XFX 9800GT
- Pros: This is a really awesome card. The fan is actually pretty quiet, I've got 3 120mm fans in my case (antec 300) and I can just barely hear the gpu fan over them (they run about 26dba) My card runs very cool for a single slot as I'm writing this review it is sitting at 39c. I tested it out on batman arkham asylum and Overlord II both with Nvidia Physx on and full resolution the hottest I saw it get was 65c so very reasonable.
the card is very powerful and can handle every game I've thrown at it just fine so far. Also I believe as one reviewer put it as this is the "green edition" it doesn't have a 6 pin PCI E connector. This might be a con if you're trying to SLI with an older 9800 or 8800. I am just using it on my spare computer I use for light gaming and art, it works flawlessly and with the low heat it isn't a big deal that it vents into the case unlike a dual slot.
- Cons: Well, you can actually hear the fan. I don't think it is a very big deal. it's not really irritating like most small fans, just this kind of soft quiet "shhh" sound.
the box these ship in display some wrong information and claim they want a 550W power supply or better. I believe XFX just is using somewhat older packaging for the newer card. I don't think it's really anything to worry about. you probably just want like a 450W or better to run it.
Also don't let newegg's photo of the box and everything fool you, it still has the older card on there with the PCI E connector. most likely you will be getting the newer version that doesn't have the connector.
- Other Thoughts: XFX is a really great brand as well as Newegg is a great place to buy. I actually received this 9800GT as a RMA from XFX when my old 8800GT quit after 1.5years of hard use. make sure you register within the 30 days and you will get their warranty with their excellent support. honestly XFX support is some of the best in the business. I highly recommend them as a company.
Great card for low power gaming
- Pros: Out the door I slapped a FV 900-Cu on this puppy ( had to mod my Shuttle to fit that on there ).
The stock HSF on my card did have a single copper heatpipe connected to the copper pad for the GPU so this is not a poor aluminum heatsink like I was expecting which is nice. If also seems XFX has gotten more reasonable with thermal paste and did not globbe it on like other companies do.
The card is 1/4" shorter than the 9600GT it replaced which is quite nice as from the pic's I assumed it was the same length as a reference 9800GT.
With my VF 900-Cu I was able to OC the card to 715mhz on the GPU and a whopping 2080mhz on the ram which for a card considered to be "green" was completely unexpected as the GPU on these is undervolted .1v less than a normal B1 revision of this GPU which should limit maximum clocks but obviously not by much.
With the card at stock speeds I play RE5 @ 1440x900 on max detail in DX10 mode minus AA and average 30 - 40 FPS. CoD4 maxes out @ 1440x900 with
- Cons: Mine did not OC to 830mhz on the GPU and 2600mhz on the ram like my old 9800GTX + did :'(
- Other Thoughts: Fact about this GPU. These 9800GT's have a board power of 66w which is 9w under the 75w the Pci-E slot can output. This specific 9800GT EE is roughly 1/4" shorter than a reference 9800GT.
My system is a Shuttle SN25P running Vista 32-bit with a 4200+ x2 , 2gb PC3200 2-2-2-5 1T and with this 9800GT @ stock and I can play CoD4, TF2 and HL2 DM all at 1440x900 with max details and 4x AA. I play RE5 @ 1440x900 on max detail in DX10 with no AA
- Pros: Runs well, stays cool.
- Cons: The directions to install this card were for a different model. This card doesn't require any extra power hook up, and I spent a good 15 minutes running in circles trying to figure out what was wrong.
