming while the slave card runs around ~47. Now that these cards are stable at the stock overclock of other vendors cards with no screen tearing, I would now reccommend this card.

Cons: Gave it a 4 out of 5 because of the hassles with the overclocking. No reason a crossfire bridge/crossfire connector on the card/or which slot either of the cards are in(I literally just swapped the slots between the two cards) should have any effect on stability. For some reason one of my cards didn't come with the dvi->hdmi adapter. I'm using all display ports so I don't really care, but just thought it was odd.

Other Thoughts: After fiddling with these things and changing some bizarre things, these things are stable at 1100/1500. They are NOT stable at 1150/1500 even with core voltage maxed. Truly can't get that high. However, these cards are quieter, cooler, and have the same clock(when overclocked) as the factory overclocked one for $449 as of today. The fact that these have atleast 3 (they have 4) mini-display ports is a no-brainer for eyefinity users. Would reccommend this product to friends now!

3 out of 5 eggsSo not it was made out to be...

Pros: Came on time. Thanks newegg! Also came back in stock recently... Can't say the same for the lightning! Was going to grab 2 lightnings and crossfire them, but MSI said they were discontinued when last e-mailed about them. So, I grabbed these instead.

Cons: First off, I contacted MSI about the differences of this product and the Lightning. The differences stated in the e-mail said no factory overclock (duh), and the cooler... The cooler is the EXACT same model so I was skeptical. Bought it anyway as the PCB was said to have lightning on it. See more.

Other Thoughts: So people have said that lightning was on the PCB and covered with a sticker... Meaning it should be RELATIVELY close to a lightning as far as performance/overclocking. However, upon installation, I booted up and got all the new drivers for it after getting rid of the drivers for my 6870's. Sad thing is, I can't even overclock this "overclocking enthusiasts" cards to STOCK lightning speeds. Shoot, the gigabyte 3 fan model is stock overclocked at 1100 MHZ core clock and 1500 on the memory. These "overlcocking enthusiasts" cards can't maintain 1050 on the core with the MSI afterburner core voltage, aux voltage, and power limit sliders MAXED. Very dissappointed in MSI for making the enthusiast gamers believe this card is "meant for overclockers." However, I was able to get the memory stable at 1400... Hooray for 25 extra Mhz? Anyway, I wanted to buy a pair of Lightning's and crossfire them, but they were said to be indefinitely out of stock by an MSI rep. Seeing as these cards are less than $10 bucks cheaper, I figured they'd be *close* to the same quality. Boy was I incorrect. Probably going to return these as they are definitely not as advertised as "overclocking enthusiasts" cards. Gave the review 3 eggs because they work at stock speeds *mutters overclocking enthusiasts and shakes head*

5 out of 5 eggsHD7970

Pros: Works great O/C to 1Ghz w/o issue - used afterburner to unlock voltage - not needed for above O/C - noticable performance increase over HD 6970 - 30-40 percent w/o overclock. Runs cool 28c idle - 56c maxed out. Has led's on the back of the card can be either good or bad - uses 2 8 pin power should help with overclocking. The 2 fan set-up is quiet.

Cons: Expensive - big card needs room.

Other Thoughts: Installed last night - needed somthing to do - glad I did -

2 out of 5 eggsBad card

Pros: Powerful card
Great cooler
Amazing looks

Cons: Died in 1 day. Called newegg and they payed for the return label. Didn't even have to leave my house to ship it as UPS came that day. Do yourself a favor and buy the lightning. Its cheaper and a thousand times better.

Other Thoughts: Could have been a great card but after some overclocking the card blew its memory somewhere. Memory was only OC'd 25mhz, but after that it stopped being able to function under any type of load, even using Windows 7 Aero.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat

Pros: Strong card.
Very overclockable
The details say 925mhz clock but mine is running 945mhz
Twin frozr is always a plus

Cons: The size is so large it almost didnt fit in my case. And it made wire management even harder with the psu I got. Getting some of the wires in place was a lot of work.

Other Thoughts: Its so far a great card. It has great overclocking ability according to a lot of sites and benches as high as a 6990 with an overclock. Thats twice as fast as the 6970.
