4 out of 5 eggsGood card, but know what you're getting

Pros: This is the most powerful passively-cooled graphics card in the world as of this writing. If you have one of those newer cases with a fan on the side panel it should work quite well. If not you can attach a ultra-low-speed 120mm or 140mm fan (~500rpm) and you should be OK. A pair of 80mm fans would probably work too.

Cons: No mounting holes or fan connectors for mounting an aftermarket fan. This is an issue because I was getting temperatures of 60°C when the thing was just idling. Also, the card is huge by itself and by adding an extra fan there isn't much room left for other add-in cards.

Other Thoughts: This card would be great if PowerColor had just stated in its literature that it runs hot, and provided some mounting holes and fan connectors so that the customer can add an extra fan or two if needed. With a quiet low-speed fan attached it has a fantastic performance-to-noise ratio.

5 out of 5 eggsChanged my opinion...

Pros: good card

Cons: So I bought this back in Nov 2011 and for the life of me could not get it to work in my box (using this mb http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131232 and this psu http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817703009). Both the mb and psu can push my dual 8800 gtx cards with no problem. But upon plugging this card into the PCIE port 1, I constantly get "display driver failed to respond". I tried for several days to figure it out and finally just bagged it and threw my old cards back in. I ended up RMA'ing the first card and the second card did the exact same thing - so clearly a problem with my box (as Hugo from PC Power/Cooling pointed in my initial review).

I ended up having to move the card to the second PCI E slot and it seems to be working now. It probably helps that there was several driver updates between Nov 2011 and March 2012.

So if anyone has problems, try both your PCI E card slots - not sure if I had tried this back in November or not

5 out of 5 eggsGood Card

Pros: Quiet! No fans at all so if quiet is what you want this is a good way to go.

Cons: Need a case with good airflow. In the smilodon case i had this card was way too hot, switched to an antec 300 and problem solved.

Other Thoughts: As far as I know there are no more powerful cards that are passively cooled.

1 out of 5 eggsSeems awesome but not so much

Pros: Silent, multiple outputs is great - even worked with my iMac (late 2009) display port.

Cons: Well, I was able to game on this thing for about 2 days and low and behold I'm getting "Display driver stopped responding and has recovered". I ended up RMAing the first card back to PowerColor (too late to return to newegg after a month) but my new card STILL has the same problem.

At this point my guess would be its something wrong with my box - motherboard/ram/hardrive/power supply/temps. After testing the RAM (with MEMTEST) and hard drive, both were OK. My motherboard is about 10 months old and has no problems that I can tell. My temperatures are all fine, everything is around 50C. Next guess would be the power supply which doesn't make sense though because it has no problem supporting my 2 old 8800 GTX cards (needing 4 6-pin connectors) under full load. This thing only requires 1 6 pin.

Might pick up a better power supply (currently running http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817703009) but for now I'm completely frustrated with it.

It should just work!

Manufacturer Response:

"My motherboard is about 10 months old and has no problems that I can tell"

You're not really going to be able to visually look at a motherboard (unless it does have a visual flaw such as a blown capacitor) and determine whether it's bad or not. What you described could very well be caused by a motherboard. It's possible that it's developed a flaw that's difficult to isolate. You replaced the card and have tried 2 different ones now, yet you're still having the exact same problem. So you're right in assuming that something else might be what's causing your headaches. If you need further help diagnosing please feel free to contact me at hugo@powercolor.com, thanks.

4 out of 5 eggsGood refresh

Pros: -Small design platform which opens it up to all sorts of case options.
- Runs pretty cool and doesnt draw attention to itself with noise.
- Big Frame buffer for multiple displays
- 6 display out

Cons: -First one arrived DOA sadly, got it swapped out and now all is well.
- Lack of supplying single active DP adapter.

Other Thoughts: My biggest complaint with these is limitation of actual support monitor outputs before needing the active display adapter(s). At a $100 bucks an adapter, this quickly becomes a $5-600 dollar card with the proper setup in the end. Just wish they could address to handle at least 4 monitors in a stable manor without the added stress on the output controller.

5 out of 5 eggsQuick and silent!

Pros: Nice upgrade from my passive HD4850. Framerates in the 40's at 1920x1200 in demanding games like Metro 2033, Crysis, and Mafia II with maxed (or close to maxed) settings. Overclocked to 850/1155 with an undervolted case fan blowing on the card, and temps never exceed 72C. Also a great deal, considering the cost of an Accelero S2 and the pain of retrofitting a large heatsink to a stock card.

Cons: This thing is BIG, as the pictures show, and also HEAVY. If you transport your computer around, you'll probably want to make sure the card stays secure. It shouldn't have to be said, but good airflow is a must for any passive video card like this. You won't want to cramp this thing in a Micro ATX case without some serious overall cooling.

Other Thoughts: To the negative reviewers below: don't skew the rating of a great piece of hardware because NewEgg initially screws up a description or your video codecs are out of wack.

5 out of 5 eggsWhat a great idea!

Pros: Completely Silent. Combine this with SSD (WOW)

Cons: Wish they put out a card for a faster GPU

Other Thoughts: Replaced my old 4870 with this 6850. Not a huge increase in performance because of the renaming of ATI GPUs (the 6870 of the 4xxxx series would the 4850).

I hooooope they release this on the 7000 series cards. I'll scoop one up in a heartbeat.

1 out of 5 eggsGeForce 9600 GT is still better to play 60p HD video

Pros: Silent and great for gaming.

Cons: I have Sony digital camera which records video in 1920x1080 60p format. My old GeForce 9600 GT plays it fine without any problem. On the other hand, Radeon, even 6850 glitches playing HD 60p video. I have returned it already.

Manufacturer Response:

This card is much more powerful in every way compared to a 9600GT. If you were having video playback problems then more than likely your video wasn't being optimized by the GPU, which could be due to drivers, or even a video codec problem. Proper removal and re-installation of video drivers is crucial here. Also, playback can be highly dependent on the software used since some software isn't optimized for certain hardware and vice-versa. If you have any other questions feel free to e-mail me at hugo@powercolor.com, thanks.
