Advanced Twin Frozr IV

MSI's Twin Frozr has been the industry defining graphics card cooler. The first Twin Frozr kicked of the dual-fan trend and today MSI stays true to its dual-fan dual-slot design where others have to resort to less effective means.

The other part that the Twin Frozr cooler uses is a large Aluminium fin grid array that provides a huge amount of surface area for cooling. Heat from the GPU is transferred to the fin grid array by virtue of heat pipes with MSI's special SuperPipe technology. SuperPipes transfer heat twice as fast as regular heat pipes enabling an MSI GAMING graphics card to stay cooler than the competition.

Futhermore, MSI provides all new Airflow Control technology on the Twin Frozr. This new thermal technology leads airflow to the heat pipe by a special deflector on the heatsink, so it can increase the flow of air directly. In addition, this exclusive heatsink design increases the area of the heatsink to enhance dissipation even more.

Military Class Components

One of the deciding factors in performance is the quality of the components used. That is why MSI only uses MIL-STD-810G certified components for its Gaming cards because only these components have proven able to withstand the torturous circumstances of extreme gaming and overclocking.

Solid Caps

With their aluminum core design, solid caps have been a staple in high-end mainboard designs and provide lower Equivalent Series Resistance (ESR) as well as an over-10-year lifespan.

R9 280 GAMING 3G

Hi-C Caps

A Hi-C Cap is a very small, but super-efficient capacitor. Besides ensuring enough spacing around a CPU socket to install large coolers, it also allows for 93% energy efficiency. Thanks to Hi-C Caps, MSI's mainboards are the most energy efficient in the market.

R9 280 GAMING 3G

Solid State Choke

It's a new generation, form-in-one choke, which doesn't generate vibration noise under heavy loads & provides 37.5% higher current output comparing with traditional ring chokes. This is very important when your GPU is overclocked or under high loads, since it requires even more electricity.

MSI Afterburner has quickly become the favorite overclocking software for media, overclockers and end-users. Because of its simple interface, it's easy to learn, but it packs a lot of powerful features like an integrated benchmark utility - called Kombustor - that can check your system performance in benchmarking mode, or run as a stability test.

Don't speak English? No problem: MSI Afterburner is translated in many languages including Russian, Spanish, Chinese and Korean! Not satisfied with the looks? Just change to one of the many different skins or create one yourself with ease!

Even better, you can run Afterburner straight from your smartphone! Download the MSI Afterburner App from Google Play or the Apple store and start overclocking.

4 out of 5 eggsMSI R9 280

Pros: Plays games much better than my old Geforce 550 ti. Far Cry 3 and BF4 can now be played with the highest settings and no stuttering like the 550ti on medium stings. DVD play back is good also. But I can't get it to display bluray.

Cons: Will not play blu ray on my system. Message says "HDCP is Required." I put my old 550 ti back in the case and blu ray plays fine. I put this R9 280 back in and still won't play blu ray. I use a 32" tv connected to PC through HDMI cable.

Other Thoughts: Even with the Bluray problem I'm glad I bought this card because I play games and DVD much more than Bluray.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat video card for 1080p gaming.

Pros: This card is great for the money and the performance is perfect for 1080p gaming. Bought this card to beat out the Next-gen consoles and am not disappointed. Maxes out video settings automatically on my system. Using this card with a 40" 1080p LCD TV and it looks great and have had zero issues with it right out of the box.

Cons: None, card works great right out of the box for me!

5 out of 5 eggsRunning in my Elite 120, mini ITX build

Pros: - Fits in my Coolermaster Elite 120
- Gives me the FPS to better my performance in World of Tanks, World of Planes
- Easy install
- The OC app helps me go to higher degress of function wihtout the usual OC tweaking

Cons: None so far

Other Thoughts: After I upgraded my AMD build from an XFX 6870 to MSI R9 270, I found this R9 280 on sale. I was building a mini ITX around an i5 4690K and wanted a more capable graphics card than the 270. My mini ITX build uses a Coolermaster Elite 120 case, modded for a closed loop water cooler on the CPU. The MSI R9 280 fits nicely, doesn't create any increased noise inside this case, and I have had zero temp issues.

5 out of 5 eggsReally good for the money

Pros: Performs well. Runs almost everything I have at 60fps. Will run Tomb Raider on Ultra at 60fps, ultimate @ ~53. Quiet even with the fans spinning like crazy

Cons: Wish it would come with MSI afterburner but nothing a quick DL can't fix. NBD

Other Thoughts: Good card. Seems like it will run anything in the near future with Crossfire avl for down the road.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Solid Video Card

Pros: Great Temps: About 50C on load
Can max out majority of games at 1080p
3GB of video memory allows you to use graphically intense mods for games like Skyrim and Minecraft since you have extra memory then you need.

Can't comment much on noise level because my case fans are extra loud.

Cons: None so far

Other Thoughts: Temps obviously depend on your build so this may vary.
Make sure your power supply is good and strong enough to power this card. It takes two 8pin connectors which should give you some idea on how much power it takes.

I only have a 600w PSU in my rig and I actually refuse to overclock it until I get a better PSU. If your PSU doesn't have enough power or even amperage on the rails you're connecting the video card to, you will definitely get artifacts because the video card is being starved.

I haven't experienced any issues. I'm playing BF4 at Ultra settings at around 50-60fps. Skyrim with a ton of mods and Tomb Raider around 55-65 fps at 900p.

My build:
AMD A10- 7700k @ 3.4Ghz APU
8GBs Ripjaws X @ 2133Mhz Memory
Gigabyte GA-F2A88X-UP4 Motherboard
Samsung 840 Evo 250GB SSD
600w OCZ PSU
Cooler Master n600 Case

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Fast, overclocks well, CHEAP!

Cons: It's not a R9 290

Other Thoughts: My sample overclocks to 1150/1500(maybe more) but I tend to run it at 1125/1375 for longevity, heat, noise etc. Nice card and handles all modern games at 1080p with max settings.

1 out of 5 eggsAvoid

Pros: none

Cons: MSI as a brand has been a huge letdown so far. I bought a motherboard from them that ended up being a dud and had to RMA it. Then I go to plug my GPU in and it ends up being a dud as well. Unfortunately for me, I had already done the rebate on the GPU so I had to send it to the manufacturers instead of Newegg and I got my new one today. I plug it in and this one actually works but its showing artifacts already. Looks like round 3 of RMA's for me.

Other Thoughts: When you call to RMA a product, don't go to their RMA department. I sat on hold for 40 minutes and finally gave up and called tech support. They are the only ones who answer their phones apparently.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,
Based on the symptom you reported, we suggest you checking following steps below since many reasons can cause the situation like this ,
1. Check and make sure that power are connected correctly and firmly (JPWR1 and JPRW2).
2. Check your other major hardware’s (memory, video card, CPU and power supply) to ensure that they are not the cause of the issue.
3. Can you verify the MSI video card on another working system or another working video card on your system to verify?
4. If you need further assistant, please feel free to contact our technical support department directly at 626.271.1004 from M to F, 6am to 6pm Pacific standard Time.

Best Regards,

5 out of 5 eggsOn sale and what i wanted

Pros: Initially I was looking at the Asus version of the R9 280 but I've always had good results with MSI and when this graphics card went on sale I jumped at the opportunity. Overall it works great most of the games I play are very fluid and no lag is present. The card itself wasn't as big as I thought so i didn't have to remove my central HDD cage in my Phantom 410 case. The card also looks very well made and has a nice design. The fans work good but can be a bit loud when the card is under load. Overall i'm pretty pleased with this purchase

Cons: Well two issues I had with the overall purchase neither one a huge issue though. First the driver disk that came with the card wouldn't load the video driver but all other programs loaded just fine. I eventually just went to AMD's website and downloaded the drivers there. And second I was a bit disapointed it didn't come with a case badge but nothing to lose an egg over.
