5 out of 5 eggsA good bargain for a great GPU

Pros: Operates as well as my GTX470 and is almost as good as an R9-270 GPU. I'm using this HD6970 with an AMD FX8350 CPU in an Asus M5A99FX Pro - R2.0 mobo and I'm playing my games through Origin and Steam on high settings using a Westinghouse 32 inch 1080P TV as my monitor, color calibrated using the Colorvision Spyder 2 system. I'm getting gameplay that is spectacular for me!

Cons: Given the price I paid, NONE,

Other Thoughts: If I put my ear right on the PC case then I can hear this video card on PC startup. Normally after boot is completed the other four fans in the box (intake, exhaust, CPU and PS) submerge the sound from the two fans on the video card. The PC is silent to my ears when using my PC as it is about three feet away under my desk. During game play there is, on occasion, increased fan noise and this is probably from the video card. This video card runs around 45 to 50 degrees C normally but has reached 85 (seldom) during intense game-play. For gamers plying only on 1920 by 1080 screens this card is OK. I don't believe one needs a current design card in the plus $200 range as is recommended by most gaming websites. By the way the bios date on this card is 3/19/14 and I find this unusual as the GPU was released back in December 2010 and I thought the HD6970 was not being currently manufactured.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks well

Pros: GOt it fast. Thanks Newegg. Had an old Asus 4850 board that went bad and an old pci-e 1.0 interface. This board has way more headroom than my combo can push for graphics so its keeping me going for a few more years til I can upgrade. Very happy with my purchase.

Cons: Its large. My case had the room but check the dimensions of your case. Also uses a lot of power and requires two pci-e plugs for the single card.

5 out of 5 eggsgood card for the money

Pros: So far this card works for every game i have thrown at it for the womans pc. it's huge though..gunna force me to upgrade the rest of her setup lol.

Cons: It's a really big card. the micro board i put it in has the sata connectors...right under this card. made it work but gunna be upgrading the board/proc soon to re arrange it lol

Other Thoughts: i like it..good price. now the only thing holding the gf's pc back is the processor itself

4 out of 5 eggsRead This! Important!!

Pros: Excellent for budget build. Can't beat the price, period. Excellent performance! This card has ran all of my games on ultra high settings. It ran the new Tomb Raider game at "ultimate" settings at 49.7 frames a second and looked jaw dropping on my brothers HD monitor. These are good cards, you just need to know what your buying and what to watch out for. I would give it 5/5 eggs if it was not for the cons...

Cons: This card will block your SATA ports if they are located under the PCI - E slot! You can buy "elbowed" connectors to fix that. This card is HUGE, right at a foot long! Fans are as loud as a harrier jet when set to cool properly. Catalyst control center does not control fans correctly (to lazy in my opinion) Easy to fix if you manually adjust them up and down yourself or use speed fan or afterburner. IMPORTANT!!! For anyone who uses their rig a lot for gaming, or mining you NEED to re-paste it. This is like the 15th-ish budget card I have seen that has horrible TIM compound applied to it. I think mine actually had to much, I noticed "White powder" building up under the card due to the compound being slapped on haphazardly and being cheap to begin with, so it started to "Flake" off after being heated. This could be what one customer described as "ashes on his motherboard" in his review of this card. I have seen this before with Galaxy, EVGA and a few others. They make a excellent product, but then they slap horrible TIM compound on it?! Lazy!! If you plan on keeping it and you don't want your PC case to suffer from meltdown. I suggest removing the heat-sync and applying something better, like IC diamond is perfect for a gpu. I would not suggest AS 5 for a GPU although I have heard it works. Please know what your buying before you buy it!!! This card has the "Reference" coolers on it so that don't help either. They are cheap, plain and simple. Do not block the fans by installing another card right over this one, I noticed a 10 degree jump once I tried this. So I had to remove my sound card and go with on-board. :( I'm using a test bench too so temps should be a little cooler. Just keep it around 41c-48c during windows and browsing. I don't care what ANYONE says 80c should be the MAX for this chip. When it hits anything higher then 90c it starts the degradation process. With that all being said. I have mine running right now to write this review and i have windows media player running a AVI file and a browser window open. Current temp is now 46c but that is with the fans at 70% (very loud and annoying) if I move my fans just up to 75% I can play Max Payne 3 and Saints Row 4 without going over 65c I will report my temps after applying the IC diamond today!

Other Thoughts: Don't take this review the wrong way, this card is great for the amount of money you invest. You always get what you pay for so 99.99 for this card and 12.99 for some better thermal paste is a EXCELLENT deal. If you have the space in your case to upgrade, this is a great option. If you have a smaller "micro" board and your SATA cables are right below the PCI-E card, you may need to invest in some SATA cables that are bent or "elbowed" so they will fit under the card without issues. You never know you may actually get lucky and get a card that has had the thermal compound applied to it correctly!

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: I'm not a big gamer, you need to look somewhere else for performance. It works for me.

Cons: Not a big thing, but I had trouble fitting it into the case. Nearly had to return it before I found a panel that removed so it could fit. Panel then went back on--it truly wasn't an issue, not even cosmetic appearance on the case.

Other Thoughts: Came with a display port to HDMI adapter.

4 out of 5 eggsCan't beat the price!

Pros: This card has ran every game that I have thrown at it on ultra settings. The Card runs about 45c just doing regular tasks in windows. Games send it into about 65c or so. This is a very acceptable temp for a GPU. I have been PC gaming for years and I don't understand all the reviews with people stating it runs hot! These temps are within spec of this card. I am running this on a Corsair VX-450 W PSU and it runs just fine, so if you have a PSU that is a good brand with good solid caps in it you can get away with 450 to 500 watts. However my PSU is corsair and they are known for making power supplys that preform better then they are spec'ed for! The auto throttle for the fans on this card works great!

Cons: The card is VERY VERY large, about a foot long. If you own a smaller motherboard that has the SATA connectors lined up below the PCI-E slot then you will need to buy SATA cables that are bent or "Elbowed" at the connector because this card is so large it will block them off. This card feels very flimsy compared to other graphics cards I have handled so be very careful during installation. If you only have on 6 pin PCI-E connector on your PSU you will need to order a converter!

Other Thoughts: Best card for the price. It will over clock from 880 to 950 with ease using ATI's catalyst control center. Remember folks 65c to 70c at full load running a newer game is totally normal for a Single GPU!

5 out of 5 eggsGreat card

Pros: This is my second 6970. Works as advertised. Got mine OCed to 950 on the core and 1400 on the mem. Running in crossfire with my 3 year old sapphire 6970 and everything works great.

Cons: Even though it's an aftermarket dual fan cooler it can still be noisy over 50% fan speeds. It's not as loud as a stock cooler though and it's not enough to take off an egg. The cooling is pretty good though and the card doesn't get very hot.

Other Thoughts: One thing I didn't notice about this card until I got it is the mem speed. The stock mem speed on pretty much all 6970's is 1375mhz but this one is 1250mhz. I only noticed when trying to oc this card even with my other 6970. Both cores are at 950mhz but this cards mem won't go past 1400mhz while my sapphire card is at 1450mhz. It's not really a con because it says on the specs here on newegg 1250mhz, I just didn't notice. It also doesn't make a huge difference in performance. My 2 sapphire 6970's before one died a few years ago would score 10500 in 3dmark 11, these two score 10300 so it's pretty close, nearly in the margin of error. Not really sure why the mem is clocked slower on this card, maybe it's a lower performance mem than what was initially used in the 6970's when they were brand new. Alone this card scores 6300 in 3dmark 11. Either way for 99$ this is still the best bang for buck card out there and outperforms any card on the market at the 99$ price point.

3 out of 5 eggsGood performance for the price

Pros: Performance is comparable to my R9 270X. Good heatsink with copper heatpipes. Good performance and low price compared to newer AMD cards.

Cons: I first installed this in a Windows PC. I kept getting driver crashes (black screen) playing Alien: Isolation or 3DMark. My solution was to set power limit to -20% and 730 Mhz for it to be playable.

Other Thoughts: Both my R9 270x and 6970 have driver crashes playing games in Windows. Is it just me or does AMD make buggy drivers? I am currently using it in Debian Linux to play Dota 2 without any driver crashes.
