2 out of 5 eggsStay away

Pros: This was for the 1gb version but they completely discontinued it.

The price was $139.99 which was awesome. So the price/performance ratio was good.

It's also a good card when it works, had no trouble maximizing most gaming settings.

Cons: It crashes a lot.

I've had to reinstall old drivers multiple times, even then it crashes when viewing youtube videos. I disabled hardware acceleration and even then it still crashes a majority of the time. Going to run 11.11 drivers even though they are a few generations old.

There were many issues like this around the web regarding powercolor 6870 1gb cards, but I figured they were the minority.

Other Thoughts: Would be nice to get a card that is more reliable. Considering switching to nvidia.

Manufacturer Response:

If you are still in possession of this card, please contact me at so that I can assist you in resolving the issues you're encountering with the 6870 card you own.

Thank you,

5 out of 5 eggsGreat card for the price!

Pros: This card has great performance for the price. It has similar performance to more expensive cards. I have two PowerColor 6870x2's installed and haven't had any problems. I'm using a Corsair HX1050 1050W power supply and don't have any stabililty issues when running FurMark.

Cons: The card requires crossfire support. This could cause issues if you are playing the latest PC games.

Other Thoughts: When switching crossfire modes it's easiest to uninstall the AMD driver, install the second card, and re-install the AMD driver. The correct crossfire mode will be selected automatically when the driver is installed. I didn't have an option to select CFx4 when I added the card without re-installing the driver.

1 out of 5 eggsDon't buy this card

Pros: Was a good card when it worked.

Cons: About six months ago I purchased a PowerColor 6870x2 from NewEgg, after about a week the computer started to shut off under load or restart, I decided to put my original video card back in but it was too late, the 6870 seems to have burned something up on the motherboard because after about two hours of having the original video card back in, the computer just shut off and turned on about five seconds later, I then heard a loud pop from the top of the motherboard, after that it just kept popping and the case filled with smoke, and there are now scorch marks on the inside of my case. I bought a new motherboard and everything worked good until I tried to put the 6870x in again, same thing. This time I thought it was the power supply, I replaced the motherboard and power supply this time. After about I week, I decided to try the 6870x2 one more time, bad idea.
My power supply is a 750 watt. This has cost me a ton of money, I am ready to throw the 6870 out of the window.

Manufacturer Response:

3 out of 5 eggsNot bad but......

Pros: It is fast for the price. Current 3d 11 is 8085 at stock.

Cons: It is not I repeat it is not 11.5 inches. Make sure you have room for 12 inches. Also it will not run with a fsb overclock on an intel system. I found the best way to install this card to be set your bios to stock clocks enter window uninstall current card shut down restart load drivers then after your stable redo your over clock using your multiplier. On my intel based system it would not even post without setting bios to stock clock settings.

Other Thoughts: First overclock on card netted 8500

4 out of 5 eggsNew card works

Pros: You can crossfire this card with another 6870 or another 6870x2 and have very high frame rates with little to no microstuttering as long as the game or application supports crossfire. The card runs relatively cool for the amount of power it draws and the amount of space it has. Under full load with the fan turned up to 80%, GPU1 is at 58 C and GPU2 is at 71 C. Not bad.

Cons: Depending on the game, sometimes it won't work as intended (aka no crossfire support for some games). When there is no crossfire support, it will only use the GPU power of one card, but that's not Powercolor's fault.

It's loud at full speed and somewhat loud at idle. What can you expect though? It's two 6870s on one board. I also received a broken card the first time I ordered it and received a working one when I RMA'd it. See my previous review to see what happened with the first one. It also does not overclock too high on stock voltage. I overclocked each GPU by 15 MHz and had some minor artifacting when running them at full load.

Other Thoughts: Great for bit coin mining!

Also: If you're having trouble running Skyrim with the newest drivers, it's because you have to select the bioshock profile in the Catalyst drivers. It will then work in crossfire mode.

2 out of 5 eggsDefective

Pros: Game graphics looked amazing with this card. Ran most games with maxed out settings not overclocked.

Cons: I purchased skyrim just after christmas and it quickly became one of my most played games. About 3 weeks ago, I started up the game only to find that when it loaded the screen would repeatedly flash and stutter which objects even flashing in and out of existence. About the same time, I noticed that when I move my mouse back and forth on a windows action message the entire message would steadily fade the more I moved the mouse until the message is a blur.

Other Thoughts: Tried re-installing windows (problem persisted which makes me think its a graphics card problem and not windows compatibility), updated BIOS and drivers. Interestingly, the problem mentioned above started when the new 12.1 drivers were released so I am not entirely sure if the driver or the card is to blame. Only have had this card for 7 months

Manufacturer Response:

So what happens if you revert back to an older driver version? It's not always a good idea to update your drivers, especially if your system is running fine. The purpose of driver updates is primarily to fix bugs. If you still need help with your card then please e-mail me at and I'll be more than happy to assist you, thanks.

1 out of 5 eggsDefective product

Pros: Able to be add another 6870 for tri-crossfire.

Beefy heatpipes.

Cons: The one that was shipped to me did not work. When I first attached this card, I kept getting random crashes in Windows 7 and BSODs. I tried to find out what the problem was, I thought it was drivers perhaps. However, the computer would exhibit the same symptoms in BIOS as well. I would be in BIOS and the screen would randomly turn black and the computer would become unresponsive. I've tried both PCI-E slots in the computer and it still crashes. I have tried other graphics cards and they work fine, it is only this card that has problems. I have also put this 6870x2 in other computers, and the same behavior happens (random crashes and black screens).

My power supply is adequate, it is a 1000 watt Coolermaster. I know that the power supply is plenty as I have powered two 6870s in crossfire before.

Other Thoughts: I am very disappointed in PowerColor. I have had good experiences with their cards in the past. I have submitted for a RMA with newegg, hopefully the replacement card will be a functioning sample.

Manufacturer Response:

I apologize for the negative experience and we appreciate your feedback. We have received generally positive reviews for this model so it's certainly unfortunate that your experience wasn't so pleasant. Please contact me directly if you have any questions or if you continue to have problems with the replacement you get back from us. My e-mail is, thanks.

1 out of 5 eggsPossibly incompatible or defective

Pros: This card for the price has unbelievable performance in most games. I did see some micro-stutter during Saints Row the Third, but overall performance in every other game seemed great.

Cons: After installing the card I personally had several issues arise. At times my computer would freeze booting into windows, freeze on bios splash screen, crash during games, and no video output or loss of output during use.

Other Thoughts: In theory this card is great, but for me I had nothing but problems getting my system to work properly and keeping it working when it did work. I attempted troubleshooting the issue by disconnecting devices, updating bios, reinstalled OS, and even changed out power supplys but nothing kept the issues from happening. I'm very happy with Newegg for taking care of it for me and giving me a refund to purchase a different card.

Manufacturer Response:

I apologize for the issues. We ran into a minor problem with a isolated batch of these cards and have worked tirelessly with Newegg to resolve the issue. If you're still having issues with your card then I encourage you to submit an RMA at (register an account, and then go to RMA Service under "Support") so that we can replace your defective card with a brand new AX6870. If you have any questions you can e-mail me directly at Thanks.

5 out of 5 eggsREAD "OTHER THOUGHTS"

Pros: Fast, reasonably quiet, all in one solution

Cons: Pulls more juice then two 6870's. These types of cards are getting really heavy and should have something to relive the stress on the MB slot. I jury rigged mine....

Not really a con, but the card is long 12" and wont fit in many mid tower cases without modification.

Other Thoughts: I'm a verified owner....

Most of the time this card is plug and play, no problem. But CF setups can be difficult to setup and it can be difficult to solve installation issues and those with little knowledge might find themselves challenged when dealing with problems.

PC did a great job packing 2 cards into this form factor. At $400 it's a pretty good bargin. Don't let the negitive reviews scare you away. It's no more complicated then any other CF setup.

Also, driver issues often associated with ATI/AMD have been non-exsistent.

I run (3) 23" screens and I've had zero issues. Eyefinity works great, with only a few games having issues (the issues were with the game not the card or drivers).
