The Radeon R9 290, the AMD's new flagship GPU, offers the weapon of choice for gamers who demand the best. It's based on the new 28nm Hawaii GPU architecture and introduces the support for DirectX 11.2, capable of rendering reality-redefining imagery in the hottest titles. With a massive number of stream processors and a gigantic 4GB GDDR5 memory, this GPU delivers the performance you need for smooth gameplay at extreme settings. The new CrossFire technology allows you to build a multiple graphics cards configuration without the use of interconnect bridges. With Ultra Resolution Gaming, you'll leave HD in the dust by gaming on displays much, much larger. A rich set of AMD innovative technologies are included, such as App Acceleration, AMD PowerTune, AMD ZeroCore, and AMD HD3D technology. With these technology advancements, you'll get more than one way to elevate your gaming experience.

Coupled with the R9 290X is advanced MSI technologies. This MSI Gaming VGA Card comes equipped with custom Twin Frozr cooling, military class components for better stability, and features OC mode, allowing you to unleash the full potential with the press of a button.

  • newegg ADVANCED TWIN FROZR IV MSI's Twin Frozr has been the industry-defining graphics card cooler. The first Twin Frozr kicked of the dual-fan trend and today MSI stays true to its dual-fan dual-slot design, where others have to resort to less effective means. The other part that the Twin Frozr cooler uses is a large aluminum fin grid array that provides a huge amount of surface area for cooling. Heat from the GPU is transferred to the fin grid array by virtue of heat pipes with MSI's special SuperPipe technology. SuperPipes transfer heat twice as fast as regular heat pipes, enabling an MSI GAMING graphics card to stay cooler than the competition. Furthermore, MSI provides all-new Airflow Control technology on Twin Frozr. This new thermal technology leads the airflow to the heat pipe by a special deflector on the heatsink, so it can deflect more airflow to the heat pipes directly.
  • newegg MILITARY CLASS COMPONENT One of the deciding factors in performance is the quality of the components used. That is why MSI only uses MIL-STD-810G certified components for its gaming cards, because only these components have proven to be able to withstand the torturous circumstances of extreme gaming and overclocking. SOLID CAP - One With their aluminum core design, Solid CAPs have been a staple in high-end design mainboard designs, and provide lower Equivalent Series Resistance (ESR) and an over-10-year lifespan. Hi-C CAP - A Hi-c CAP is a very small, but super-efficient capacitor. Besides ensuring enough spacing, it also allows for 93% energy efficiency. NEW SUPER FERRITE CHOKES - New Super Ferrite Chokes use a ferrite core that is super-permeable. This allows the super ferrite chokes to run at a 35°C lower temperature, have a 30% higher current capacity, a 20% improvement in power efficiency and better overclocking power stability.
  • newegg GAMING APP A lightweight, easy to use OC tool, the Gaming App allows you to switch between OC Mode, Gaming Mode, and Silent Mode with the press of a button. Each mode has individual pre-defined Base Clock and Boost Clock to meet different play scenarios.
  • newegg EXPERIENCE - PREDATOR A built-in screen and video capturing tool named Predator captures your screen as still images or videos with the push of a button. So you can capture and record your coolest, goofiest, and most awesome gaming moments on your PC!
  • newegg AFTERBURNER MSI Afterburner has quickly become the favorite overclocking software for media, overclockers, and end users. Because of its simple interface, it's easy to learn, but it packs a lot of powerful features, like an integrated benchmark utility called Kombustor that can check your system performance in benchmarking mode, or run as a stability test. Don't speak English? No problem: MSI Afterburner is translated in many languages, including Russian, Spanish, Chinese, and Korean! Not satisfied with the looks? Just change to one of the many different skins, or create one yourself with ease! Even better, you can run Afterburner straight from your smartphone! Download the MSI Afterburner App from Google Play or the Apple store.
  • newegg New Generation of CrossFire The card features next-generation CrossFire support for up to four graphics cards with no interconnect bridge required.

5 out of 5 eggsStraight Forward Review!

Pros: Benchmarks I Ran On This Card (Everything Maxed Out)

Grid Auto Sport - 60 Avg FPS - 82c Max Heat
Thief - 66 Avg FPS - 88c Max Heat
Tomb Raider - 42 Avg FPS - 92c Max Heat
Just Cause 2 - 58 Avg FPS - 82c Max Heat
Company of Heroes - 36 Avg FPS - 80c Max Heat

Cons: As you can see above this card gets HOT! (In Skyrim and other less demanding games it stays around 65c)
Demands ALOT of power 350-400 watts
Needs one 8 pin power connector and one 6 pin (I would have like to have two of the same but its not a big deal)

Other Thoughts: I have this paired up with a FX-8320 and Corsair Vengeance RAM, my case is a corsair Air 540 so i have great cooling.

I upgraded from a Asus 7870 Crossfire setup and this card is anywhere from -5% to 35% Better or worse, depending on the game.

4 out of 5 eggsGood Upgrade

Pros: -Maxes out every game I own. But this is at 1440x900. I need to get a new monitor but this card should still max out my games @ 1080p.
-BF4 w/ ultra settings @ 80-100+ FPS

-Worry free installation
-MSI's cooler looks pretty cool
-No artifacts or any other graphic issues(@ stock settings)

Cons: -This thing gets hot. I'm running MSI afterburner with a fan speed curve.
-Idles @ 45-55 C
-Around 72-75 C when playing games like BF4
-With Kombuster stress test, temps shoot up to high 80s C
-Fan is quite loud at 100% but it usually doesn't get that high under normal gaming

-Card is heavy and I worry a bit about it sagging in my computer

Other Thoughts: -Get 4/5 eggs b/c of heat. I know these 290s get hot but I would like to see temps be 10C cooler.

-I wanted to get the ASUS version of this card but it wouldn't fit in my case. This MSI card fits perfectly and it isn't much different from ASUS' cooler.

-I had to buy a new PSU for this card(corsair RM750)

-I'm extremely happy with this card and it is like night and day coming from a HD7770

5 out of 5 eggsGreat bang for your buck

Pros: The card runs everything I throw at it smoothly when paired with my AMD FX-8350 CPU. It runs cool and very very quiet. Just out of curiosity, I cranked the fan up to 100% and it was insanely quiet.

Another pro is that it fits into a mid-size case (specifically the Antec 300) like a glove. Most other R9 290s are monstrous in size but this one is compact and fits well.

Cons: None so far.

Other Thoughts: Great value and I believe that it is the best model of this GPU.

5 out of 5 eggsGood So Far

Pros: Very fast, runs cool, a bit noisy. Overclockable and does not void MSI's warranty by doing so.

Cons: Nothing so far

3 out of 5 eggsUpgraded from 5850

Pros: So far, so good. It works. Afterburner has nice options and a nice hardware monitor, mantle works great on Bf4 as it should. The card itself is sturdy and looks great in my case.

Cons: Biggest problem I have is it's weight, I don't know if all cards weigh 15lbs these days but the thing is so heavy I feel like it's going to rip my motherboard off it's case mounts and shatter around this beast in a million pieces.

The fan at 100% sounds like it's about to fly off, I really don't want it ever going above 80%, I'm afraid it'll break, especially after reading some of the other reviews here..

Afterburner isn't saving my overclock or profile, on startup it always defaults to stock, not a big deal.

Other Thoughts: This card combined with a 8350 vashera or any other AMD cpu is going to render Elder Scrolls Online unplayable, as I just found out.

Apparently Zenimax is in bed with Intel and Nvidia right now, because I can't even play at the lowest resolution and lowest settings without experiencing stuttering and poor framerates. Based on similar performance issues with my previous 5850 this leads me to believe that the CPU is bottlenecking. OR even worse, it's programmed obsolescence.

This isn't listed as a CON because, Mantle is still a relatively new API and ESO is a new MMO by a newer studio which doesn't even take advantage of Mantle.

Maybe if they did... hmm.. lol nah, keep dreamin'.

OH ONE OTHER THING!! Dear NEWEGG, can you please have a good talkin' to with whoever was responsible for shipping my graphics card, they put all of the plastic bag bubblewrap on the top of the box, basically only a quarter inch of styrofoam and half inch of cardboard were protecting the bottom of my graphics card, let this be a testament to how sturdy the MSI R9 290 is against inept packing and shipping employees. Or how awesome UPS is at shipping a 3-5 day shipping plan in 2 days and handling it with care.

4 out of 5 eggsstill working good

Pros: Have had this card for a few months now and it is performing very good. Just updating on what I have been experiencing so far. Temps on idle stay at 39C and go up to between 50-60C while gaming. 64C is the highest it has gotten after about 2 hours of gaming. Color and picture quality is excellent.

Cons: The biggest con is not with the card itself but terrible AMD drivers. You pretty much have to go through several drivers and find which driver is the most stable for you. I used 13.11 that came form the MSI cd and had no problems. Updated to 13.12 and had random black screens during gaming, while online, and while on my desktop. There have been alot of people with this same issue and it is not heat, memory, the cpu, power supply, windows, or anything else with the card itself, but the drivers. Also, it seems these cards do not like a standard hdmi cable which quite a few people use due to the price. I have read reviews and experienced it myself with the black screen issues using a standard cable. I switched to a premium gold hdmi cable and it is made a huge difference. So far no problems with 14.4 drivers or with a new hdmi cable. And another thing, I advise not installing AMD raptor that is suppose to optimize gaming. All it did for me was slow game play down.
I hope these comments helps those who might or have been experiencing the same things that I have.

Other Thoughts: Still a great card and I would consider buying it again, but AMD does need to address their driver issue and other software issues.

4 out of 5 eggsBig upgrade

Pros: This card is extremely fast and runs very cool. Handles everything I throw at it pretty much at max settings - Battlefield 4, Assassins Creed 4. Card runs cool too - Don't have any experience with the reference design but even at max load this card runs at like 70-75 degrees in my well ventilated case. Quiet too, can't even really hear it over my case fans. Big upgrade compared to my old Radeon 6950 in both performance and sound level.

Cons: First card was a dud unfortunately - Card worked on and off for about a month. Had some initial problems with crashes/system lockups which seemed to go away once I adjusted some of the settings in Afterburner. At the end of the month the card would crash games about 40-50% of the time. Had tried overclocking the card past the 1007/1250 MHz stock (overclock) and it actually caused a significant performance drop.

Other Thoughts: RMA process was quick and easy using the online form - Actual turnaround at MSI was less than 3 business days - overall including shipping I had a new card back in 11 days. Overall very happy with the purchase despite the first one being a dud. Unfortunately missed the free game promotion by 1 day from the time my order was processed.

3 out of 5 eggsGreat card at first

Pros: Ran everyyhing I through at it on ultra settings.

Cons: Ran about 75 deg. for a month and a half then the temp went to 94 while gaming with fan at 100 percent. Every thing is clean inside and there is way more air flow than needed to keep this thing cool if it is operating correctly.

Other Thoughts: I have a Sapphire 290 with a stock cooler on it and it runs cooler than this beast right now. I hope MSI has a fix for this otherwise a RMA will soon result in the same problem.

3 out of 5 eggsOil Leaked From Fans

Pros: Pretty good card at first.

Factory overclock @977 MHz and MSI app (separate download) makes it really easy to switch from reference clock @ 947 MHz to base factory overclock to higher factory overclock @1007MHz. It does not make any changes to memory clocks.

Card run quietly.

Decent backplate for rigidity.

Cons: Fans leak oil after a while. If you use the cards 24/7 the fans will fail sooner, but with as many mentions of this I have seen in forums with the Twin Frozr fans it is a matter of time. This hasn't been new. Cooling was fine while the fans ran. I had one of the two seize and the card went up to 94 C. The fans should be springy new and the start to get more difficult to spin. With a 94 C temp on one fail of the two fans the card's life is impacted and I cannot tolerate that.

Other Thoughts: I have two of these cards and saw some of the other reviewers mention this. I am now chiming in with my experience. I bought them at the end of February and the beginning of March. I am otherwise happy with the cards and the performance is in line with other R9 290s on the market running at the given clocks.

The shipping via UPS ground cost me about $18. It looks like from MSI's website that I will be out of the card for a month with their estimates. I expect to have the issue again since I have only had it a few months. I won't buy another TwinFrozr card. Quiet is great but reliable is better.

I had been looking around for after market cooling options, but they're not reasonable yet to me.
