1 out of 5 eggsDisplayPort Fails Daily

Pros: Great performance per dollar at the Wattage I wanted, when it works.

Cons: The HDMI and DisplayPort outputs sometimes tear. The DisplayPort output fails daily (messed up lines on the screen), leading me to need to do a blind command prompt reboot / shutdown. All outputs fail simultaneously occasionally, leading me to have to do a hard power-down, essentially crashing the computer. When it does fail, it seems to happen when some type of video shows up when browsing (ad, youtube, etc.), though that is not the only time.

Other Thoughts: I'm not overclocking, I'm using the drivers that CCC wants me to use, and these monitors worked fine on my previous NVIDIA card. I did use driver tools to remove all traces of the NVIDIA drivers. I've combed some reviews, and I can't see others with the same problems, but I'm considering going back to NVIDIA, because I just didn't have these quirks.

5 out of 5 eggsawesome

Pros: upgraded from a gtx 460 and this is just leaps and bounds better. went from low settings on bf4 to high settings no lag with my mere core i3 sandybridge. stole this for $130 after rebate on black friday. great midrange card

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: in hindsight maybe should of gotten a 7950 for a few bucks more since it is a little more powerful, but i am still completely satisfied with this card

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Value (When on Sale)

Pros: Fans are quiet. Card runs cool.

Running on an AMD FX4100 (4 cores, 2 modules) (4.2ghz OC) and 16gb DDR3 1866 RAM (each at max settings 1920x1080 resolution):
Marvel Heroes - ~40 FPS with drops below 15 FPS (this game has some issues)
Neverwinter Online (No MSAA because it looks ugly) - ~20 FPS in Protector's Enclave
War Thunder (High Setting) - ~50 FPS
Star Trek Online - ~30 FPS
Batman Arkham City Benchmark - 59 FPS average 3 FPS minimum 102 FPS maximum
Star Citizen Hangar Module - Runs very smoothly with multiple ships in the Deluxe hangar including a Constellation 40-60 FPS (max due to V-sync) on high settings. On very high settings, FPS drops to 15-20.
Mechwarrior Online - ~30-50 FPS
Star Wars the Old Republic - 35-50 FPS at Vaiken Spacedock

Suffice to say, I have not had any trouble running modern games on rather high settings (not ultra settings or very high settings). 1920x1080 with 8x AA and 16x Anisotropic Texture Filtering is often doable with this card in many titles. Sometimes dropping to 4x AA and 8x Anisotropic Texture Filtering improves performance quite a lot. So, this is not an extremely high-end card. I would rate this card as med-high end.

I spent ~$145 on this card during Black Friday deals in 2013. For that price point, this card is a great value. As of writing this review, the price of this card is $179.99 and up. At the $180 price point, I would say that spending an extra $10-20 or more for a GeForce GTX 480, Radeon R9 270X, or a GeForce GTX 660 Ti would be a better option.

Cons: There are better cards that are slightly more expensive than the $180 price point.

Buy this card on sale and you will have gotten a great value.

5 out of 5 eggsBest GPU of winter 2013

Pros: + this was dirt cheap $150 + rebate winter 2013
+ Overclock-able... did you see that the GPU just winked ; )
+ performance/price vs re-brand r270 is about 6% less, OC your 7870ghz MSI to gpu-core1150 memory 1450 PowerControlSetting+20% & set fan to 45-50% with MSI afterburner or CCC. And you'll be about = for $50 dollars cheaper. (all depends on luck with OC performance)
+ plays all games I tested (steam 125games) on 1080p, Ultra shadows, High to Ultra Textures,& mixed AA settings (8xAA-Fxaa)@45-70FPS
+ Temps stay at 25-35C idle 54-59C Under Load with MSI Afterburner automatic fan control
30%pwr-40C slope
45%pwr-50C-65C
50%pwr 65C+

Cons: - Check your GPU for dust, I didn't when 1st installed it. I OC'd it & started getting artifacts. Turned OC off didn't help much. Then took a can of air... & man my GPU coughed up a hairball. MSI must have cats in their factory's.
- driver disk included is always garbage, ALWAYS download your drivers from Manufacturer MSI or AMD directly web site (you'll see up to a 15-30% FPS increase)
- GPU automatic fan control threw CCC wasn't working correctly. Card was overheating to 75C for the 1st couple hour's. Till I set up MSI afterburner's fan control.
- wanted a gtx 770, but being poor on a budget is my personal Con...lol
- not really a con but didn't know where to stick this info, @ 50% fan speed is when you say to yourself "I think my GPU is angry" it's loud from there on up.

Other Thoughts: Overall I m really happy with this GPU & think it'll last me 2-3 years. If I can fight off the urge to build another PC. MSI is a sexy company with great products & AMD didn't disappoint with this soon to be legendary GPU.
I really want to give this GPU a viking burial when it dies. = )

3 out of 5 eggsGreat card, rip-off rebate

Pros: I've been building computers for over ten years, and usually watch for great deals. Truly good rebate deals are more rare than several years ago, but they come along. This card is fantastic, and I would rate it a 5, except for the scam on the rebate.

Cons: I bought a Sapphire card at the same time, went down the checklist on both, etc, and applied. The Sapphire rebate was approved almost immediately, while this MSI rebate was rejected, claiming that I didn't send the invoice. I won't let an MSI rebate sway me again.

Other Thoughts: For several years, I never had problems with rebates, but it seems that the last few years I have to reapply more and more as they claim I left something out. Thankfully, I always copy everything, but it's getting much less pleasant dealing with it.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

We apologize for the issues that you are having with the rebate process.
You must follow instructions word by word by providing a valid invoice printed off Newegg's website (not the packing slip that was provided in the package), the UPC code cut from the product's box, the rebate document, and send out the mail promptly before deadline.
If you were denied, the rebate center would generally allow you to resubmit missing documents again, except if you had missed the deadline.

However, if you still have any issues with your rebate claim, then please contact us directly at usreview@msi.com and we will see what we can do for you.
Thank you.

1 out of 5 eggsDOA - now out of stock

Pros: nice price and good deal

Cons: DOA

Other Thoughts: I picked this up during BF and I finally got to installed it it would BSOD my computer. Put my 4870 back in no problems. Went to RMA/return for replacement, newegg was going to replacement then decided to refund me my money instead because they no longer have it in stock. Every other site I look at now has the same card over two fifty and I original got it for one fifty. Newegg didn't even call me and ask me what I wanted to do or email me saying we no longer have it in stock what would you like us to do. They could have sent me back the card and I would have RMA it to the manufacturer instead! At least then I could probably get the same card or something better and just pay a stupid shipping fee. Only time I will be buying from newegg now is whether its super cheap and willing to risk getting items being DOA and dealing with their return policy.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat graphics card

Pros: Runs spectacularly, stays incredibly cold (averaging 30-40 degrees cooler then my previous card, an msi 5770). After i tuned up my Athlon 2 x4 3.0 ghz cpu by unlocking the L3 cache, I was able to play Guild wars 2 on ultra high draw distance with all settings maxed in PvE for several hours at 35 fps or better.

Cons: when the card hits 48 degrees, it gets kinda loud. when it hits 49 degrees, it gets really loud. when it hits 50 degrees it gets RIDICULOUSLY loud. like. stupid loud. However, it USUALLY does not get above 43 degrees. DayZ on high graphics stays consistently warmer then 47 degrees but nothing else i play gets above 45, and below this temperature i have to look to see if my computer is on.

Other Thoughts: it is a big card. be warned if you have a small case. It also requires two pci power connectors, but comes provided with an adapter if you don't have that many like i don't. The card isn't a power sink though, I'm running a 430 watt power supply and have had no issues so far.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat video card for the money.

Pros: Huge graphics performance for the money. Bought two of these cards to run in crossfire. Both cards arrived in good shape and installation was easy.

Cons: With two cards in crossfire, the latest drivers from AMD, and stock fan settings, the top card routinely exceeds 70C when running graphics benchmarks and heavy gaming. The easiest fix I found is to enable graphics overdrive in CCC and set the fan speeds for both cards to 100% when running graphics intensive applications to keep the temperatures down. This could just be an issue for me because I am using a midsized case and everything is more compact.

Other Thoughts: I have purchased many MSI video cards starting with the GeForce 4 series. All the cards I have bought have been reasonably priced, performed flawlessly, and lasted me a very long time.
