Supercharge your gaming experience with the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970 video card. The GeForce GTX 970 GPU is powered by the next-generation NVIDIA Maxwell architecture, delivering unmatched performance at incredibly lower power consumption when compared to the previous generation. 1664 CUDA Cores and a 4GB GDDR5 memory in 256-bit width work side by side for game redefining performance. You can play today's hottest titles at max resolutions on today's highest-definition displays, all at ultra settings.

Performance is just part of the story. The Maxwell architecture is engineered with the new VXGI (Voxel Global Illumination) technology to solve some of the most complex lighting and graphics challenges in visual computing. Scenes are significantly more lifelike as light interacts more realistically in the game environment. Super Resolution technology lets you enjoy the detail and brilliance of 4K gaming even on 1080p displays. The G-Sync technology ensures smooth, tear-free images by synchronizing the display frame rate to the GPU (requires displays that support G-Sync). An array of NVIDIA GTX technologies are also built in, like GPU Boost, NVIDIA 3D Vision, NVIDIA Surround, NVIDIA PhysX, and GeForce Experience. These technologies together provide the most immersive and competitive gaming experience possible.

This MSI GAMING video card is built with military-class components and is factory overclocked for more graphics performance out of the box. The exclusive Twin Frozr V thermal solution is cooler and quieter than the reference design for better gaming. The latest version of GAMING APP and Afterburner utility make it easy for you to monitor and tinker with your graphics card. The Predator utility lets your record gaming moments for easy review and sharing.

  • newegg Military Class components One of the deciding factors in performance is the quality of the components used. That is why MSI only uses MIL-STD-810G certified components for its gaming cards, because only these components have proven to be able to withstand the torturous circumstances of extreme gaming and overclocking.
  • newegg Twin Frozr V MSI’s Twin Frozr series has been the definition of graphics card coolers in the PC industry. Kicking off the dual-fan trend, MSI today stays true to its design offering the best thermal and acoustic performance in its class. Two powerful 10cm radius Torx Fans provide massive airflow thanks to the new dispersion blade, instantly reducing noise by about 5% compared to the previous generation’s designs. This reduces temperatures by about 10°C at maximum fan speed compared to the Twin Frozr IV Advanced. Under those fans lies a massive heat-sink with Airflow Control Technology, which covers 90% of the fan's diameter. Connected to the GPU is MSI’s special SuperSU Architecture, which allows the SuperPipes and regular-size heat pipes to do their work more effectively.
  • newegg GAMING app The latest version of the MSI Gaming App is expanded with MSI Scenamax technology (under the EyeRest tab) to provide you easy access to image quality improving technology in the easy comfort of the MSI Gaming App. Various modes offers you the options to choose from to match your playing scenarios. The OC Mode provides the maximum performance through higher clock speeds and increased fan performance. The Gaming Mode (Default) enables the best balance between in-game performance and thermal. The Silent Mode allows the best environment for the minimal fan noise.
  • newegg Multi-Frame sampled Anti-Aliasing (MFAA) With the launch of Maxwell, the Multi-Frame Anti-Aliasing (MFAA) is introduced to the world. This new, Maxwell-exclusive anti-aliasing technique improves edge quality with a minimal performance cost, and helps you enjoy anti-aliased games at ultra-high resolutions like 4K.
  • newegg Dynamic Super Resolution (DSR) Dynamic Super Resolution renders a game at a higher, more detailed resolution and intelligently shrinks the results back down to the resolution of your monitor, giving you 4K-quality graphics on an HD screen.
  • newegg Voxel Global Illumination (VXGI) Voxel Global Illumination (VXGI) is a stunning advancement, delivering incredibly realistic lighting, shading, and reflections to next-generation games and game engines.

5 out of 5 eggsMSI GTX 979 4G

Pros: -Runs cool and quiet
-looks good with my ASrock Fatality board
-Afterburner software solid overclocking

Cons: -Sags a bit in slot

Other Thoughts: Upgraded from an EVGA gtx 570's in SLI. Went from around 6k in firestrike to 11k. Hanvent had an issue with the card, running very well. I chose this card over other brands due to the excellent component quality, and Ive had good experiences with MSI in the past.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent Performance

Pros: This card is a step up from my previously owned Evga ACX 770 SC. It runs excellent and never goes over 69c even at with the most demanding of games. I have read a few reviews claiming there was a coil whine but I have not experienced that with my card. It matches with my color scheme and looks amazing.

Cons: No cons so far!

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent Choice

Pros: I was a bit worried when I ordered this card, as I have read many reviews of other models of 970s having coil whine issues. This MSI build is of higher quality, but I had still heard of some problems. Needless to say, I am so far very satisfied. The card is virtually undetectable in my case. My Cooler Master silent case fans produce more noise. No coil whine of any kind. I am very thankful for that.

The card also runs very cool. Under full strain the highest temps I have seen are 62C. (Air cooled) The cooler also seems fairly sturdy and of superior build quality. The illuminated MSI /w dragon logo also looks neat through the side of my case. And at just over 10.5" long the card is a full 2" shorter than the gigabyte G1 Gaming version I was considering.

Cons: None so far

Other Thoughts: I initially wanted a Gigabyte G1 Gaming, but sadly it was 0.5" too long to fit into my case. The Asus was my next choice just because of how quiet the cooler is but I found it incredibly hard to find. I had read positive reviews of the MSI version and decided to go with it after I got a notification from Newegg that some were in stock. I was not disappointed. The FROZR V cooler that MSI uses is very quiet, almost completely inaudible even under full loads. Upgrading from a GeForce 480 GTX, the difference in noise and performance is night and day. R.I.P. my old 480!

5 out of 5 eggsBest NVIDIA Experience

Pros: So far I am loving what MSI's GTX 970 is offering with its latest Maxwell Architecture technology and performance! It handles Battlefield 4 @ Ultra Settings @ 1920 x 1080 Resolution, although when you increase the resoultion scale in the game to 2K or 4K resolution texture, there is a decrease in framerate, but of course it's only a single GPU. Other games I tested such as Tomb Raider 2013, Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, they run very fine at maximum settings. Especially when you launch and play League of Legends, the fans don't spin at all because of the light load the card is producing. I'm not gonna lie, the GTX 900 series is the perfect solution to high-end gaming that goes accordingly to performance and budget.

Cons: Sometimes it can a bit noisy because of the fan that are spinning and sometimes coil whine can occur, but this doesn't really bother me as much.

Other Thoughts: It was pretty difficult getting one of these cards during the first two weeks because everyone is desperately trying to purchase this specific model of the GTX 970 or any other well known GTX 970 models. Even including the GTX 980s. Probably worth the wait lol.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat performance, Quite gaming

Pros: Works Great! A really nice card. New egg was great with the shipping!

Cons: Afterburner, over all a nice looking interface, But I wish it would just display real time info, like what exactly Mhz its at after moving the slider. Also wish you could just type in the exact Mhz. it does work, just would like the output of each slider move.

Other Thoughts: Also it doesn't come with a backplate, but has a black pcb. And EK will have waterblocks and backplates soon enough, so atleast its an option.

5 out of 5 eggsA Total Beast........

Pros: I'm keeping this review plain and simple. There's nothing that much to say but this video card is a monster. I had a choice between 780ti, 970, or the 980 for my new build. I've read hundreds of review and benchmark testing and this choice was completely a no brainer. First off, the 780ti is still $500+ and the new 980 is also $500+. Both have ALMOST the same results as the 970 for only $350. You do the math. Read reviews yourself and you'll understand what i'm saying.

Cons: I wish that the MSi LED logo lights up red instead of white. I'm trying to match it with my RED build but oh well. Not a con entirely. However, I'm pretty sure that there's some con to this video card, but there's nothing personally i can think of.

Other Thoughts: I'll be buying another one soon to SLI this baby.

2 out of 5 eggsDefective fan

Pros: Fast and quiet, until you have the dreaded fan problem these cards are becoming known for.

Cons: Dead fan

Other Thoughts: The card is great however, just head over to MSI's forums and you'll see a big long thread of people who are having issues with fans on these cards not starting and/or staying stuck at 100%. MSI is telling people to RMA the cards which it appears I'll have to do. They're blaming it on the sticker that's placed on the fan. This seriously dings their credibility.

The problem can be worked around by using a custom fan curve which doesn't allow the fans to turn off, but that's one of the main selling points of their Frozr design so to me that's not acceptable.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,
There is “no” known issue with our MSI Video card and the Fan. Please note "GPU fans on these series cards stop spinning in low load situations. This keeps the card quite and increases lifetime. If you have any question or concern regarding our MSI motherboard you purchased, Please do not hesitate to contact us directly by email at usreview@msi.com or by phone at 626.271.1004 M-F, 6AM to 6PM PST. We will be more than happy to assist you.

1 out of 5 eggsTerrible heating issue

Pros: During the 5 minutes plus gameplay I get, they are great.

Cons: I have an SLI setup, and have always had one. These cards have the worst overheating in crossfire I have ever seen. Only GPU one gets uncontrollably hot. I have tried the following fixes:
Re seating the graphics cards in different positions (ie swapping Master to slave)
Underclocking the GPU
Turning down voltage
Leaving fans on 100%
Benching in an open testing cage with a delta of 14 c
Put them in a different desktop PC (ie different MOBO and CPU configuration)
Nothing yields any results, GPU one always becomes uncontrollably hot and eventually crashes the PC in SLI. With just one in it never gets above 65 on stock clock. I would strongly advise any buyer against these cards if planning an SLI setup and am quickly trying to get my money back.

Other Thoughts: the exra soldering on the back of this card stick out so far, that without a black plate it hits the other card in SLI. just an overall mess by MSI.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,
Based on the symptom you reported, we suggest you checking following steps below since many reasons can cause the situation like this ,
1. Check and make sure that power are connected correctly and firmly (JPWR1 and JPRW2).
2. Check your other major hardware’s (memory, video card, CPU and power supply) to ensure that they are not the cause of the issue.
3. If possible verify the MSi video card on another working system, or verify another video card on your system to check.
4. If you need further assistant, please feel free to contact our technical support department directly at 626.271.1004 from M to F, 6am to 6pm Pacific standard Time.

3 out of 5 eggsNot impressed, but card performs well

Pros: -Price is reasonable
-Card runs well, no performance or stability issues with mine
-Silent operation (fans even stop when not in use or <60deg C)
-Dragon light on side lights up
-No coil whine

Cons: -Very wide (may not fit some cases such as carbide air 240)
-No backplate
-Significant flexing of rear of card when installed

Other Thoughts: 1st, let me say this card performs fine. So if thats all you care about, there is no reason not to buy this card. My primary disappointments were related of engineering decisions and cost cutting measures. The card flexes significantly at the rear of the card when installed. I understand the function of the card is uninhibited, however it still bothers me. I measured the card to have 2.5 degrees of flex at the rear portion of the card. Compared to a zotac card I have, with a back plate, which measures exactly 0 degrees relative to the motherboard. I understand MSI says it is not required for cooling, and I respect this, but they put a very heavy cooler on this card which I believe is not physically supported as well as it should be. My other concern with the cooler of this card is how wide it is. If you have a case which is somewhat narrow, you will want to get a different card.

Despite my complaints about the construction, I cannot take anything away from MSI in the performance category. I always look to MSI for my graphics cards before going to other vendors. The performance of this card is good. It runs silent, and is constructed of quality components leading to no coil whine. As for the backplate, MSI should've simply offered an optional back plate, for people like me, who hate how heavy and unsupported the card is.

5 out of 5 eggsUpdate from last, to be last

Pros: Ive picked up a second one of these for SLI. The first batch had a mouse pad to play with. The second batch did not for some reason or another. Not complaining as mouse pads are a dime a dozen nowadays. Anyways...

Unigine Valley benchmark scored me at 5669.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v389/utley27/Capture-10.jpg

Hitman Absolution runs perfectly @ 100fps
Crysis 3 runs perfectly over 80fps
Prepar3d V2.4 took a performance hit, running at 45fps
DCS took a performance hit running at 40fps
Battlefield 4 had a 50% increase running at 94fps,likewise with BF3

Have to admit, this card is still impressing me. So far, Ive managed to benchmark way past the GTX690 and GTX780Ti in terms over sheer horsepower, at the price of the GTX680 when it first came out. Really loving this card!

Cons: As someone has noted, you cant run triple SLI with these cards, as part of the frame prevents you from running a tri sli, as part of the fan cage blocks the sli bridge. I wouldnt bother with that anyways, 2 of these cards is overkill.
