1 out of 5 eggsIf you paid $50, you paid too much!

Pros: Great for light web browsing and word processing. Perfect for those who like to play games at high or ultra settings for 5 minute spurts or at really low FPS. If you're looking for unusual and masochistic ways of getting gold from electronic components, then this is the perfect card for you!

Cons: This card can't play games like Skyrim, Battlefield 4, Mass Effect 2, etc. for 5-10 mins without either a temporary loss of picture followed by a drastic loss in FPS, or a complete crash with a black screen that requires a hard reboot. I've scoured the internet and forums looking for a fix for this problem and trying them, and none are forthcoming. All brands of the reference design have this problem, not just PowerColor, though, it is the brand I got. Just do a search for AMD R9 290 driver crash, or black screen crash and you'll find a well populated list of complaints that haven't been addressed, let alone alleviated. There appears to be no solution in sight. Just stay away from this card and the 290X (same problems). If you want a card that will give you the same performance as these, there are plenty of $50 to $100 cards out there that will do the job just fine.

Other Thoughts: AMD and PowerColor are about as helpful as a hole in the head with regard to remedying the problems with this card. RMA'ing a bad card won't help, as you will likely get another bad one in return. I've heard of others getting one that works, but it's not too often.

My Computer Specs:

CPU: Intel Xeon E3 1230 v3 (essentially an i7 Haswell without the iGPU)

MB: AsRock H87 Fatal1ty performance

RAM: Team Vulcan DDR3 1600 cas9 16 Gb

HD: 3 Adata Premier Pro SATA III SSD 128 Gb

CPU cooler: Noctua NH-U9B

6 Cougar Vortex HDB 120mm case fans

OS: Windows 8.1 64bit

And of course, the pièce de résistance, the GPU: PowerColor AMD Radeon R9 290 OC.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Card, Great Price (relatively speaking)

Pros: Fast
Comes with Battlefield 4
870K/hash on scrypt miners at stock clocks.

Cons: Has reference cooler which sounds like an aircraft engine at 50%+ speed

Other Thoughts: To the guy who says this runs hot, I don't know whats wrong with your cards but mine runs great.

I'm running mine for games and scrypt coin mining. At 100% GPU usage, with a 10% powertune (adding extra voltage) my card never exceeds 81 celsius. This is of course using MSI Afterburner to manage my fan speed. Runs at about 80% during scrypt mining, but never higher than 50% while gaming.

Get 180+ FPS in Borderlands 2 at max settings.
Get 60+ FPS in Assassins Creed 4 at max settings

My system

Core i5 3570k @ stock 3.4ghz
Regular non ssd hard drive

1 out of 5 eggsOverheating

Pros: Incredibly fast... for forty seconds (extreme throttling kicks in)

Cons: This card is hotter than most reviews show. It hits a full 95C and starts throttling in under 40 seconds. The worst part is that I can raise the fan speed to 100% and the card still hits 95C within a minute. It's definitely worse than the other R9 290s I have. Seems like Powercolor is having some "Quality Control" issues... this is the second one I have had to return in a month (first one started showing bad artifacts in Crysis 3 at factory speeds)

Other Thoughts: If you want to get an AMD R9 290, you may want to avoid this card. I am on my second RMA! In short, go for a different brand.

5 out of 5 eggsBest upgrade, since ever!

Pros: I upgraded from 2x5870's because Battlefield 4 wasn't happy with their 1GB of VRAM. ...But now that I have 4GB of VRAM the game runs smooth as ice (and obviously this card is ridiculously fast). The performance is mind blowing, I'm able to play BF4 at Ultra with 150% upscaling!

I'm using MSI AfterBurner to manage my GPU's fan speed, and when things get going, I have my ran set to run at ~3,400 RPM, which keeps my 290 below 75C, even after playing BF4 for 3hrs!

Cons: If you don't manage your fan speeds properly your temps could quickly escalate into the 90C+ range... And once you hit 105C, the GPU will shut itself down to prevent any damage.

The fan noise is a noticeable, but since my PC is ~6ft away, and I wear ear buds, I honestly can't hear anything when I'm gaming.

Other Thoughts: I've owned this card for 1 month, and it's the first time I've bought a GPU from PowerColor, and I have no regrets!

The ($399) MSRP is ridiculously resalable for a 290! ...It's a massive upgrade from my 2x5870's, and I'm glad I didn't wait for next years cards, because I've already owned this 290 for a whole month and I've had absolutely no issues with it.

The 290 is easily the #1 GPU to buy if you want the best price/performance ratio. PowerColor has built themselves a solid and reliable 290, and I totally recommend it!
