Advanced Twin Frozr IV

MSI's Twin Frozr has been the industry defining graphics card cooler. The first Twin Frozr kicked off the dual-fan trend and today MSI stays true to its dual-fan dual-slot design where others have to resort to less effective means.

The other part that the Twin Frozr cooler uses is a large Aluminium fin grid array that provides a huge amount of surface area for cooling. Heat from the GPU is transferred to the fin grid array by virtue of heat pipes with MSI's special SuperPipe technology. SuperPipes transfer heat twice as fast as regular heat pipes enabling an MSI Gaming graphics card to stay cooler than the competition's.

Furthermore, MSI provides all new Airflow Control technology on the Twin Frozr. This new thermal technology leads air to the heat pipe by a special deflector on the heatsink, so it can direct more air to heat pipes directly. In addition, this exclusive heatsink design increases the area of the heatsink so as to increase the efficiency of heat dissipation.

Military Class Component

One of the deciding factors in performance is the quality of the components used. That is why MSI only uses MIL-STD-810G certified components for its Gaming cards because only these components have proven to be able to withstand the torturous circumstances of extreme gaming and overclocking.

Solid Capacitors

With their aluminum core design, solid cap's have been a staple in high-end mainboard designs and provide lower Equivalent Series Resistance (ESR) as well as an over-10-year lifespan.

R9 290X GAMING 4G

Hi-C Cap

A Hi-C Cap is a very small but super-efficient capacitor. Besides ensuring enough spacing around a CPU socket to install large coolers, it also allows for 93% energy efficiency. Thanks to Hi-C CAP's, MSI mainboards are the most energy efficient on the market.

R9 290X GAMING 4G

Solid State Choke

It's a new generation, form-in-one choke, which doesn't generate vibration noise under heavy loading & provides 37.5% higher current output compared with a traditional ring choke. It's very important when your GPU is overclocked or under high loads, since it requires even more electricity - provided by this component.

Experience Predator

Share for Fun

A built-in screen and video capturing tool named Predator captures your screen as still images or videos with the push of a button and allows you to capture and record your coolest, goofiest, and most awesome gaming moments on your PC!

Afterburner

MSI Afterburner has quickly become the favorite overclocking software for media, overclockers, and end-users. Because of its simple interface, it's easy to learn, but it packs a lot of powerful features like an integrated benchmark utility called Kombustor that can check your system performance in benchmarking mode, or run as a stability test.

Don't speak English? No problem: MSI Afterburner is translated in many languages including Russian, Spanish, Chinese and Korean! Not satisfied with the looks? Just change to one of the many different skins or create one yourself with ease!

Even better, you can run Afterburner straight from your smartphone! Download the MSI Afterburner App from Google Play or the Apple store and start overclocking.

1 out of 5 eggsLOW FPS

Pros: Looks cool

Cons: VERY low fps. I expected a card in this price range to handle games on high settings with out a problem. I guess I was wrong.

Other Thoughts: I already wrote a review on this product but I guess we can not reply or edit them? I updated my BIOs and my drivers. The issue is not my rig. It's the card. I don't think I'll be purchasing from MSI ever again.

Manufacturer Response:

1 out of 5 eggsLOW FPS

Pros: Looks cool

Cons: Over priced for starters. This card performs at about the rate of a 90$ card at best. Running ESO at about 30fps at times. Lower in town. For a card of this price range I expect AT LEAST 60fps. Cards that cost less than half of this perform WAY better. And no it's not my cpu. 8 core processor clocked at 4.4. I'm about to go back to my GTX 660.

Other Thoughts: I've spent hours and hours trying to figure out why this card is so bad. I can't manage to fix it.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat for games

Pros: Run a lot of games on maximum graphics with little framerate drops on monitors below 4k

Cons: can be loud when used over long periods (though not as loud as many other brands) , the box says that its 4k ready but I've tried playing some games with it on 4k and it takes quite a hit...if you are trying to play with 4k make sure to drop your graphical settings a bit or buy two of these cards.

Other Thoughts: Don't hesitate to buy this one if your trying to game on a budget!

1 out of 5 eggsBad Card

Pros: The specs on this card are great, I have just had a horrible experience.

Cons: To start, I ordered this card back in mid-February. The card came no problem. No dents, scratches on the box. Pure mint condition. I go to install the GPU and things were working fine until my computer started to restart itself. Out of nowhere, a random restart would occur. Even if my PC was at idle. I ran FurMark for up to 15 mins at maximum load and got the card up 91 Degrees C. After that I would go onto google Chrome and boom. Prompted a restart. I took my computer and gpu to a computer repair shop so they could run some tests on it. They found the card to be faulty. I went through the RMA process and gave a brief description of what had happened. The RMA was accepted and I got my new GPU only a few weeks later. After receiving the NEW gpu, I didn't open the box (which, again arrived in mint condition) and just brought my computer to the computer shop and said "here, you guys install it this time." They did, and they encountered the same problem. I even bought a new PSU (CX 750M) to ensure there wasn't a power drain. I come back to she shop a few days later, and the same problem persisted. THEN I asked them to do a clean install. My HDD was completely wiped (i didn't have much on there at all) and they still encountered the same problem. The shop ran RAM tests and video stress tests and all were fine. Until they booted up Chrome. I am writing this review the day of returning to the shop for them to tell me that it is a bad card. They put my old GPU in (HIS R9 270x) and the same tests, and everything was in the clear. Getting two bad cards in a row? Thats just awful luck.

Other Thoughts: From the hour or so of playtime that I got out of the card, it was fantastic. I just wish I didn't get two bad cards in a row. Now, I can't RMA it because it was being examined by a computer store.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Card

Pros: Can run any battle field in ultra setting. Can run most games in 120 fps. Supports up to 4 monitors all running at 1080p.

Cons: A bit expensive and doesn't support 4k resolution.

Other Thoughts: Would recommend this card to average gamers looking for some thing great but no going to break the bank.

4 out of 5 eggsAwesome Card, But.....

Pros: Great R9 290X card. Nice to look at, great fit and finish.

Truly a beast. Crushes *anything* at 1080p.

I was really happy with even 4K gaming, but I was not playing any really demanding titles. When I started playing Shadow of Mordor, I decided it was time for a second one of these cards....

Cons: If you want to go really high end on a single card, the 8GB version of this card is currently $10 more. How could you not?

If you want a crossfire setup, and already have this unit, the r9 290 in this line is very close to as good for a current $100 less.

If you are looking for two cards for crossfire, you can get very nearly as good for $620 total at current pricing.

Please see my review for the MSI Gaming R9 290 4GB card; if you want a value proposition.

Other Thoughts: Bottom line: this is a truly awesome card, but the pricing is so irrational that I cannot recommend buying at the current time.

I docked it one egg only for the lack of value. If this card goes back to the mid three hundreds, it is a strong buy.

4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Excellent quality. Low fan noise. great performance.

Cons: MSI CD installed a lot of software for an MSI (only) motherboard

Other Thoughts: disappointment about the rebate and for the 1st time Newegg delivery. This was shipped from california to the east coast. took well over a week to be delivered. plus I travel a lot for business. So by the time I got into actual assemble, the rebate, which was tied to the purchase date, had expired by 2 days .
Lesson learned

5 out of 5 eggsRebate ripoff - otherwise good card

Pros: The card is very quiet and drives my 27" 2560 x 1440 LCD nicely. I get solid 40-60 fps in WoW. Not a single hiccup, nothing bad to say about it except rebate ripoff. To early to say about reliability and the dreaded leaky fans are yet to go bad.
My PC is near silent, and this card can only be heard in Gaming with the Sound on mute. It produces background like humming noise. Most Power supplies will be louder. My case is always opened as this is the way I can hear things/fans before they go bad.
I have to praise MSI for near silent design on this one. Even during benchmarks it remains very quiet.

Cons: Rebate ripoff, do not even count on it. MSI gives you measly time to send it in. You have less then a week after it arrives at you door step. What a bunch of marketing crooks... deceiving people in such way is very low indeed.

Other Thoughts: I am still disappointed how 'slow' it is on 2560 x 1440, this is not a complaint I am just being stupefied how much power you need to drive the latest 4k and the like screens...

Would I buy it again - not entirely sure... I wish I stayed with my 24" 1920x1080 LCD and R7870 that gave me same frame rate but it did hiccup a bit.

On the other hand, WoW looks all but amazing on 27" 2560 x 1440 in max settings. Cartoon'ish it is still, but it's the only game I play right now and I kinda like the looks of it.

1 out of 5 eggsGoood card, deceptive rebate

Pros: Card seems to work great running BioShock Infinite and other games with demanding graphics on Ultra while still maintaining 50-60fps. After extended play sessions I sometimes notice an FPS drop but this may be a heat problem, I'm still investigating.

Cons: I purchased this card solely because it had a significant rebate and a promotion that made it the best value for the price. Without that heavy rebate, I would have ordered the (slightly better but more expensive) GTX 970. Little did I know that the rebate, unlike the 6 or so other rebates I obtained for the other parts for my computer, was only valid 15 DAYS after purchase. In other words, the manufacturer expects the customer to have all the other parts arrive, have built their computer, have tested out performance, and have filled out and sent the rebate paperwork all within that period.

Yes, I acknowledge my own responsibility in not checking the terms of the rebate and assuming it was the same as others. That is my fault. But to have a rebate with HALF the eligibility period as every other rebate I've seen is just bad practice. I normally wouldn't care too much but when that rebate means the difference between buying THIS product and a competitor's product, I think it matters.

It's a shame, because without this "gotcha" feeling of shady business I would otherwise be a very satisfied customer. Now instead I'm seriously doubting ever purchasing from the same manufacturer again.

Manufacturer Response:

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Card

Pros: Great Card

Cons: MSI denied my rebate. I will not trust them to do any thing they say. I like the equipment, just disgusted with their customer service or lack there of.

Other Thoughts: Read the instructions carefully and you won't get burned.
