Cheap Card
- Pros: Cheap price, runs games and programs fairly well. Can play Far Cry 2.
- Cons: Noisy as hell, fan or something makes a strange noise whenever i load a program using graphics, doesnt work much better than my x800xt thats 4 years old.
Cannot run properly
- Pros: Prompt shipment, arrived very fast. Easy to install.
- Cons: When not running video intensive games or appliactions, this card seems to work fine. But when playing World of Warcraft (which isn't even that graphic intensive of a game!) it would constantly freeze or lock up the whole computer system and require me to do a hard-reboot or shutdown. I have the latest drivers and my computer components (motherboard, power supply) are all pretty new and powerful enough as well, so I doubt other system parts are causing conflicts. I even tried using the lowest video settings and the freezing/locking up would still happen.
Called up BFG Tech and they suggested that I try running 3D Mark to test the card. Voila, the card would not even start up on the first test! My screen would go dark and then get a windows critical error and reboot itself. Even my on-board video card can the 3D Mark tests, despite low mark values!
- Other Thoughts: Not sure if I got the bad apple of the batch of the 8600 GTS line of cards, but I'm going to cross my fingers and give Newegg another try and get their 9800 GTX+ version even though it costs significantly much more. Their outstanding customer service on the phone today in accepting my RMA request is the reason why I'm giving it a 2nd star.
good for PhysX as long as nVidia supports it
- Pros: The price was certainly very appealing, more so than many slower nVidia cards, and it's capable enough to act as a stand-alone physX card while my 8800 GT does the graphics. It's also very quiet, too. Cool thing about using a viddy card stand alone physX card, you don't need an SLI motherboard to run it. My motherboard has an Intel P35 chipset.
- Cons: It has nothing to do with the card itself, but nVidia is the problem. Their lastest forceware 180.48 drivers won't recognize this card at all. Had to revert to 178.24s.
- Other Thoughts: Newer beta drivers show support for the 8600 series cards, but I'm waiting to see a true WHQL 180 series driver that supports it. I'm running on an Intel Q6800, A-bit IP35 Pro, 4 GB OCZ PC2-8500 Reaper, 8800 GT primary graphics, SB X-Fi Xtreme Music, Tt 700 Watt PSU, and Windows XP Pro 64-bit.
I opted for the standard 3-day shipping. I actually got it in two days. Kudos to newegg for such a fast response.
