The MSI R9 280X GAMING 6GB is powered by Radeon R9 280X, the latest AMD GPU designed to take your gaming to the next level. Based on the AMD 28nm GCN architecture and boasting support for DirectX 11.2, the Radeon R9 280X gives you the power to drive today’s hottest games — and tomorrow’s, keeping you in the fight whatever the circumstances. This model is BIOS-overclocked to up to 1050 MHz (Ref: 1000 MH) boost clock for smoother gameplay. With Ultra Resolution Gaming, you can leave HD in the dust by gaming on displays much, much larger. Whether using a 4k monitor or combining multiple HD monitors, you’ll get an expansive experience that’s truly out of sight. A rich set of AMD innovative technologies is included, such as App Acceleration, AMD PowerTune, AMD ZeroCore, and AMD HD3D technology. With these technology advancements, you'll get more than one way to elevate your gaming experience.

This MSI Gaming Series comes with an array of performance- and reliability-enhancing technologies, as well as a gigantic 6GB video memory, making it the ultimate choice for Ultra HD gaming.

  • newegg ADVANCED TWIN FROZR IV MSI's Twin Frozr IV offers dual-fan dual-slot design for voluminous airflow. The other part that the Twin Frozr cooler uses is a large aluminum fin grid array that provides a huge amount of surface area for cooling. Heat from the GPU is transferred to the fin grid array by virtue of heat pipes with MSI's special SuperPipe technology. SuperPipes transfer heat twice as fast as regular heat pipes, enabling an MSI GAMING graphics card to stay cooler than the competition. Furthermore, MSI provides all-new Airflow Control technology on Twin Frozr. This new thermal technology leads the airflow to the heat pipe by a special deflector on the heatsink, so it can deflect more airflow to the heat pipes directly. In addition, the exclusive heatsink design increases the area of heatsink to enhance the efficiency of dissipation much more.
  • newegg MILITARY CLASS COMPONENTS This graphics card is constructed with MIL-STD-810G certified components to withstand the torturous circumstances of extreme gaming and overclocking. Solid CAPs with an aluminum core design have been a staple in high-end design mainboard designs, and provide a lower Equivalent Series Resistance (ESR) as well as a lifespan of over 10 years. A Hi-c CAP is a very small, but super-efficient, capacitor. Besides ensuring enough spacing, it also allows for 93% energy efficiency. New Super Ferrite Chokes use a Ferrite core that is super-permeable. This allows the Super Ferrite Chokes to run at a 35°C lower temperature, have a 30% higher current capacity – a 20% improvement in power efficiency – and better overclocking power stability.
  • newegg GAMING APP A lightweight, easy-to-use OC tool, the Gaming App allows you to switch between OC Mode, Gaming Mode, and Silent Mode with one press of a button. Each mode has individual pre-defined Base Clock and Boost Clock to meet different play scenarios.
  • newegg EXPERIENCE - PREDATOR A built-in screen and video capturing tool called Predator captures your screen as still images or videos with the push of a button. So you can capture and record your coolest, goofiest, and most awesome gaming moments on your PC!
  • newegg AFTERBURNER MSI Afterburner offers a simple interface, is easy to learn, and packs a lot of powerful features, like an integrated benchmark utility called Kombustor that can check your system performance in benchmarking mode, or run as a stability test. Don't speak English? No problem! MSI Afterburner is translated in many languages, including Russian, Spanish, Chinese, and Korean! Not satisfied with the looks? Just change to one of the many different skins or create one yourself with ease! Even better, you can run Afterburner straight from your smartphone! Download the MSI Afterburner App from Google Play or the Apple store, and start overclocking.
  • newegg Mantle There’s optimization, and then there’s Mantle. Games enabled with Mantle speak the language of GCN architecture to unlock revolutionary performance and image quality. It’s a game-changing innovation developed by AMD.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat performance, some driver issues,

Pros: I only paid $180 for this thing, so was quite a deal.

Cons: The drivers were a little finicky. Installed the base drivers from CD, then upgraded with the "Clean install option". Got some BSOD's, so had to user driver wiper (whatever its called now) and delete all drivers and install the latest, clean again.

3 out of 5 eggsScreen flickers

Pros: This thing runs anything I throw at it basically..

Cons: I experience screen flickers, also in the top left corner sometimes I get a flickering section of my screen. Although I thought it had to do with I was running 2 different monitors, a 27" BenQ and a 22" AOC but after reading reviews this seems to be a common thing. I always hate to RMA things A) Because you have to go through the hassle of customer service. B) Because you have to wait. I firmly believe that with ANY product you buy from a company, especially over $300-400 you should expect a reliable product straight from the box.. You shouldn't have to sit on the phone, discuss problems, wait for a new one etc. I think I will head on over to Nvidia instead of AMD. I am going to run a triple monitor setup, all the same size and brand to see if it fixes anything.

Other Thoughts: This is just my personal experience.. it was my first full computer build on my own so this is all new to me. One last thing is I wish I never got the 6g.. I hardly think anything I run utilizes the full memory potential.

3 out of 5 eggsGreat cooler made by MSI

Pros: Well let me start by saying that when I got this card it was amazing! Right off the bat I jumped into skyrim loaded up with texture mods and this card didn't skip a beat! props to MSI on the design of the Twin Frozr IV design too. The fans are massive and at max load playing bf4 on ultra the temps run at about 65-75 Celsius. MSI's customer support is also great to deal with as I'll explain below. I am an MSI supporter and think the design if their Gaming series products is second to none. As long as their support stays the way it is I will continue to spend my money with them.

Cons: Sadly this card died on me after just under 3 months :( I started it up one day and after the bios all I got was a black screen. I contacted MSI and they were very quick to reply (under an hour) I tried switching to the second bios be still got no signal from the card. I have filed an RMA with MSI and am sending it off tomorrow and hoping that a new working one will arrive promptly. The online service I received was very quick and wasn't in engrish so that is also a plus. I am only disappointed due to the fact that after shipping and everything I spent $500 and it died so soon. When the card did work I would also experience the occasional screen jitter that most other owners of this card have experienced. For me it only happens on the desktop and when watching videos. While gaming, it doesn't do this so I have no complaint since that was what my rig was built for.

4 out of 5 eggsVideo issues but good

Pros: Beefy video card. My FPS and performance skyrocketed.

Cons: R9 cards still have issues with pixilation and graphical artifacts in 3d and a flickering in 2D video when the cards power cycles. Some temporary fixes are available but a driver update is long overdue.

Other Thoughts: I'm still glad I bought this card but an nVidia in the same caliber may have been better for my current needs. I'm just patiently waiting for the drivers to be fixed.

3 out of 5 eggsAwesome performance but the screen flicker

Pros: The on board 6gb DDR5 ram holds up well while I run this card in infinity, stays around 60C under load while playing Warframe, Firefall, and BF4 on the highest settings. The Cool down function is awesome as well, after playing my games, I hit that button before I start basic tasks like youtube and netflix.

Cons: After about 3 days of owing this card I began to get screen flickers while doing normal task, like watching youtube videos. Just a little up and down screen flicker. I read up and this seems to be a common problem, but no one knows if its a driver issue for a VBIOS issue. So I updated both, and I am still having the issue. it only happens 1 to 3 times an hour, but it worries me, I didn't spend nearly $400 to have to send this back and have to wait up to 30 days to get a new one.

Other Thoughts: If you are conserned about flashing the bios on your mobo, or this card, then I would wait til they solve this issue with the screen flicker. On the other had however, this card kills straight out of the box, I was blowing away my friends dual sli titan blacks out of the water in BF4 will clear across the map head shots. I really want to show this card the love it should get but when it flickered and made me miss, I go mad just a little bit.

4 out of 5 eggsIt's nice but... I have issues with DVI

Pros: LOTSA MEMORY! Does it work? Can we ever really be sure?
Grid Autosport and BF4 in eyefinity is just awesome!

Cons: So, I haven't seen anyone write about this, and forum searching has been few and far between with what I have experienced.

I am running three asus 144hz monitors set at 120 connected via the two mini-display ports and the dvi (hdmi does not run 120hz).

I have an issue where the DVI port will not maintain 120hz signal consistently. Whenever I have to reboot, or if the system crashes, the DVI always ALWAYS sets itself to 60hz. There is no other refresh available. The Mini-DPs maintain 120 no problem (and still show the full range up to 144).

I literally have to unplug the mini-DPs and reboot the system. DVI now shows 120 as well as the full range up to 144. Plug the mini-DPs back in and everything is 120 across the board. Then and only then can I set an eyefinity array at 120hz.
Needless to say this is extremely frustrating.

I have since tried the EVGA display port hub. I am now on my second one of those.
This gets me by, but the hub comes with it's own set of problems like the screens just going black for a few seconds at a time. REALLY sucks when you're in the middle of a game.

Other Thoughts: Not a fanboy, but have a love hate relationship with eyefinity. So awesome when it works, but it can be a chore getting there. Especially at 120.

AMD 8320
MSi 990FXA-GD80V2
2x R9 280x
OCZ SSD 250GB
WD 1 TB HDD
16 GB Crucial ballistix tracer (blue of course) :)
1000 W Corsair PS
wrapped in a white Corsair 600T

Really wish they would put a card out with three Display Ports. They used to have cards with ONLY display ports; where did they go???!!! This would alleviate much frustration.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent!

Pros: This thing is an animal! This thing easily ate through Skyrim on Ultra settings running ENB mods right out of the box without any tweeking.

Cons: It's big. This dude needs to be in a full tower. Not saying that it wouldn't fit in a smaller case, but it would be exhausting to try and make it work.

Other Thoughts: Keep it cool.

5 out of 5 eggsReady for the Rift now

Pros: - Runs current gen games at ULTRA settings at a constant 60fps with Vsync enabled (including 16x filtering and all post processing and effects maxed)

- Average of 40-47 fps when playing games in Sterescopic 3D (Skyrim with graphics mods installed)

- Quiet card so far

Cons: - Adds a lot of heat to the room when used to play long sessions, although some of that might be my TV too. Together they added about 10 degrees to the room.

- Getting the right driver was a lesson in trial and error and many BSODs (Be sure to uninstall EVERYTHING from the previous video card and then uninstall the base drivers that came with this one before installing the latest ATI drivers)

- Massive card -- needs lots of room to the right where cables usually are left hanging, it is also high profile vertically, so just make sure to have a big enough case.

- Plastic dust covers over the ports at the back were a pain to get off (nitpicky but it really ticked me off)

Other Thoughts: I upgraded to this from my 1gb 560 TI and there is a huge difference in framerate stability and benchmarking. I mostly did this to get ready for the use of the Occulus RIft and if regular 3Dtv gaming is indication so far it will handle that device just fine [3D games tested were: "Skyrim" (using TriDef3D), "Trackmania Canyon", Castlevania: Lords of Shadows 2 and "Thief"].

This card is more than ready for the near future of PC gaming but even with its beefy 6GB of RAM it is unfortunately not DX12 ready. It is just the 3GB original with double the memory. So it shouid be thought of more as a between upgrade until the next gen of gfx cards arrive (this isn't for 4x gaming for instance).

I have not tried overclocking with Afterburner yet because I want to see how far I can push this thing with base frequency.

MY OTHER SPECS:
- i7 2700 3.5 ghz base (overclocked to "gaming" mode)
- E3D420VX 3Dtv (used as main monitor, 3D games output at 1080p)

1 out of 5 eggsAMD R9 Graphics Flicker

Pros: Run 3d like a champ

Cons: I purchased this card a few weeks ago and everything went fine with the installation. Then I started to notice graphical static flicker when browsing internet, watching videos or using 2d apps. I tried updating drivers and bios, anything I could do to alleviate the issue with no luck. So I RMA'd the card and the new card arrived and displays the same issues.

I've researched the internet far and wide for solutions. Apparently this issue is occurring with multiple different R9 cards from multiple different manufacturers. There is as of yet no solution to this issue that I could find.

All users don't have this issue so I imagine there are other hardware factors that make this issue bubble to the surface. Ultimately if you buy this card you are taking a risk that you will have this issue.

Other Thoughts: I did contact MSI about the issue and they simply recommended the RMA so I don't think they are interested in investigating any hardware incompatibility that could be causing this. I'm going to contact AMD next to see what they have to say.

5 out of 5 eggsNice over all

Pros: Only use it for mining. Doesnt seem to get any higher rates than the cheaper 280xs I own. But the fans are a bit bigger and a lot quieter.

Cons: Price.
