1 out of 5 eggsGreat while it works

Pros: Quiet, Powerful, Stays Cool

Cons: Broken within three months, Poor quality RMA service

Other Thoughts: This card was great while it worked, but I've had it for less than three months and a component has already blown. Component C502 almost started a case fire in my case when it blew. Air flow was more than adequate as the case was open at the time and I had just started the computer up. My computer shut itself down one day and wouldn't start up again, so I started removing components to see which one was causing problems. The graphics card seemed to be the culprit since when I removed it, my computer started up. I had it out for a day, then decided to see if I put it back in if it would start again. That is when the component caught fire in my case.

This wouldn't be so bad, except that the RMA service seems to also be pretty bad. No customer service except on weekdays, which is fine, but what really gets me is that I am going to be sent a refurbished item and I have to pay for shipping! I paid almost $500 for this item, so the service could stand to be better than this. I'm really disappointed because I thought of MSI as a big company with good service, so I felt safe buying this card from them. Turns out I should have waited for another brand of non-reference 780's to go on sale.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome Card

Pros: Looks Good, performs even better. I've had nothing but joy overclocking this card, 1280Mhz clock and benches better than my buddy's 780ti (at stock speeds). Cool and quiet, even if fans are set at 100% its nothing when compared to similar AMD blower style coolers.

Picked it up for $584.99 and is worth every penny.

Cons: Card is big, the "GPU Reactor" on the back of the card is large enough that you may not be able to fit a card above this one. The cooler is also 2.5 slots tall so you cannot put a card next to it either. This effectively takes up 4 slots in your case....

The lighting couldve been a bit more coordinated, I mean, the is card itself is black and yellow, the "Lightning" logo glows green, and the LEDs on the backplate are bright blue.

BIOS flash is required for a decent OC, not worth taking an egg off though (see below)

Other Thoughts: The stock BIOS comes with a slight overclock, which you are not going to be using anyways, the LN2 BIOS that is "fully unlocked" is in fact locked down as well. I had to flash the BIOS in order to bump voltages etc. Still, MSI shouldnt market this as an enthusiast OC card while having these restrictions...

1 out of 5 eggsforget about lightning!

Pros: The cooler looks cool, just "looks" . Backplate? Really hard to find any real pros.

Cons: 1. Unnecessarily big and heavy
2. Really poor quality control
3. poor OC ability

Other Thoughts: When I decided to buy this card, I had so much expectation on it. It turned out to be a total disappointment.

Started from mid Dec, I have already replace four 780 Lightning. Sounds ridiculous, right? I am not that kind of picky customers, but they are beyond my tolerance.

All these four cards, all of them come with a bent PCB at one end. I don't know what MSI did to these PCB. I dont know if they could cause any real problems but at least, it looks not good.

The first and second card both come with a defective fan, one that constantly making strange noise due to bad centering. The third card is fine as for fans, but several fins of the heatsink are so loose that they vibrate and making even more annoying noise.

And I have no idea why MSI make the cooler so big and heavy. It doesn't provide much better effect compared to EVGA or Gigabyte, but it made a 3-way and 4- way SLI impossible! And the weight causes the card bent and tilted so much downward, definitely something discomforting

The worst part is the OC ability. I know for sure you are gonna mention the DrMOS, the power supply, the Ferrite Core blablabla, but none of these makes any sense if they wouldn't result in a higher clock!! Nobody can get a good OC clock with bad quality chips. The chips, are the critical part, but MSI seems just pick them randomly, maybe even worse?

All of these four cards could not reach 1280Mhz with voltage adjusted to the max. I've read more than 3 review articles on this card, they all got 1300+ core clock. The only explanation I can think of is MSI chose good quality cards and sent them for review or professional OC competition, and leave the plain ones for customers.

The first card and the fourth one have just a ASIC ~ 66%, I never knew NV chips could have such low ASIC chip. AND THEY DID OC REALLY AWFUL! neither can get above 1240 stably, which I believe is no more than any reference 780 in the market. The 3rd card, to my surprise, comes with an ASIC of 88%! But actually can just hit 13MHz higher than those two. The last one, oh dear, couldn't even stand on 1215.

And of course the memory oc sucks more because they are Elpida's. Don't explain to me it's a requirement by NV, because I know Gigabyte and EVGA and other companies they do sell samsung ones, now! Lightning should be the best of its series, but MSI is not even willing to use better memory chips.I am so confused.

Perhaps it's just my bad luck to get these defective and bad OC cards while some get a great one on their first purchase. But I've replace 3 times and I am totally done with it! I'll live with this one that OCs worse than a reference one. But I'll never buy any MSI graphic cards, ever.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

N780 Lightning is designed for customers to enjoy overclocking and is targeted at achieving world records. MSI R&D made top efforts on the design of the card to allow it to overclock well in a well-prepared environment. The TriFrozr design offers a cooling solution with three PWM fans that can be independently controlled. The architecture also includes an all-digital PWM control and triple level signals to show loading using different colors. The primary BIOS is tuned for gaming performance out of the box, while the other one is specifically tuned and unlocked for LN2 overclocking. In addition, the card has 16 GPU phases of power and three memory phases, and the ability to add a “GPU Reactor” behind the GPU for more overclocking stability. Moreover, N780 Lightning equips with MSI’s Military Class 4 components, consisting of DrMOS 4, CopperMOS, Hi-c CAP, Super Ferrite Core, and Dark Solid Caps.

As far as default speed is concerned, it is because the default BIOS aims to stability and reliability for users to enjoy gaming. However, MSI will take customer advice to build a new BIOS with higher clock speeds. Once verified by Nvidia then it will become available on MSI website for customers to download and enjoy. For your information, EVGA N780 is also equipped with ELIPDA memory. Please kindly refer to the links below for pictures on an EVGA N780.

Finally, MSI has designed the card from the ground-up to face well-prepared overclocking environment through its unique FAN control feature, more power phases, GPU Reactor and Military class components.
Please kindly take a look at the HWBOT link below:
http://hwbot.org/submission/2422852

ASIC is only a reference and can be controlled due to voltage regulation required by Nvidia Green Light.
Let us know if you have any questions, thank you.

5 out of 5 eggsMsi 780 Lightning

Pros: This card is quiet and fast. Max temps I have seen have -been 65 C. This thing is really big, I have one stuffed inside a Cooler Master Haf 932. So far this card has about 50 hours of Battlfield 4 on it. On stock clocks with maxed out game settings including msaa enabled, this card averages 85 to 90 fps. I have overclocked this card slightly and have seen frame rates increase about 10 to 15 percent to average around 100fps. All on a 1920 1080 120hz monitor.

Cons: Heavy, puts stress on pci express slot.

Other Thoughts: This card eats everything I throw at it. Has a dual bios, so you can tweak the voltages a little.

5 out of 5 eggsAll the power I've craved

Pros: Very powerful card with a non-reference cooler. Overclocks very well (currently have my boost clock running at 1280 MHz, and a friend can only get to 1228 with an EVGA Superclocked 780 no matter how hard he tries) and stays cool (<70C) under load. LED indicators are nice, but usually you won't be paying attention to it. Massive heatsink really helps with cooling, and the two larger fans are very quiet. The packaging was definitely well-done and should keep the card very safe, and I definitely appreciate it.

Cons: One problem is the fan control software doesn't have any options to save settings, so the center fan tends to get a little noisy after having the card under load. Not enough to dock an egg though. Also, Nvidia restricting Kepler cards' power limits and voltage is really holding this card back, but that's not MSI's fault.

Other Thoughts: If you're considering whether the $50 premium over any standard GTX 780 is worth it, and it's within your budget, I'd say get it. This card can really put up some heavy clocks, high details, and a lot of FPS. With how well this card's doing on air, I'm tempted to get a waterblock for it and see what it can do.

1 out of 5 eggsDon't buy this.

Pros: Looks sexy.

Cons: Only was able to get +100 on the core before it began to become unstable and crash.

After 2 weeks the card became defective and started to not project any images on my monitor. The fans would also hit full speed at start up which never used to happen.

Other Thoughts: I really tried to like the card but it was just a disappointment from the start. Crashed multiple times in the Witcher 2, Tomb Raider, and Bioshock Infinite just to name a few. Buy another brand.

5 out of 5 eggsUnleash a Practical Beast!

Pros: Some of the best Bang-for-the-buck if you get it on Sale.
Gorgeous construction quality
Top-notch componentry throughout
Quiet, while kicking comparable GPU's backsides...

Cons: If you had to pay MSRP - some recent arrivals may offer better value.

However, I got this baby for low $5C and have only begun to explore the limits of what it can do on my 1080i Monitor.

Other Thoughts: Did A LOT of research and this GPU consistently gets great reviews on nearly all of the sites that I trust.

I was blown-away by how dang HUGE the box that it came-in was (inner hard-box is like a jewelry case...) - it was bigger and weighed about twice of what my Standard ITX Mobo box weighed...

Looking forward to many years of enjoyable use with my new toy!
