2 out of 5 eggsBSODs

Pros: good performance,
lots of ports

Cons: gives me blue screens about once a week. It usually happens when the my screens transition out of sleep mode, but sometimes happens randomly if I'm watching a youtube video.

5 out of 5 eggsWow, get one now. Period.

Pros: Excellent performance/price. I was able to get a refurb unit for $229, and it performs flawlessly. GPU-Z indicates this has Samsung memory modules. Firestrike 1.1 1080p scores 8800, 9100 overclocked to 1122 core 1400 memory.
Perfect for any single screen/1080p user. In a Coolermaster Evo case, have only seen 69C after many hours of gaming, although it can get a little loud with the default fan profile. Headphones negate this issue! Very happy with purchase.

Cons: A little loud with default profile, but headphone users like me won't care.

Other Thoughts: For this kind of money for this amount of performance, what more could you want? No really, you live in La-La land if you think better deals are around. I won't buy another card until this one takes its last breath.

1 out of 5 eggsCard has a production BUG

Pros: Great when it works. GTA V maxed out easy.

Cons: Card comes with a bug that crashes it randomly. If you check the internet a lot of people have had the same problem. I got the updated bios from Power Color and it was completely unstable. This product should have been recalled from the market and all owner should get a upgrade to a newer updated version.

Other Thoughts: I don't know how a company as big as powercolor is still selling this thing. And how Newegg hasn't pulled it from the site.

5 out of 5 eggs6 mo. No problems.

Pros: This is my 2nd updated review from Nov 2014 - April 2015

I bought a 2nd card today 04/16/15 because I wanted a crossfire setup. I was fine with paying 250 compared to 200 during black Friday.

Price 8/10
Performance - 9/10
Reliability 10/10
Noise level 9/10
Value 10/10
Reviews 9/10

I spent a long time reading and studying and reviewing these r9 cards.

Check out techshowdown youtube review "Which R9 290 is the best?.." Oct 9, 2014

There is also a great forum thread on
"R9 290x and 290 owners official club"

I have to say at the beginning release of this card there were many complaints about the drivers crashing or not being compatible. As of Nov 2014 I have had ZERO issues with the card overheating, crashing, BSOD...etc.

This card has been used 8-12 hours straight while streaming to twitch without any coil whine, overheating, crashing or slowing down in BF4, Evolve, Heroes of the Storm etc. I am sure some of that was true at one time but not anymore.

Cons: none, Seriously!

No overheating, no crashing, no BSOD, nothing. This card is great.

Other Thoughts: This is a great great value.

I even overclocked it past the stock 1040mhz to 1120.
That's around a 18% boost off the standard(reference) card clock

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome!

Pros: Great Performance and stability. Great graphics. Stable, Overclockable.

Cons: Takes up almost 3 slots. Can't fit more than 2x in Crossfire without removing fan cooling and changing to liquid.

Other Thoughts: Pairing these together has been VERY rewarding!

2 out of 5 eggsStarted off well....

Pros: This is my 2nd 290, first was I got was a year ago and still no issues. It is quiet and easy to install and graphics are as expected.

Cons: I just purchcased this 2nd 1 in Jan. set up xfire and after 4 weeks stopped work so took it out and assumed it was my psu so I ordered a 1200w to make sure and still doesnt work. I am about to contact power cooler.

Other Thoughts: Would assume this far down the road that the original would stop working and not 1 after 4 weeks. Will prob switch to another brand with the next graphics card I purchase.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome. :)

Pros: Beast of a Graphics card! :) Very solid build and performance.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat performance for the price

Pros: Amazing performance for the price. Nvidia's equivalent is around $330 for only slightly better performance.

Runs pretty much every game at 60+ fps on Ultra at 1080.

Quiet after you set up your own fan curve.

Runs cooler than almost all 290 designs. Only the Tri-X competes with its temperature. With the default fan curve (a bit too loud for me), the max temperature I saw was 67 C. With my fan curve, it's much quieter and the max I've seen is 71 C. This is still 24 degrees under the max operating temperature of a 290 and 24 degrees cooler than a reference 290.

Factory overclocked at 1040 MHz. I got a stable overclock at 1120 MHZ without a voltage increase and up to 1190 MHz with the max voltage increase that Afterburner would allow. I didn't change the memory speeds at all. After all this, it performs almost as good as a reference 290.

Cons: Very long card at 12". I had the room for it in my case, but other might not.

Gets loud with default fan curve. You need to set up your own fan curve if you care about how much noise it puts out.

Other Thoughts: This 290 had the newer BIOS. I bought it in February 2015. I haven't had any black screen issues or crashing. Not a single problem with the card.

2 out of 5 eggsHaving Issues

Pros: 60FPS, 1080p

Worth the money for the performance

Cons: A tad loud

Frequent crashing - i have experienced several crashes while using this card. Twice while playing Skyrim on ultra settings, twice while playing an emulator, and it ALWAYS crashes after I wake the system from sleep. I am not sure why this is occuring, as I have installed all the necessary drivers and I have the necessary power supply.

Other Thoughts: My specs:

Processor: AMD FX 4100 3.6GHz

Power Supply: Corsair CX750

GPU: R9 290 Powercolor PCS+

Memory: 16GB DDR3 1600MHz

1 out of 5 eggsCrashy Crashy

Pros: Looks great in 1440p, when it works.

Cons: I bought this in November 2014. Straight swapped for my old 5850, which worked perfectly fine. Then the bluescreens began - at least once a day, sometimes 2 or 3 times, the PC would crash, with crash logs pointing to the video driver. This would happen in and out of games... I'd play maxed-out Skyrim for hours, and then it would bluescreen while on Facebook.

I wiped the hard drive and installed a fresh copy of Win 7, and the problem kept reoccuring. I contacted Raymond at tech support, sent bluescreen logs, and he blamed my 650W Seasonic Gold PSU, even though more often than not the crashes happened with zero load on the video card. Sorry dude, I'm not spending $150 on a PSU and completely gutting my PC when it's not the problem.

I couldn't even return it because I'd already redeemed the bundled games so I would have lost $100+.

The 14.12 driver update actually completely fixed the bluescreen problem - i have not had one since. They were replaced by blackscreen driver crashes several times a day. Most are recoverable, so I guess it's an improvement? Again, this points away from the PSU and towards shoddy drivers or defective hardware.

Other Thoughts: Got this on sale and really wishing I hadn't... stuck with a lemon.

System specs, with rough estimates of power consumption - you tell me if this is too much for this PSU:

i7-860 (currently stock speed) - 180W (number taken from an overclocked i7-870 review)
16gb RAM - ~10W peak
Asus P7P55D-E motherboard - let's be conservative and call it 80W
This card - 300W peak
128GB Samsung 830 SSD - ~2W
2x1TB HDDs - ~20W
5 12cm fans - ~30W peak
6 USB devices - ~15W peak
Seasonic X650 Gold
Win 7 Ultimate x64

So that's 637W total... assuming every component is COMPLETELY 100% maxed out at the same time, and the CPU is heavily overclocked. Let me note again that this thing crashes with nothing running but one browser window.
