5 out of 5 eggsSecond review

Pros: The 11.5 drivers are spectacular. Performance in just about everything has increased dramatically. It took a few months, but AMD finally released what was needed to be released at launch. Metro now runs DX11 @ 1920x1080 with 4xMSAA, 16xaniso and both tess + DOP at 30-50 fps.. sometimes the fps drops below 30 but its still playable. Disabling either tesselation or DOP will dramatically increase performance. I choose DOP over tesselation, and my fps is really smooth. I love the HD6970. Also, lately I've been playing with voltage and increased it from 1.175v to 1.215v and its ROCK STABLE as always.

Cons: Took lots of time to release the proper drivers. But now they are AWESOME.

Other Thoughts: Thankfully Powercolor put this HD6970 back for sale. I will buy a second one. Getting another one is a no-brainer. However I will have to upgrade motherboard :(

5 out of 5 eggsGreat freaking cards!

Pros: I got two of these(one open box from here, another from a guy on OCN), and these are the best cards I've ever had in my life. Powercolor is a blast to deal with too.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Why is the 570 around? It's such a fail at the price point, along with the 560Ti. Now the 460, that's a beast of a card for the price(had one that had the highest OC on stock air, stable at 1020Core).

5 out of 5 eggsEnthusiast gamer product

Pros: -Morphological AA works wonders with some games.
-High FPS with settings maxed out in just about any game.
-Drivers have come a long way..CCC is not as glitchy.
-People who say that the temperatures are bad dont know anything about computers. Default fan speed is at 30%. Install MSI Afterburner, bump the fan speed up manually...TEMPERATURES ARE EXCELLENT! NEVER GOES OVER 63celsius!
-AA, aniso, tesselation are all very configurable in CCC. You can choose your settings manually for each game or simply let the application configure the settings. Goes from 2xAA to 24xEQAA. You can enhance the app settings or completely over-ride them. The AA is so powerful that some games simply cannot function properly with the settings so high.
-Mine is overclocked to 950/1425. ROCK STABLE. Plays metro 2033 @1920x1080, ultra settings, 4xMSAA, 16xaniso at a decent 25-35 fps.. very playable. On high settings, 30-50 fps, and on medium 45-60+ with MSAA. BFBC2 maxed out, 60 fps +, crysis 2 maxed out

Cons: -When you adjust the fan, it is pretty loud, I hate to admit it. Mine goes to 55% speed and keeps the temp at 63celsius.. the heatsink design is extremely efficient but noisy
-Drivers are not optimized for all games. Currently im running 11.2 drivers and I cant wait for 11.3 ... this card is not reaching its full potential cuz of the drivers
-Morphological AA requires quite a bit of processing power when enabled. I thought it wasnt supposed to sacrifice performance
-2 days after I placed the order, all the aftermarket heatsink designs came out! I wanted the PCS+ version. Also, the price of this card went down to 340$, while i paid 360$... Im pretty frustrated about this. Make up your minds on the price!
-Expensive for a card that doesnt have optimized drivers.

Other Thoughts: Previously I had the evga 8800GT... What a huge upgrade. I chose the 6970 over the gtx570 because I wanted to give AMD a chance. I am not disappointed. I truly think its a shame that people try to bash AMD simply because they are nvidia fans. Its very immature. Look at all the people WHO ARENT EVEN CONFIRMED OWNERS that leave negative comments on 6970 video cards. I am truly disgusted by these individuals.

AMD X4 965 phenom II black edition OCed to 3.8 ghz
gskill 2x2gig 1600mhz 9-9-9-24
gigabyte 870a-ud3
powerstone olympia 650watts, 54amp/12v rail
antec 300
samsung spinpoint F3 1tb
windows 7 64bit

You will not be disappointed by this card. If noise is an issue for you, then dont turn up the volume, bear the higher temps. High temps arent even that bad ... sure it reduces your cards lifespan but are you really gonna keep a video card for 10 years? NO! by that time, dx15 will be released and you'll have to buy a new one. i tried to be as objective as possible fo

5 out of 5 eggsFast, works very well

Pros: This card is very fast, I've had no frame rate problems in Crysis 2 demo or any other game I tried (besides bad ports, that have known problems with any setups...)

Cons: A little big, but if you are getting a card like this, you should have thought about your case before hand.

Other Thoughts: I don't get why people are saying this thing is only 3 stars and some old card is better than it. It almost seems as if they are trolls that hate ATI like some 12 year PS3 owner hates the xbox or the other way around. I don't understand why people do this. If the 100 or so dollars was worth it to me, I would have gotten a 580, it just wasn't.

3 out of 5 eggsIt's a Waste of Money

Pros: I've found none. Maybe quite fan?

Cons: Game play say Crysis, Crysis Warhead or FarCry2 isn't nearly as smooth as the GeForce GTX280 is was to replace.

I also can not get a smooth Blu-ray movie play out of this card.

It must be the setting but no luck finding anything proper. It's also one plain looking brick in your case.

Manufacturer Response:

Something is definitely not right. I'm not sure if it's the drivers you have installed, or something in your configuration, but this card runs circles around a GTX280 in both 3D and BR playback. If you shoot me an e-mail at I'll be more than happy to help you out, thanks.

3 out of 5 eggsits ok

Pros: performs pretty good

Cons: Not much of an improvement in the games I play vs my 9800 gtx+ sli setup which cost less. WoW and Black ops would have run better with similarly priced nvidia cards etc 570.

Other Thoughts: I hope some of the new games perform better frame rate wise with ati.

5 out of 5 eggsPure Power

Pros: Very powerful card. Not very loud.

Cons: Big card: BARELY fits an Antec 300.
Lack of DisplayPort monitors*

(* not the card's fault but be sure to buy a miniDP to HDMI or DVI adapter if youre going to use more than non-DP 2 monitors.)

Other Thoughts: Running triple monitors with two Eyefinity profiles. 3 monitors, watching movies on one, web browsing on one, and working in Excel on one. Switch profiles, click click, and playing FPSs at 5444x1650.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesomeness

Pros: Runs Metro 2033 and AvP in Direct X 11 Buttery smooth. All my games are cranked up on a 1920x1200 Display and run great. When I boot into Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS with Compiz on I get up to 1400 FPS with nothing running. Even with several windows open, a few movies going, 5 Virtual Desktops, and rotating my my cube I only drop to about 40 FPS temporarily. Once I let go of the cube with all this running I get about 400 FPS.

Cons: I get the "AMD Unsupported Hardware" overlay in the bottom right hand corner of the screen with Ubuntu, and there are no updated fglrx drivers yet for it to take more advantage of the hardware. This will probably be corrected soon by x-swat ppa as soon as the 11-1 or 11-2 Catalyst drivers come out for Linux.

Other Thoughts: Everything the 6970 is doing now, how come my 5870 couldn't do? I thought we were further along than we actually are with technology.
