2 out of 5 eggsdestroys games if cooled well

Pros: 1100mhz core / stock voltage / +50 power limit
1450mhz ram
Nice backplate
All ddr5 chips have heat spreaders
Bought the card at 299 openbox!!
No black screens
No flashing
Destroys games
Single card is 30-40% faster than 2 560ti' in sli
I still have a 560ti for physx

Cons: VRM heat sinks are nice, but mounted very light on the chips themselves (they were both angled) and would flop around if i bounced the card in my hand.

Max temp out of the box climbed to 95°C furmark and fans at 100% while throttling hard.

Main heatsink had solder? On the copper raised gpu contact part, in turn causing an improper seat. After sanding, lapping it is flat now.

The main heatsink has a mechanical limitation on how close it can get to the gpu die. Wiggle wiggle everywhere. Some nylon washers fixed that.

Fans that are supplied with the unit are underpowered and temps would still climb into the 93+°C range at the OC speed mentioned in the pros. One silverstone php-141 140mm x 38mm 170+CFM fan and it never goes above 75°C

Other Thoughts: Sould the card have of worked as soon as I put it in my computer? Yes, of course I would like my video card to work without the above steps mentioned in the cons.

Im getting a nepton 140xl aio tomorrow to put on this heat machine

For 299.99 okay............. for 378.99 no way man. PowerColor's other card has had great reviews :-)

1 out of 5 eggsFailed 3 Weeks After Install

Pros: Good design, cooling, performance numbers. Price was good. The rebate was promptly processed and returned in record time...GOOD JOB PowerColor!!! That's exceptional these days!

Cons: What can I say, it failed after three weeks...
I've been burned by delaying my Rebate submissions on other purchases due to the hassle so I jumped right on this. Unfortunately (and understandably), once you submit the rebate (with packaging bar code) you can't return to Newegg, otherwise I would have RMA'd it for a replacement or alternative graphics card as I was well within the 30 day Newegg Standard Return Policy.

Other Thoughts: I really want to like PowerColor. They seem to be driven to capture the low cost / high value consumer (I think that's all of us). Saw the previous bad reviews but thought I would be the exception. Highly skilled Corporate IS professional. Took great care to install and properly configure the card and drivers...still, board failed after three weeks. Just RMA'd the board to PowerColor. I'm hoping for an exceptional experience to wash away the bad taste I now have for the brand. I will post an update with my experience.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello,

This is Raymond from PowerColor. We apologize for the issue that you faced with the card. Please email me if you have any issue with the RMA. Raymond.Hsu@powercolor.com.

Raymond

5 out of 5 eggsKudos to PowerColor

Pros: I had bad experience with first card I bought and needed to complete an RMA with PowerColor. The RMA went very smooth and suprisingly fast. In total it took about 10 days round trip to get a good card. Thanks Raymond! Oh and I got my rebate check in 31 days. Kudos to PowerColor!

SO, I decided to buy another one of these PowerColor R9 290's. It works great. Overall, very happy with PowerColor.

Cons: -R9 290's in crossfire do run hot but, that was expected
-These card need a quality power supply, 750 W or above

Manufacturer Response:

Hello,

This is Raymond from PowerColor. We are glad that the card is now working for you. If you should need anything else, please email me at Raymond.Hsu@powercolor.com.

Best Regards,
Raymond

1 out of 5 eggsDud :(

Pros: -GTX 780 and sometimes even GTX 780Ti levels of performance. All of this for a substantially lower price point than the aforementioned cards

Cons: - Having the exact same problem as the other reviewers
-This card would constantly crash to black or white screen while gaming; hard-locking my system
- Hot and noisy for the brief periods that I was able to play games
- Currently, in the RMA Process with Powercolor. hopefully that will go smoothly

Other Thoughts: Took a chance with Powercolor despite the bad reviews on this specific card. If I end up with a quality working R9 290 from them I will be happy but, right now I'm really regretting my purchase

Manufacturer Response:

Hello,

This is Raymond from PowerColor. We apologize for the issue that you faced with the card. Let me know if the second RMA does not work for you. We can find a solution to your problem.

Best Regards,
Raymond

5 out of 5 eggsexcellent

Pros: Runs cooler than reference card and quieter than reference card. Runs all of my games great in eyefintiy and all the eye candy.

Cons: Can still get noisy at 87% fan speed (which it does reach). With the fan design it can heat up your case, since the cards main exhausting is within the case.

Other Thoughts: I bought 2 PowerColor reference 290s for my setup and they worked well for about 2 months and then I started getting the dreaded black screen crashes. I tried all the fixes on the web and finally ended up RMAing the cards. PowerColor was very Fast and professional about my issues. I had replacement cards in 12 days in my hands, start to finish. They had discontinued the original reference cards and offered me these cards as replacements. I am very happy with these and would recommend them to anyone looking for a highend card.

My Specs:
Antec 1200 Modded
I7 950 @4.20ghz on H2O single custom loop
12 Gb DDR3 1600
2x PowerColor 290s Xfire
240GB Mushkin Chonos SSD
3x 150GB WD Raptors RAID0
ABS Majesty 1100W PSU 83amps Single 12v Rail
3x 24" Asus LEDs
Logitech G930, G510 and G500
Steel series HD9 Game pad
Nostromo N52te

1 out of 5 eggsDefective

Pros: The card was quiet and the games ran smoothly in between crashes.

Cons: The card kept crashing on me within 5 minutes of gaming. The application would either close with an error regarding a driver crash or I would receive a black screen and would have to do a hard reset.

Even after doing a fresh install of Windows 8.1 Pro, the problem was persistent.

Other Thoughts: I contacted Newegg for a full refund and placed an order the the PowerColor PCS+ R9 290. I just received it and it seems to be doing well.

Prior to seeing the reviews on this card, I had contacted customer support. He just sent me a few common troubleshooting tips for the wrong model. But seeing as i'm using their PCS+ R9 290 without any issues...it must have been the TurboDuo R9 290 itself.

For the email regarding troubleshooting; even after filling out their preliminary questions, I received an email with my name misspelled and troubleshooting for the wrong GPU model.

He did apologize afterwards and the responses were fairly quick.

I had a PowerColor 7870 EZ Edition and when I needed to troubleshoot for that card, the tech team was on point.

I have no particular issues with PowerColor. It's just unfortunate that the TurbroDuo was defective...but hey! at least I got the better PCS+ R9 290 for the same price!

Manufacturer Response:

Hello,

We apologize for the experience you faced. We will do our best to investigate the issue. Please email us at USA@powercolor.com.

Best Regards,
PowerColor

1 out of 5 eggsDriver crashes

Pros: Temp does not exceed 75*C for normal gaming. Benchmarks at 90*C in torture tests.

Cons: Between 5-30 minutes, the video driver will crash. The screen blacks out and once it is restored, you will need to restart your machine to restore the performance (120fps -> 14fps after crash). Tried multiple drivers (official, beta, etc) with the same issue. System is not overclocked and card is also running at stock factory OC (which is probably the issue here). Driver crashes at 70*C so it is not a temperature issue. I'm using a Corsair 850W power supply as well. Switch to my older 7950 with no issue.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello,

This is Raymond from PowerColor, we apologize for the issue that you are facing with the card. Please email me at Raymond.Hsu@powercolor.com and we can troubleshoot the card together.

Best Regards,
Raymond

1 out of 5 eggsDefective

Pros: None

Cons: Defective
Loud

Other Thoughts: My video card was defective. 10+ hard freezes in the first day of use. I have tried multiple drivers and games, the problem still persists. With-in 30 minutes of use, my system will hard crash. I have more than adequate cooling within my case..

RMA'd
