5 out of 5 eggsoutstanding TF4 cooling and linux support

Pros: Where to begin ...

- TF4 cools GPU to below 40C on adaptive VSync. Better yet, infrared images of TF4 in hardware.fr show most of the card below 50C with only isolated hot spots the size of GPU socket or VRM modules. Every other video card shows uniform high temps, same as GPU, through most of the card.

- stock speeds: I wanted 660 Ti performance with the best power consumption, temperatures and component lifetime. This card already gives 50% higher performance than my MSI 560 Ti O/C (21,000 FPS vs 14,600 FPS according to glxgears).

- superb nvidia linux support: I upgraded the nvidia drivers in preparation for buying this card and was pleasantly surprised with a 10% performance increase on the existing 560 Ti. [Got this card after RMA of a 7950 due to unstable and low-performing AMD linux drivers; lesson learned.].

- inaudible, even on boot I can't hear the famous reversed, dust-removing fan operation

- great improvement on my (already good) MSI 560 Ti O/C. High performance OpenGL apps like flightgear run at 45 - 60 FPS (card sync to VBlank) on adaptive VSync and 1920x1200 resolution. Could hit 60 without the adaptive VSync but that adds 10C to temps.

- outstanding pre-sales support from MSI, who explained that the POST problems mentioned in this card come from a BIOS that required GOP support and has now been replaced with an older BIOS. My card booted without problem, although I had a USB at the ready to change the BIOS.

Cons: - has 4 VRAM chips not covered by heatsink, 2 in front and 2 in back. Measured the temps on the ones in the back with an infrared thermometer and they got up to 45C. Some motherboard temps are in that range too but MSI could have sprung for a small heatsink for them. My TF2 560 Ti had no VRAM heatsinks at all and it didn't cause any problems, but why take the risk when the rest of the card is so beautifully engineered?

- 192 bit memory bus: understanding that the memory bus is all that separates this card from a 670, but this was too extreme, may hurt at high resolutions.

Other Thoughts: TF4 is a real accomplishment from a distinguished engineering team at MSI that has just outdone itself; there may never be a need for a TF5 now that GPUs are going to smaller manufacturing processes that result in cooler temperatures.

I really like this card and it will still be a sad day when I replace it with an MSI 860 Ti.

1 out of 5 eggsMSI's Caught Cheating

Pros: Hopefully a clever lawyer will pick up on the issue and get me a settlement check.

Cons: Constant video hardware errors cause the display driver to stop working and recover.

Tom's Hardware has an article about the issue titled "MSI Caught Overvolting GTX 660 Ti, 670 Power Edition Cards", which explains that MSI violated design specifications ultimately causing a chip to receive 9.3V instead of 5V. This huge overvoltage causes many to not get past POST, and others like me to have a completely unstable system.

Other Thoughts: You can see MSI's official response on their site, the page is titled "MSI Releases the statement for the test of GTX 660 Ti and GTX 670 from Tom's Hardware".

It is basically legal speak that says keep RMAing your card for the next 3 years.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

There are no issues with this product as it was intended in design.
If you believe that your product is defective, please proceed to file a warranty claim online.
http://service.msicomputer.com/msi_user/rma_form_new.aspx

1. MSI respects the result which is tested by Tom’s Hardware, but we have much confidence and believe our products would not cause any customer RMA concerns.
2. Since MSI designs these custom products with overclocking in mind, we “supercharge” these cards because we’re anticipating enthusiast to overclock. Because of this design decision and the higher component quality, we’re able to provide more power to the board resulting in higher and longer GPU Boost operation without reducing the lifetime of the graphics card or warranty term.
3. MSI’s all graphics cards including GTX 670 and GTX 660 Ti passed strict test and stand behind our products with a 3 year warranty.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding the product, please do not hesitate to contact us directly at usreview@msi.com and we will be more than happy to assist you, thank you.

5 out of 5 eggsIt plays everything.

Pros: I picked this card over the OC version because I didn't want overclocked. I wanted longevity and raw power. And this delivers.

Some people warned me against this card because it's only 192-bits. They said it might have issues with anti aliasing. But I play all of my games at the absolute highest settings. Crysis, Starcraft II, Skyrim, Borderlands II, Saints Row 3. They all run perfectly with no visible frame drops, and I turn anti aliasing all the way up.

I don't know how it will do with games in the next generation, but it works perfectly for games of this one. It has given me exactly zero compatibility issues. I love this card so much.

5 out of 5 eggsFantastic

Pros: This card has tons of power. I was deciding between this, and a GTX 670. I chose this because its cheaper to buy two, then SLI them together. By itself this thing can crush anything unless you play in higher res on ultra. The 2GB frame buffer is limiting on resolutions above 1080p, and the higher res texture an quickly fill the card, but if you had 2 of these, than nothing can really put too much of a damper on it. Granted, this card on its own is powerful, its still a lower level card, and not meant to play suround/3D and 250FPS, not to say it won't put up a fight. This card is geared to the mainstream consumer who likes games. The price point is nice, the power is grand, and the card runs cool. The TwinFrozer 4 cooler is really nice at cooling. There are others out there that cool slightly better, but the cooling on this card is more than adequat to overclock. Plus it really never gets dusty. I have had it sense last august, and have never cleaned it, its still clean. Great card.

Cons: The only thing i have had an issue with is the noise it makes when the fans are slightly off time. For those who have ever heard musical instruments tuning, its like two notes, but just off from each other. The card do get loud after they are overclocked, and if you have an intake fan pointed more at one fan on the card than the other, it will spin slightly faster. This causes the really annoying noise. Its probably just my ears and me picking something the complain about, but its just irritating when you have to change the case fan set up to balance out the pressure at the GPU. As far a sound overall, if you overclock too much, you will get a bit of coil wine, but if you back it off a bit, it will go away and run way more stable. The coil whine i have heard is a sign of instability from my experience over clocking this card. None of this is worth an egg, the card is too powerful to complain about a little noise most people won't notice.

Other Thoughts: Great card, great price, I need 2 or 3. MSI is a solid brand.

5 out of 5 eggsTri-monitors a go go.

Pros: It handles 3 monitor gaming fairly well at 5760*1920, however only on medium to high settings at stock clocks. Borderlands 2 takes a big hit on three monitors with PhysX set to High.

Temps keep low enough on load at about 55*C on Crysis 3
at 1920*1080 on max settings with 4xTXAA, at about 20FPS on average.

Cons: Not really a con, but the absence of an SLI bridge with the unit, although I can say that about any other card on the market.

Other Thoughts: Waiting for my second one to come in tomorrow. Going to have two of these in SLI to improve my performance, and possibly run Crysis 3 on three monitors (I doubt it though).

4 out of 5 eggsBest choice

Pros: I really like these card, very powerful, high quality product, I can play all my games maxed out, games with Xphysics looks like a deam. Also good for 3D animation. MSI Afterburner is so handy. Very capable to OC, these is the same thing as the OC version, don't spend more $. If you want to stick with 1 monitor with a resolution of 1920x1080 or below these card is the way to go.

Cons: Didn't fit in my case as well, I had to bend one bracket to make it hold the card and all these happened just because MSI put a piece of metal to reinforce the card. I got really disapointed about that experience, If it wassn't for that I would give 5 eggs.

4 out of 5 eggsGood Card

Pros: It's a fast card and pnp compatible with Mountain Lion.

Cons: READ THE SPECS! I bought this card assuming that both ports were DVI-D. There is only one DVI-D port, the other being DVI-A. This was my first MSI card (I usually buy Gigabyte and expected that all mfgr's had dual DVI-D). Maybe not a huge deal for others but for me with a multiple monitor setup and only DVI-D connections it was a pain. I ended up buying an additional HDMI->DVI-D pigtail from another supplier. I am going to plug in a 3rd and 4th monitor within a few weeks and will update my review on the performance.

Really MSI, is there a positive to having a single DVI-D connection on a 2GB card?

Other Thoughts: This is a lot of money to spend on a video card. Married to 32GB of RAM and an SSD drive seems to make a really good combo. Video editing is fast and flawless.

5 out of 5 eggsHappy

Pros: Timely shipping, Cooling, decent looking card, runs cool, can max every game. I.E, BF3 Arma 2 OA, EVE, ect. Ive only had this card for a little under a week and i love it. Cant beat the price vs performance. overall very happy with this card. Very quiet card.

Cons: Didnt take an egg off for this because i couldnt really care less. When you crank the fan speed to max, (just me testing things out, no specific reason to why i did it) the fans do sound like a 747 Jet Turbine spinning up. Personally i think it sounds kinda cool.

Other Thoughts: This is my first try with anything MSI. Im a Die hard EVGA fan. But unfortunetly this time i only had so much to spend and the EVGA was a little out of my price bracket. But i am very satisfied. This card takes less power to run then my old GTX 280. I strongly recommend this card to anyone who is on a budget and is looking for a card with a good price vs performance ratio. Thanks Newegg and MSI. Great product and great service like always.
