1 out of 5 eggs

Pros: It was inexpensive.

Cons: Driver installation was a real chore, which I knew was a bad sign right off the bat. Once I finally got the system to recognize the card and got the drivers installed, it made the system unstable.

Other Thoughts: This one had to go back for a refund. Stay away.

Manufacturer Response:

This is Raymond from PowerColor. We apologize for the issue that you are faced with. In the future, if you should encounter any issue, please email me at

5 out of 5 eggsGreat!

Pros: Arrived unbroken, functional and quiet with efficient cooling. Simple install, already had a HD7750, so I didn't even have to install drivers. Using with an old Core 2 Duo E7200 (2.53ghz) and I don't have a problem running anything so far, which makes me excited to upgrade motherboard and CPU ASAP!

Cons: There was no indication that my order would be shipped via Ontrac. Ontrac shipping details are not updated very timely, and when it was out for delivery, it said Washington, I'm in Southern Oregon. I asked the Ontrac delivery guy, and he confirmed there is a local Ontrac, they just ship down from WA via truck. It did get here a day earlier than anticipated.

Other Thoughts: I have a small case, with not-so-great ventilation, even in a 73° F room the card idles at 33/34° Celsius.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat Card if you're budget minded

Pros: This was part of a combination deal with a case, motherboard, cpu, psu, ram stick etc. for around $500. I kept the card and installed it into my wife's clunker computer and she is able to grind Skyrim on ultra settings. This thing looks nice and the fans keep it cool. You can dual it up with crossfire, although by itself it is strong enough for most games for high or better with decent fps.

Cons: It was too easy too install, and now my wife wants bigger monitor, keyboard, mouse and all the upgrades.

Other Thoughts: For my pc I went with the R9 280 3G card via MSI. If you go with that, it will run a little warmer so make sure you don't skimp on ventilation. But I did run this 270 on my pc to try it out and it does give great performance. Wife is pleased.

Pros: Good price, good power. A good upgrade from my 6850

Cons: First one arrived DOA. Had to take off an egg for that.

Other Thoughts: Make sure to update your BIOS before installing it

3 out of 5 eggsCoil Whines

Pros: - Cheap
- Efficient
- Runs relatively cool / quiet

Cons: - Coil whining after a few weeks of usage

Other Thoughts: Good card for the price. ($100 after MIR)

However, after a couple of weeks the card started to coil whine even when not in full usage.

RMA and returned.

Not a bad card for the price, but the coil whine isn't worth $100.

1 out of 5 eggsHow about including drivers on the driver disk?

Pros: It arrived.

Cons: PowerColor has incredibly weak driver availability and support. The "driver CD" included in the box comes with manuals for 10 different series of cards... none of them this card. (Included are series: 5500, 5600, 5700, 5850, 5970, 6850_6870, 6950_6870, 7700, 7800, 7900. The most recent of those manuals dates to 1/14/2009, the oldest to 9/8/2009. This card is an R9 270.)

The CHP_DET.EXE file on the disk is possibly the oldest, dating to 4/16/1998 -- that's right, a 16 year old executable that dates back to Windows Millenium Edition.

But hey no problem, right? Just go online and download the current driver. And in all fairness, PowerColor does have a downloadable list of drivers, including one for the R9 270X/270 series. The problem with this however is that the files apparently residing on a two year old Raspberry Pi connected to dial up. My network connection is great. It's four hours since I began downloading the 174 MB file, and I'm 43.9 MB of the way in.

PowerColor I'd have rather you didn't even include this "driver" CD, save the $4.99 it costs you to burn a few thousand of them and upload your drivers to a reliable third party site that can actually handle the traffic you are unwilling and/or unable to.

Also it'd be cool if you included, you know, drivers and manuals for the video card in question on the "driver CD" you ship with the video card, instead of years-old manuals and drivers. How cool would it have been to be able to install this card, put in the driver CD, then find a driver FOR THIS CARD ON THE DRIVER CD??? Wow that would be cool.

1 out of 5 eggsDOA

Pros: Good upgrade from my aging HD 6850. Good price.

Cons: Darn thing is DOA. Can't give it any more than 1 egg 'til I get a working one.
I'll come back and update when I get my RMA.

Other Thoughts: I was hoping to be able to write a 5 egg review, but... we'll see when I get the RMA.

3 out of 5 eggsdisappointed

Pros: ran good for a few months

Cons: so i bought this card for a new system i have built and it ran great for a while hence the 3 eggs. BUT i started getting black screen blips, started slow and became more frequent. and im told im not eligible to rma because its over 30 days old, so its a bit disappointing.

Other Thoughts: if i cant get it rma'd i more than likely witll switch brands.

1 out of 5 eggsIncompatible With Everything

Pros: None

Cons: Not reliably backwards compatible with PCIE 2.0.
Cheap-Feeling Fans and shroud
Very thing and cheap-feeling PCB
No technical support whatsoever

Other Thoughts: I bought this card to replace my aging Geforce GTX 560 TI on a Core i5 2700K computer with an Asus motherboard. When I tried hooking it up, I got nothing but a black screen. Hooking the card to my older Core 2 Duo with an Intel board produced video, but with considerable graphical glitches. I RMA'd the card with Newegg and the replacement card does the exact same thing. Apparently, the firmware or cheap hardware used in this cards construction has made its PCI-E 2.0 backward compatibility with even name-brand hardware non-existent. The motherboard manufactures' technical support lines were more than happy to try and help, although it was ultimately futile. PowerColor, however, couldn't even be bothered to answer my e-mail. Trying to find someone to live chat with was equally impossible. So, unless your motherboard (make AND model) is specifically listed as compatible with this SPECIFIC card, stay far, far away.
