5 out of 5 eggsTop enthusiast quality for people who know how to use it.

Pros: 1100 core clock 1425 memory @ 1.194 volts. Adjustable fans. Quite for air cooling. Very easy to remove for water cooling. Very good quality thick sturdy backplate. Awesome VRM and easy over locking abilities. Can reach 1250+ no problem

Cons: Not so much a con towards the gpu but towards lack of brand recognition and lack of people actually doing more research than just reading a few newegg reviews. No full cover water blocks available have to use universal water blocks for cooling.

Other Thoughts: I have 2 of these in crossfire cooled with XSPC Raystorm universal water blocks. Both running at 1250 core 1600 memory and temps never go over 45 celsius for either card. In the last 2 years I have had 5 different 7970's in a row. And these without a doubt are the best performing and best quality gpus out of them all. The few people you read of having issues are just less experienced or have less patient. These cards are definitely enthusiast cards and require proper attention if you plan on over locking them any more than they come. As for the other person that posted a review saying these cards do not work with asrock motherboards with uefi in march of 2013. He should have either checked his board better or asked someone who knows what they are doing to install them. I have used these cards on asrock, asus, gigabyteand now a msi motherboard. And with p67 ,z68 and ,z77 chipsets with zero compatibility issues. I would love to be able to get a sponsorship with Powercolor to build a nice performance machine and show everyone what you can do with Powercolor.

5 out of 5 eggsBest 7970

Pros: Doing weeks of research reading benchmark and watching review vid.
I know my stuff. Factory overlock,PCS-2, vortex 2, heat plate attach and can be removed. I know there be other reviews about dead cards. I put my card in woth Beta Drivers on my Win 7 Rig and had no problems. The Two free games I got within minutes,Thanks AMD. And this card is future proof. With the crossfire benchmark compete with Titan and 7970 cost less. Heat not an issue idle 39c full load 69c. All good and noise at 100% fan was not like my old 6970.

Cons: Only one con. Almost made me take away one egg is that the card almost one year old. And the 8970 is around the corner. But info from the Web say we will not see the 8970 end of the year or next. And I'm sure it will not come out with the two best games of the year. Also the crossfire potential is awesome.
Nuff said.

Other Thoughts: Cool box and I got it with bonus 30 dollar rebate. Two free games.
Free shipping.

5 out of 5 eggsGood Card!

Pros: Upgrading from the Powercolor 7870 GHz Edition to this monster you notice a big jump in performance in game. Runs almost all games, exception Crysis 3, completely maxed out at 60 frames. Once I get the money I WILL be buying another to run Crossfire in my rig. For the money this is the best 7970 you can buy! Comes with best clock speeds. I'm someone that is loyal with a company that makes good products and Powercolor has become my go to company to buy AMD graphic cards. If I wasn't a poor schmuck I'd have bought the Titan but then again never know when DX12 will release and make it a useless $1000 spent.

Cons: Not a Titan

Other Thoughts: Rig Specs:
Corsair HX1000 PSU
Corsair Carbide 500R

5 out of 5 eggsWorks Great in Crossfire

Pros: Super-fast in Crossfire; faster than my previous hd6970 crossfire set up; lower heat, higher clock speed, less noise, a little bit smaller, great framerates.

Cons: None...

Other Thoughts: I have two of these set up in crossfire; blows away my previous cross-fire set up. I have an ASRock Z77 Extreme 9 MoBo (i7-3770k) and didn't run into any issues that others have had. I may be one of the lucky ones that didn't get a defective card but from my experience so far this card doesn't deserve the low rating it's received - far better than the 3 egg average...

1 out of 5 eggsDoesn't work with ASRock Motherboards with UEFI Bios

Pros: I'm sure there are plenty if PowerColor actually tested the card with several mother board types.

Cons: Follw up review-
Got my RMA replacement and it did the same thing the last non-functioning card did. My Motherboard showed the same “62” error. This happened with my z68 mother board so I decided to purchase a z77 motherboard (both ASRock). The video card didn’t work with the z77 board as well.

It appears that PowerColor didn’t test this card with any mother board that has a UEFI Bios. This card will not work with any current ASRock motherboard and perhaps any other motherboard that has a UEFI BIOS. I cannot believe that PowerColor would release a card, out the public, knowing well that the card will not work with certain popular motherboard types. Either that or they didn’t test with those types of mother boards. Whatever the case may be I’ve never in my life had a more frustrating Video card Purchase than I’ve had with this video card.

If you don’t have a ASRock motherboard with a UEFI BIOS then this card should be OK. If you do? Then this card will probably not work.

Other Thoughts: I worked with someone from their support line. They were very helpful. The issue still didn't get resolved. PowerColor needs to come clean and admit that they released a video card that doesn't work with popular current motherboard types. What they need to do is buy a ASRock motherboard with a UEFI bios and test it. After than update the video cards Flash Memory, and offer fixes for folks who had problems, if they didn't already return it.

Manufacturer Response:

We do have several test systems with UEFI BIOS ranging from x58 up to z77 systems. We suggest that you try the card in another motherboard, not ASRock, and see if it works there. If it does, then it is likely a motherboard BIOS issue. Another possibility would be power related. Be sure that BOTH 8pin PCIe power connectors are attached to the card. If you do not have this properly attached - or if the PSU isn't working properly - you will encounter issues similar to what you've been experiencing.

5 out of 5 eggsBest 7970 for the $

Pros: 1100Mhz out of the box is incredible! This card comes with a non-reference PCB of Powercolor's own design that just screams high quality. I changed the thermal paste on mine to something a little more high quality and it dropped the temperature by 6 C. Now under full load it maxes out around 63 C. I play at 2560x1440 so it is pretty much at 100% all the time.

Cons: I wish this came with the old Power Jack that Powercolor used to sell because it does sag a little.

Other Thoughts: Powercolor is quickly becoming my favorite AMD GPU vendor. I had to RMA a 7950 a little while back and it was a painless process compared to other brands I've dealt with in the past.

5 out of 5 eggsBeauty!

Pros: Adjustable fans, solid build, and it overclocks some still. I bought two of these to run in Cross-Fire for use in my Intel i5-3570k build. They have been solid since day 1 when I got them 6 months ago. These cards give me some some solid FPS never dipping below 40 FPS with everything maxed out running 1920x1200 resolution on just about everything.

Cons: People who complain about theirs not working.

Other Thoughts: I bought mine from an online place that references a large South American jungle.

1 out of 5 eggsDOA Stay Away!!!

Pros: None

Cons: Fans spin but no picture. Almost 1/3 of the reviews here are about units that are Dead on Arrival. I read the reviews and took a chance anyway. I should have known better. My unit is also Nonoperational.

I have a Corsair GS800 power supply (no other external peripheral devices other than a keyboard and a mouse), hooked up both 8 pin power connectors. Reseated the card, tried it again, Still nothing.

Other Thoughts: If you read the reviews, and 1/3 of the reviews are people who received a unit that didn't work. Don't be a dummy like me and buy one anyway. Stay away from this unit. I want my money back, I don't even trust the manufacturer at this point to even send a working unit. How can they accept such a failure rate? I'm extremely disappointed and will never purchase a product from that brand again.

Manufacturer Response:

We do apologize for the issues you've experienced with our product. We stand behind all of our products and we want to make sure that this is resolved for you, Please contact us by phone at 626-330-4700 or by email at for further assistance.

1 out of 5 eggs7970 Vortex DOA

Pros: None

Cons: Card Arrived DOA. Based on some of the other reviews I should have stayed away from this card, i am truly disappointed with PowerColor READ these reviews and make a wiser choice than I have. And PowerColor, I have already sent your rep an email, so dont bother with one of you copy/pasted responses.

Manufacturer Response:

As far a "copy/pasted responses" go, those are really only for those who require lengthy troubleshooting which cannot really be done in a NewEgg response such as here.

Regarding the product issues you have been having with our product, I do apologize. We at PowerColor do stand behind all of our products and I will support you to the fullest extent possible to get any issues you are having resolved.

Anyways, when it comes to reviews and / or complaints, people who do not have any issue with their product - whatever product that is - will not complain or even write a positive review about their product. However, somebody who is having issues with their product will use any and all avenues available to them to complain about their product. One such avenue is of course these NewEgg customer reviews.

If you are still in possession of this card and would like further support, please feel free to contact me directly at

Thank you,

4 out of 5 eggsGreat card.

Pros: Beautiful card, can play pretty much anything I throw at it on max settings. Sits around 60-65 degrees after hours of playing games+streaming at the same time.

Cons: Bottom DVI slot did not work, had to get hdmi to dual screens. Could not overclock, even though it wasn't needed. Couldn't even get it up to 1150mhz.

Other Thoughts: As mentioned above, bottom DVI did not work, was pretty upset. I just went and bought an HDMI and am now dual screening with it. Another thing I noticed was one of the heat pipes was dented in, I wasn't to worried about it, hopefully this card lasts me a long time...
Oh another thing, as soon as I buy this card, I look back on the site and now it comes with free Crysis 3 and Bioshock game coupon. Why must this site troll me :(
