The Radeon R9 290, the AMD's new flagship GPU, offers the weapon of choice for gamers who demand the best. It's based on the new 28nm Hawaii GPU architecture and introduces the support for DirectX 11.2, capable of rendering reality-redefining imagery in the hottest titles. With a massive number of stream processors and a gigantic 4GB GDDR5 memory, this GPU delivers the performance you need for smooth gameplay at extreme settings. The new CrossFire technology allows you to build a multiple graphics cards configuration without the use of interconnect bridges. With Ultra Resolution Gaming, you'll leave HD in the dust by gaming on displays much, much larger. A rich set of AMD innovative technologies are included, such as App Acceleration, AMD PowerTune, AMD ZeroCore, and AMD HD3D technology. With these technology advancements, you'll get more than one way to elevate your gaming experience.

Coupled with the R9 290X is advanced MSI technologies. This MSI Gaming VGA Card comes equipped with custom Twin Frozr cooling, military class components for better stability, and features OC mode, allowing you to unleash the full potential with the press of a button.

  • newegg ADVANCED TWIN FROZR IV MSI's Twin Frozr has been the industry-defining graphics card cooler. The first Twin Frozr kicked of the dual-fan trend and today MSI stays true to its dual-fan dual-slot design, where others have to resort to less effective means. The other part that the Twin Frozr cooler uses is a large aluminum fin grid array that provides a huge amount of surface area for cooling. Heat from the GPU is transferred to the fin grid array by virtue of heat pipes with MSI's special SuperPipe technology. SuperPipes transfer heat twice as fast as regular heat pipes, enabling an MSI GAMING graphics card to stay cooler than the competition. Furthermore, MSI provides all-new Airflow Control technology on Twin Frozr. This new thermal technology leads the airflow to the heat pipe by a special deflector on the heatsink, so it can deflect more airflow to the heat pipes directly.
  • newegg MILITARY CLASS COMPONENT One of the deciding factors in performance is the quality of the components used. That is why MSI only uses MIL-STD-810G certified components for its gaming cards, because only these components have proven to be able to withstand the torturous circumstances of extreme gaming and overclocking. SOLID CAP - One With their aluminum core design, Solid CAPs have been a staple in high-end design mainboard designs, and provide lower Equivalent Series Resistance (ESR) and an over-10-year lifespan. Hi-C CAP - A Hi-c CAP is a very small, but super-efficient capacitor. Besides ensuring enough spacing, it also allows for 93% energy efficiency. NEW SUPER FERRITE CHOKES - New Super Ferrite Chokes use a ferrite core that is super-permeable. This allows the super ferrite chokes to run at a 35°C lower temperature, have a 30% higher current capacity, a 20% improvement in power efficiency and better overclocking power stability.
  • newegg GAMING APP A lightweight, easy to use OC tool, the Gaming App allows you to switch between OC Mode, Gaming Mode, and Silent Mode with the press of a button. Each mode has individual pre-defined Base Clock and Boost Clock to meet different play scenarios.
  • newegg EXPERIENCE - PREDATOR A built-in screen and video capturing tool named Predator captures your screen as still images or videos with the push of a button. So you can capture and record your coolest, goofiest, and most awesome gaming moments on your PC!
  • newegg AFTERBURNER MSI Afterburner has quickly become the favorite overclocking software for media, overclockers, and end users. Because of its simple interface, it's easy to learn, but it packs a lot of powerful features, like an integrated benchmark utility called Kombustor that can check your system performance in benchmarking mode, or run as a stability test. Don't speak English? No problem: MSI Afterburner is translated in many languages, including Russian, Spanish, Chinese, and Korean! Not satisfied with the looks? Just change to one of the many different skins, or create one yourself with ease! Even better, you can run Afterburner straight from your smartphone! Download the MSI Afterburner App from Google Play or the Apple store.
  • newegg New Generation of CrossFire The card features next-generation CrossFire support for up to four graphics cards with no interconnect bridge required.

1 out of 5 eggsMSI R9 290

Pros: Item worked flawlessly for about 20 minutes.
- Constant system crashes
- Incompatible drivers
- Pure headache while building a new system

Cons: Not sure if this is a design flaw or just a bad batch of cards, but their seems to be a lot of issues in regards to this card. After having my system lock up every ten minutes, I pulled the card and just used the onboard video, no more issues. Sent Newegg the card for RMA, hopefully this new card works like it's supposed to. Hopefully I don't regret this decision, maybe I should have went with NVIDIAS two new flagship GPUs.

5 out of 5 eggsEyefinity Win

Pros: Active display port adapter not required for Eyefinity.
Experienced Eyefinity consumer (6048 x 1080) since the HD 5870 - then crossfired 6870s - now this.
By far the best investment made in a while.

Cons: none so far.
Other reviews state that heat is an issue, but have yet to witness it myself.

Other Thoughts: Active adapter not required for Eyefinity 3x1
No heat issues (two weeks, many games)

1 out of 5 eggsUpdated review

Pros: It's fast inside a 3D application till it black screens.

Cons: I have tried multiple bios, many drivers, tweaking settings in afterburner (like forcing certain voltages and speeds), etc. and have had no luck resolving my black screen issues. The card just isn't stable, especially in anything other than its very highest power state (crashes all the time on the desktop).
This is a very well complained about issue online, with no clear solution. Other cards work fine in my system and this card has this issue in other systems.
There are lots of "oh just do this and your problem will go away" posts but there is no solution that works for my card, and I have full confidence that if I mail my card in for RMA, all I will accomplish is wasting postage money and my time, and in several weeks back I'll get my card back with a "WORKS FINE" sticker on it. This seems to be a R9 290 design flaw, and not necessarily MSI's fault, but it is awful to have a piece of hardware in your system that is just unstable by design.

Other Thoughts: There's the usual manufacturer damage control responses in this thread, but I've tried that email and after the initial scripted response asking for my details, that email hasn't given any response for over a month. So my "other thoughts" are that here I am, with a piece of faulty hardware and no recourse. I can RMA this expensive piece of instability and have it replaced with something that's probably got the same problem, or I can sell it used at a large loss and buy an nVidia that won't black screen several times an hour when trying to read email.

1 out of 5 eggsWould be a great card if it would stop locking up my system

Pros: Card ran games well when it actually would run them for the whole few minutes before it'd crash and completely lock up my system. It was even running chrome and word well before it decided that opening iTunes on top of that was too extreme and therefor seized up my system.

Cons: I'm not too sure if it's a bad card or not, but here's what happened (everything was fine before installing this card): Uninstalled drivers for the Radeon HD 6950 I had, shut down PC, removed old card, installed R9 290, started PC, installed new drivers for new card, reboot, login, display driver crashes multiple times, reboot a few more times, random freezes, tried 3 different driver versions (none of which worked and still resulted in intermittent full system lockups where a hard reboot had to be done every time), updated mobo bios to latest version, removed & re-added display driver in device manager, forced constant voltage and disabled ULPS in MSI afterburner, underclocked/reset default clocks on card, changed PCI-E frequency to 100, 120, 150 in bios; returned CPU to default clock speeds, tried multiple power cables and ports (running XFX 750Watt PSU which should be enough power), tried both bios switches on card still getting random full lock ups/freezes either in games or on my desktop at idle. Safe to say that I'm done trying things after two days of tweaks and tons of crashes later. Re-installed 6950 with latest drivers and it works flawlessly.

Other Thoughts: System specs:

Processor: AMD Phenom X6 1100T 3.3ghz
RAM: 4 2gb Corsair 1333mhz DDR3 RAM (8gb total)
HDD: 60gb SSD, 3tb, 1tb, 500gb HDD's
Mobo: ASUS M4A88TD-V Evo/USB 3.0
PSU: XFX 750watt
Video (old/current): MSI Radeon HD 6950 (Twin Frozr III, 2gb)

I was hoping for this to work well as my old 6950's replacement but unfortunately this card keeps constantly locking up my machine at random intervals that require hard reboots to fix. Calling newegg about an RMA. Hopefully I can get a replacement card that works.

Manufacturer Response:

Pros: price, easy setup, graphics make all my games look 10x better from my last machine, well built

Cons: puts out some heat in case not sure if video card or power supply or mobo/cpu not risking overclocking had to turn overclocking off it got so warm in my steel tower

Other Thoughts: Very satisfied with card would buy again.

3 out of 5 eggsThe cards work great seperate

Pros: Both cards I have (290 & 290X) work well on any game I throw at them. They are monsters.

Cons: My first 290 had to be returned because of leaking oil from the fans, meaning the barrings were not tight enough... Why does this happen to me?

Other Thoughts: I cannot get CrossfieX to work on newer drivers past 13.11 CCC. I have tried everything, and CCC just does not want to have CFX enabled after 13.11 with these two MSI cards.

1 out of 5 eggsPoor service and black screens

Pros: Card is fast when it's working

Cons: Card black screens when transitioning between low power states. This means it crashes sometimes when you close a game or tab out to look at a web browser, and it can't be recovered without a full power cycle (hard reset won't get it).

Other Thoughts: Their tech support page is broken. When I try to fill it out in chrome, one of the fields that is marked "required" is not editable and the submit button doesn't do anything. I can only surmise that the process gets pretty ugly if they can't even craft a functioning web form to collect information on my problem. I suspect I could benefit from a different bios, but I don't have a good way to ask MSI if they have an official one for me to try so I have to play around with 3rd party stuff.

5 out of 5 eggsStraight Forward Review!

Pros: Benchmarks I Ran On This Card (Everything Maxed Out)

Grid Auto Sport - 60 Avg FPS - 82c Max Heat
Thief - 66 Avg FPS - 88c Max Heat
Tomb Raider - 42 Avg FPS - 92c Max Heat
Just Cause 2 - 58 Avg FPS - 82c Max Heat
Company of Heroes - 36 Avg FPS - 80c Max Heat

Cons: As you can see above this card gets HOT! (In Skyrim and other less demanding games it stays around 65c)
Demands ALOT of power 350-400 watts
Needs one 8 pin power connector and one 6 pin (I would have like to have two of the same but its not a big deal)

Other Thoughts: I have this paired up with a FX-8320 and Corsair Vengeance RAM, my case is a corsair Air 540 so i have great cooling.

I upgraded from a Asus 7870 Crossfire setup and this card is anywhere from -5% to 35% Better or worse, depending on the game.

4 out of 5 eggsGood Upgrade

Pros: -Maxes out every game I own. But this is at 1440x900. I need to get a new monitor but this card should still max out my games @ 1080p.
-BF4 w/ ultra settings @ 80-100+ FPS

-Worry free installation
-MSI's cooler looks pretty cool
-No artifacts or any other graphic issues(@ stock settings)

Cons: -This thing gets hot. I'm running MSI afterburner with a fan speed curve.
-Idles @ 45-55 C
-Around 72-75 C when playing games like BF4
-With Kombuster stress test, temps shoot up to high 80s C
-Fan is quite loud at 100% but it usually doesn't get that high under normal gaming

-Card is heavy and I worry a bit about it sagging in my computer

Other Thoughts: -Get 4/5 eggs b/c of heat. I know these 290s get hot but I would like to see temps be 10C cooler.

-I wanted to get the ASUS version of this card but it wouldn't fit in my case. This MSI card fits perfectly and it isn't much different from ASUS' cooler.

-I had to buy a new PSU for this card(corsair RM750)

-I'm extremely happy with this card and it is like night and day coming from a HD7770
