The Radeon R9 290, the AMD's new flagship GPU, offers the weapon of choice for gamers who demand the best. It's based on the new 28nm Hawaii GPU architecture and introduces the support for DirectX 11.2, capable of rendering reality-redefining imagery in the hottest titles. With a massive number of stream processors and a gigantic 4GB GDDR5 memory, this GPU delivers the performance you need for smooth gameplay at extreme settings. The new CrossFire technology allows you to build a multiple graphics cards configuration without the use of interconnect bridges. With Ultra Resolution Gaming, you'll leave HD in the dust by gaming on displays much, much larger. A rich set of AMD innovative technologies are included, such as App Acceleration, AMD PowerTune, AMD ZeroCore, and AMD HD3D technology. With these technology advancements, you'll get more than one way to elevate your gaming experience.

Coupled with the R9 290X is advanced MSI technologies. This MSI Gaming VGA Card comes equipped with custom Twin Frozr cooling, military class components for better stability, and features OC mode, allowing you to unleash the full potential with the press of a button.

  • newegg ADVANCED TWIN FROZR IV MSI's Twin Frozr has been the industry-defining graphics card cooler. The first Twin Frozr kicked of the dual-fan trend and today MSI stays true to its dual-fan dual-slot design, where others have to resort to less effective means. The other part that the Twin Frozr cooler uses is a large aluminum fin grid array that provides a huge amount of surface area for cooling. Heat from the GPU is transferred to the fin grid array by virtue of heat pipes with MSI's special SuperPipe technology. SuperPipes transfer heat twice as fast as regular heat pipes, enabling an MSI GAMING graphics card to stay cooler than the competition. Furthermore, MSI provides all-new Airflow Control technology on Twin Frozr. This new thermal technology leads the airflow to the heat pipe by a special deflector on the heatsink, so it can deflect more airflow to the heat pipes directly.
  • newegg MILITARY CLASS COMPONENT One of the deciding factors in performance is the quality of the components used. That is why MSI only uses MIL-STD-810G certified components for its gaming cards, because only these components have proven to be able to withstand the torturous circumstances of extreme gaming and overclocking. SOLID CAP - One With their aluminum core design, Solid CAPs have been a staple in high-end design mainboard designs, and provide lower Equivalent Series Resistance (ESR) and an over-10-year lifespan. Hi-C CAP - A Hi-c CAP is a very small, but super-efficient capacitor. Besides ensuring enough spacing, it also allows for 93% energy efficiency. NEW SUPER FERRITE CHOKES - New Super Ferrite Chokes use a ferrite core that is super-permeable. This allows the super ferrite chokes to run at a 35°C lower temperature, have a 30% higher current capacity, a 20% improvement in power efficiency and better overclocking power stability.
  • newegg GAMING APP A lightweight, easy to use OC tool, the Gaming App allows you to switch between OC Mode, Gaming Mode, and Silent Mode with the press of a button. Each mode has individual pre-defined Base Clock and Boost Clock to meet different play scenarios.
  • newegg EXPERIENCE - PREDATOR A built-in screen and video capturing tool named Predator captures your screen as still images or videos with the push of a button. So you can capture and record your coolest, goofiest, and most awesome gaming moments on your PC!
  • newegg AFTERBURNER MSI Afterburner has quickly become the favorite overclocking software for media, overclockers, and end users. Because of its simple interface, it's easy to learn, but it packs a lot of powerful features, like an integrated benchmark utility called Kombustor that can check your system performance in benchmarking mode, or run as a stability test. Don't speak English? No problem: MSI Afterburner is translated in many languages, including Russian, Spanish, Chinese, and Korean! Not satisfied with the looks? Just change to one of the many different skins, or create one yourself with ease! Even better, you can run Afterburner straight from your smartphone! Download the MSI Afterburner App from Google Play or the Apple store.
  • newegg New Generation of CrossFire The card features next-generation CrossFire support for up to four graphics cards with no interconnect bridge required.

4 out of 5 eggsNo major issues so far

Pros: Seems like it's gonna be just fine for 1080p gaming for years to come, considering it's playing things on high/ultra and getting me 45+ fps.

Cons: These cons might not be the card's fault...but this card took a lot of tweaking til it worked ideally!

I'm using it on a TV, and I had to change my pixel type or else the whole desktop oversampled. Since my TV is 60hz, I had to use vsync and third frame buffering to get any of my games to play without screen tearing. I also found that most of my games oversampled, causing performance issues, so I downloaded fullscreenizer, which lets me play videos at 1920x1080 in a borderless window, instead of the fuzzy ~1950x1110 that it set all my games to. Unsure if this is a TV or GPU issue so I'll still give 4 stars.

Other Thoughts: It does its job, but sometimes I wonder if an Nvidia card would have required less work to get set up due to better drivers. Still, now it works, and it's glorious!

4 out of 5 eggsBang for the buck

Pros: Works as advertised, picked it up on sale. Talk about bang for the buck. You can buy better or more expensive, but this will get the job done. Runs ARK like a champ for example.

Cons: runs hot. Big, make sure it will fit in your case.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Card!

Pros: This card has handled everything I have thrown at it. I have tried to throw as much as I can at this card and it has handled it all. I play most games at an average of 120 fps. My most graphic game runs at an average of 85 fps.

Cons: Need at least 750 W PSU to run. I ran this card with my 750 W PSU along with my AMD FX-9590 and my PSU blow up.

3 out of 5 eggsPC Won't Turn On...

Pros: Looks really nice... I wish it would have worked. The only reason I bought it was because I thought my current GPU had problems, since my PC would sometimes not turn on/get BSOD'd with this "atikmpag.sys" error. I tried everything to see if it was the software drivers (uninstalling catalyst control center, driver sweep, reinstalling, etc).

Cons: Did not see that it was "non-refundable"... With my current GPU, I would at least be able to turn on my PC every once in awhile. No matter what I do, it seems like my PC just won't boot with the R9 290. I'm guessing it's the motherboard/PSU at fault. Now that I know that my current GPU wasn't faulty, I don't need the R9... but newegg's policy for this product is "non-refundable." Sucks... now i'm stuck with an extra GPU and down $330.

Other Thoughts: I'll just leave at at 3/5 for now.. Hopefully, someone from MSI or Newegg will respond to this and we can work something through. Maybe I can get a gift card instead, so I can at least use it to buy a new mobo/psu...

1 out of 5 eggsRandom Crashes

Pros: None

Cons: I purchased this card to replace my 5970 that died. When I try to play LOTRO the game loads and them hard crashes, even on the default settings. I replaced my HD after repeated re-installs and still have the same problem. I have written tech support for almost a year and still have not received a response. Building a new system to see if it work. I don't have another computer to try it on.

Other Thoughts: We will see if this is deleted so others cannot read it.

Manufacturer Response:

4 out of 5 eggsGreat card if you get it to work

Pros: Fairly quiet
Runs everything I've thrown at it thus far at max graphics quality

Cons: Had to manually install the drivers from AMD's website using my old card in order to get this one to work

Other Thoughts: As long as you get it working, this card is an excellent deal.

1 out of 5 eggsElite Black Screen

Pros: Theoretically, it's budget perfection.

Cons: I get no picture.
My monitor died years ago, and I've been using a relatively new TV as one in it's place (51 inches? Forget monitors.) Aside from not having a VGA adapter, I went with this anyway as it seemed to be the best bang for my buck. Welp.. yea.. I smooshed it into my mobo, attached to an HDMI slot (all 3 of them) and nothing, from both DVD-D ports. I read that there's a hybrid bios switch that is very hard to find if you don't know where to look.. finally found it. (faces outwards the case, real REAL tiny.) Nothing. Tried a different PCIX slot.. nothing. Product support? LoL. I don't know if it's just not compatible with my x99 asus mobo, or DOA. I'll try a straight HDMI/HDMI cable tomorrow, since I have no readily available VGA adapters that will work with DVD-D, and nobody locally sells them.. I'll update if I can make this thing sing, but as it stands, first and last MSI product I'll buy.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat card, great price

Pros: -Quick to process higher grade resolutions/textures
-Quieter than expected (When not using 100% fans)
-The MSI aftermarket cooler really does work well, if you don't use the normal fan controller.
-Plays GTA V in 60fps+ when using moderate settings without any major frame drops. Great card for everything I've thrown at it. Battlefield 4, GTA V, and a few others.

Cons: -HOT HOT HOT! Seriously, this card runs idle in my system at a breezy 65c, and heats up to about 80-85c under load.
-MSI software automatically clocked the card down to 300MHz, though that isn't an issue with the card itself, just MSI.
-Huge card! This is quite the brick sitting in my system and heavy to boot.
-Power Consumption; it's a hungry beast. And by all means, very well should be. This is a great card don't get me wrong but you'll need at decent power supply and two 6-pin connectors, one of which will be plugged into an adapter for an 8-pin.

Other Thoughts: I bought this card to replace an R9 270x also made by MSI and I have to say this is quite the upgrade! Before, my card struggled to keep up with higher demanding games in 1080p and 60fps. The R9 290 scoffs at these games, and tells asks them if they have more to give. I may be exaggerating a little, but it really is a great card for my system. If you truly want the best bang for your buck in the mid-ranged GPUs, seriously consider this card. For the price, it is hard to beat!
