Pros: None. The ADVC300 is old technology.
Cons: In my research I found the Canopus ADVC55 coupled with AV Tool’s AVT-8710 TBC (Time Base Corrector) to be a superior alternative to the ADVC300. The combo set me back $380.00 but from what I read it did a superb job. What sold me on the combo was:
1. The Canopus ADVC55’s good track record, the IEEE 1394 interface (USB just doesn’t cut it for video transfer), its use of native drivers (no proprietary software or drivers required) and the ease of use; you just plug it in with its default settings and it works.
2. The AVT-8710’s good track record, no software or drivers required and its ease of use; you just plug it in with its default settings and it works.
I've converted multiple VHS tapes with this combo without any problems -- it's been plug and play.
Other Thoughts: If you don’t have the need to transfer your edited video back to VHS, S-VHS or Hi8 then the combo may be the answer you’re looking for. There have been more than a few occasions where I’ve experience an audio/video out of sync condition; the ATV-8710 fixes that. The combo connects as follows: VCR -> AVT-8710 -> ADVC55 -> PC. The AVT-8710 only has video input/output which is fine as it’s only the video you pass through it. Before you run out and purchase the combo, please do your own research to ensure it meets your requirements. The best price I was able to find the AVT-8710 was at B&H Photo as Newegg doesn’t sell it.

Word of caution

Pros: Known to be a great product and has a very good track record.
Cons: Only supported Windows OS is XP and Win2K.
Other Thoughts: I was hesitant to purchase this product since the supported OS seems to have stopped at XP and Win2K. I emailed Canopus and asked them when their product would be certified for Windows 7. The reply I got back was: “It has not been certified with Windows 7 yet. So far, reports are the hardware works fine but some users have had difficulty with Picture controller.” If you’re running Vista or Win7, the question you need to ask is: “Do I really want to spend over $400.00 on a product that has not been certified since XP or Win2K? If it doesn’t work as advertised you have a very good chance of being on your own. Also keep in mind that if you’re running XP or Win2K, product life may be short as disinterest in certifying a product usually means it’s going to be discontinued or replaced with a newer/different product down the road. I would either wait for a fire sale or certification before purchasing this product.

Pros: This little box sets the standard in video conversion. I transferred about 30 old tapes. No hiccups. Audio & Video never ever out of sync. Transfer one old tape to DVD & it speaks for itself.
Cons: None.
Other Thoughts: I use a professional grade VCR along with it.
