Twin Frozr V

MSI's Twin Frozr series has been the definition of graphics card coolers in the PC industry. Kicking off the dual-fan trend, MSI today stays true to its design offering the best thermal and acoustic performance in its class.

Two powerful 10cm-radius Torx Fans provide massive airflow thanks to the new dispersion blade, instantly reducing noise by about 5% compared to the previous generation's designs. This reduces temperatures by about 50°F (10°C) at maximum fan speed compared to the Twin Frozr IV Advanced.

Under those fans lies a massive heat-sink with Airflow Control Technology which covers 90% of the fans diameter. Connected to the GPU is MSI's special SuperSU Architecture which allows the SuperPipes and regular size heat pipes to do their work more effectively.

Military Class Components

One of the deciding factors in performance is the quality of the components used. That is why MSI only uses MIL-STD-810G certified components for its Gaming cards because only these components have proven to be able to withstand the torturous circumstances of extreme gaming and overclocking.

GTX 980 GAMING 4G
GTX 980 GAMING 4G

Hi-C Cap
A Hi-c Cap is a very small, but super-efficient capacitor. Besides ensuring enough spacing around a CPU socket to install large coolers, it also allows for 93% energy efficiency. Thanks to Hi-c Cap's MSI mainboards are the most energy efficient in the market.

GTX 980 GAMING 4G

Super Ferrite Chokes
Super Ferrite Chokes use a Ferrite core that is Super-Permeable. This allows the Super Ferrite Chokes to run at a 95°F (35°C) lower temperature, have a 30% higher current capacity, a 20% improvement in power efficiency and better overclocking power stability.

GTX 980 GAMING 4G

Solid Cap
With their aluminum core design, Solid Cap's have been a staple in high-end design mainboard designs and provides lower Equivalent Series Resistance (ESR) as well as its over-10-year lifespan.

GTX 980 GAMING 4G

5 out of 5 eggsAmendment to my review

Pros: I have every game cranked up to the highest settings and this thing still eats them up! I have learned the MSI software and it is great, the fan controller is awesome, I can just set them at what I wont and away we go, the fact that it has a the temp on it is a nice touch. The gaming/oc/silent mode are easy to understand a switch back and forth to. All the included software makes everything so easy to monitor.

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: I was worried when I read on the internet about the stick on the fan and not allowing one fan to start up. I tried to think back about how I took the sticker off and honestly couldn't remember, All I kept envisioning was Godzilla taking it off. At any rate, I tested it with fur mark to see if the problem would happen to me. I had read that the second fan will start spinning at 50c, well mine didn't, so I kept watching and at 60c i started up fine. When I adjust the fans through the fan controller they both respond so I believe I am good to go. Also, as I am probably the only Titianfall fan out there, the game looks amazing with this card, as well as all my favorites, WoW, BF 2&3, Batman Styx master of shadow, I could go on and on, if you have the money and want a quality card MSI delivers!!!

5 out of 5 eggsFrom a GTX 760 to a GTX 980

Pros: 1) Power of this card in unreal
2) Size, for a flagship card, it still fits in my case!
3) Great MSI Afterburner Software
4) Overclocks like a dream
5) Temps! this thing barely goes above 65C under 100% load
6) Love the MSI LED Logo that lights up!

Cons: 1) Price (but still very good for a flagship card)
2) 2x 8-Pin Connectors (woulda been nice if it was 2x 6 pins)
3) BAD driver support right now
4) Sticker on the 1st Fan nearly ruined the card

Other Thoughts: Love this card. Absolutely love this card! but it is not without its problems which is solely down to the terrible driver support. At the writing of this there is only two drivers available, the 344.11 and the 344.16 drivers both are bad. I almost RMA'd this card because I thought it was defect but its not, its just really bad driver support. Problems I was having was "OpenGL message “lost connection” Display driver stopped responded and has recovered and the other one was just simply black screen total crash/freeze of the entire system in some games. The only way to fix this that I've found so far is to use DDU (display driver uninstaller) program to completely uninstall everything to nvidia driver and a reinstall of the driver but not installing the 3D related stuff in the driver. Not had a problem since. So if you're experiencing crashes, black screens its more than likely the driver, reinstall it properly for the new cards before you RMA the thing.

My System Spec:

AMD FX 8320 @ 4.0Ghz (was at 4.2 but down clocked)
ASrock Extreme 3 990FX Motherboard
16GB DDR3 1866 Gskill Ripjaws RAM
MSI GTX 980 (344.11 driver)
Thermaltake Toughpower 750WATT 80plus Gold PSU
Realtek onbaord Audio
128GB Toshiba SSD
Windows 7 x65 Ultimate

Gaming Res - 1920x1080

Frame Rates for games as Follows:

BF4 = 88-100 FPS / 4k = 40-60 (Using the DSR tech)

Skyrim Modded = 45-60 (this is an extreme mod I'm running with my own ENB+SweetFX with 60+ mods. To put into perspective, my 760 4GB was getting 20 frames and i had to run it at 1600x900 in a window in order for it to even be playable. So thats a mark up of about tripple my frame rates.

X-Rebirth = in game frame rate counter says 41-55 but MSI Afterburner says its between 88-100 frames. I am more inclinded to believe the afterburner result just by simply how it played, how responsive, and how fast it was. Put in perspective, the 760 managed the same in game frame rate counter, but was in 1600x900 window res and was far off on being on ultra settings. LOD and distance was at 30, shadows were off, most settings on normal ect..

FIFA 15 = 60fps constant and that was at 4k res too. Didn't try with normal 1920.

Minecraft with an extremely heavy Modded SEUS 10.1 Shader. Framerates at fullscreen are 88-100 with the occasional dip into the 70s once in awhile as it loads chunks. At 1280x720 for streaming res's I hit between 90-120 FPS. Put into perspective the 760 managed 45 in 1280x720 res. Again seeing a massive jump of nearly triple frame rates here.

The Golf Club = Stead 60FPS on high settings at fullscreen. This is a weird one this, this was hard on my 760 as on medium settings in 1600x900 res, my GPU load was 100% and frames were 40 often dipping into the 30s with an occasional jump to 60 depending on the course. This 980 gets 60-70 frames steady at fullscreen 1920x1080 on high.

Shadow Of Mordor bench : 80 FPS Average.

Most Powerful card I've ever owned. Simply Awesome

5 out of 5 eggsbest card i ever owned (and i had over 10)

Pros: the card is the best I ever experienced.
with MSI afterburner I was able to increase the core clock by 202 MHz and the memory clock to 601 MHz which is insane for air cooling.
also the fans are super silent, I have saved this overclocking profile with fans at 100% because I cant even notice the difference when playing games, and while in desktop the difference from 0 to 100 in the noise is minimal.
I recommend this card to everyone who is looking for a good upgrade.
at max load the temps didn't go beyond 64c which I never seen in air cooling.

Cons: the only thing I have to complain is that msi can only control 1 fan, the 2nd fan is only controlled by the msi vga fan control app., I wish I could just set both fans to 100% from msi afterburner itself.

5 out of 5 eggsFrom 680 to 980 2560 x1440

Pros: Ordered on the 1st , arrived on the 6th , been tinkering with it since…very impressed so far. Some bench/ game specs and Rig in Other thoughts.

SILENT!

Worthy upgrade to a 680 @ 2560 x 1440.

Stayed Quiet and Cool 70-71c under extended loads of benching and gaming, even in its "Overclocked" modes

MSI Afterburner and MSI Software to control the performance modes are very useful! Slight learning curve coming from 5 generations of EVGA cards and Precision X.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: All the benches are out there now so this is intended as what sticks out ot me as noteworthy.

My rig:

I-7 4770k @4.3GHz 1.20 vCore | Corsair H50
ASUS Maximus VI Hero
16GB of Crucial DDR3 1886
MSI GTX 980 Gaming 4G
Overlord Tempest 2560 x 1440 @120Hz
Dell E248WFP
Intel 520 180GB
HAF X | Logitech X 540 Speakers
Roccat Ryos MK Pro w/ Cherry MX browns | Logitech G-500s
Corsair HX1000W PSU

The card is silent, and I actually mean silent. First it is a passive cooler until 50c-60c?, so it was not initialy spinning at all, while I had understood this in theory to be the case it still made me nervous once I experienced it.

Booted to desktop and started loading drivers and apps, I placed my ear next to the card with the case side off and no noise. Took a flashlight and confirmed the fans were not spinning. This is still somewhere between weird and unsettling as normally a new out of the box Video Card with no fans spinning had been a terrible /equipment damaging situation to find.

Spun up a Bench of Unigine's valley and still could not hear anything, placed ear next to card with side off… still nothing, used flashlight and was relieved to see the fans spinning (at two different speeds which also is initially unnerving) I also know in theory the fans are independently controlled to cool their respective parts as needed GPU vs VRAM & MOSFETs but still to see them going different speeds just feels as if "something is wrong". I never heard the card at all in gaming or benching with the side off my case at desk level 2.5 feet from my head.

With the 680 I could hear once the PC booted and was on the desk top, and then once underload from gaming or benches it became a leaf blower in comparison. (Granted I ran an aggressive fan profile in Precision X with my GTX680 to keep the boosts higher)

Unigine Vally 2560 x 1440 all settings maxxed went from a score of 27 (680) to 43 (980) but with much higher Minimums.

The real story was gaming; in Bf4 Multiplayer.

I went Full Ultra all maxxed on the 680@ 2560 x1440 and was 40-50 frames playable but with heavey action it saw dips that were intolerable-30’s (Played full 30 min match).

I went Full ULTRA all maxxed on the 980@ 2560 x 1440 and it was 80-90 Frames with no unacceptable drops in Frames. (Played full 30 min match) Then turned down the MSAA from 4 x to 2x and it shot up into 100+ FPS and smooth like Jelly in Ultra.

No regrets with first MSI Card so far, I am interested to see if these military grade parts and thier solid capacitors and such lend themselves to longevity.

5 out of 5 eggsMSI 980-ya!

Pros: I received this card today and tested it out on Battlefield 4 and World of Warcraft, both on Ultra settings. I was getting 93-100 FPS on WOW and running at about 45c using the gaming mode. I tried out BF4 on ultra running on gaming mode and was averaging about 54-58c and 88-100fps. I thought about turning down some settings to increase the FPS, but I turned to overclock instead of gaming and was getting 130-144 fps. Not sure how much I should run in overclock, but I figure it will be ok for BF4. The card came well packaged and the gaming pad included is pretty nice, looks good and is larger than my Razer pad. I am very happy with my purchase so far it seems like a big increase over my gtx 680. The heat sink is pretty massive and so far seems to cool very nicely.

Cons: Just a little con, the card is large (not a con) and seems to flex a little when the power connectors are attached, just makes me worry a bit. I looked at it over and over to make sure I wasn't torquing anything to much.

Other Thoughts: This is the first card I have owned in about 9 years that isn't EVGA. I am used to precision, so afterburner and the fan control are new to me. The programs that come with the card seem pretty helpful and useful to have when monitoring temps etc, just will take me a while to get used to them. Also the fact that the fans are not spinning because the card stays so cool is sorta freaking me out a little, I am not really used to that, but as long as it stays cool.
My setup
Intel Core i7 4770 oc'ed to 3.8ghz
Asus Sabertooth Z87
16gb Gskill
MSI 980
HAF 932

1 out of 5 eggsI have yet to get the thing working

Pros: good looking card.
light.

Cons: So far, despite driver updates and trying many monitors, I cannot get this thing to work for more than a few minutes before either the screen goes black or my PC crashes. after a few minutes of booting, even if I just sit I. the bios screen the screen will say it is revieving no signal. I am at a loss for what to do so I might send it back and hope a new one will fix the problem.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,
Based on the symptom you reported, we suggest you checking following steps below since many reasons can cause the situation like this ,
1. Check and make sure that power are connected correctly and firmly (JPWR1 and JPRW2).
2. Check your other major hardware’s (memory,CPU and power supply) to ensure that they are not the cause of the issue.
3. If possible can you verify the video card on another working system or try a different video card on your system to check?
4. If you need further assistant, please feel free to contact our technical support department directly at 626.271.1004 from M to F, 6am to 6pm Pacific standard Time.
